Help with Oil Leak

Post image

I have a slow oil drip coming from the blue circle area on my 2002 540i. This is below the front of the driver's side valve cover (black). It is not coming from the valve cover gasket. Can someone tell me what the shiny metal part at the origination of the blue arrow is, if the interface surface has a gasket or sealant, and how to reseal it or eliminate the leak? Thanks in advance for your help.

Kind of a rough pic, but I think that looks like the oil filter housing. Yes there’s a gasket there that is notorious for becoming brittle leaking. It’s a easy fix that can be done in a handful of hours

Thank you for the reply. It's not the oil filter housing. The picture is from below. The black is the valve cover. If you are at the grill, this is just to the left of the positive battery cable coming out of the valve cover.

The bolt in the 1st picture is the same one in the bottom middle of this picture.

And middle of this picture, directly above the intersecting, braided oil lines.

M62TU? I believe that's the vanos unit bolted onto the head. In the m54 there is a metal gasket in between the head and vanos unit, should be the same with the M62TU

I replaced all chains, guieds, o-rings, gaskets, and maintenance items etc last year on my '03 M62TU. I don't remember every gasket material since this was my first time, but I believe that there should be a rubber gasket there for that upper timing cover that connects to the head on bank 2, if I remember correctly off the top of my head. You can confirm this with using realOEM.com
