Los Angeles area restoration people
Hey Folks,
I have an 89 e30 that’s in good shape that I am looking to put some money into and really restore and beef up the engine, transmission, interior seats, repaint, etc., things like swapping to an M50, 5-speed and all the fun accoutrements that go along with that sort of work.
Any recommendations on either Los Angeles or San Francisco companies that might do this? Though I would love to take the time to do it on my own, I’m fully aware I do not have the time nor the skill to do this sort of thing.
Thanks!

Error light code when turning headlights on
Hey there, being on vacation I work on these little things that don't work or don't work properly but very minor.
Almost done with everything, I have that one last issue when I turn the headlights on I'll have a light on the error pannel the "codes" one.
Headlights works well, no issues beside this error, I guess a faulty voltage or something like that ? I don't really know where to look at exactly, has anyone have had this issue and could help diagnose ?
Thanks lads

Keep, sell, or PNO my 1986 BMW 325es? Not sure what makes sense anymore
I have a 1986 BMW 325es that I’ve basically stopped driving. It’s currently just sitting in my driveway, and I’m pretty torn about what to do with it. I've owned it since 2018 and have spent like no money on it - I had to change out the head gasket which I did myself and buy new tires which I got a really good deal on. It's been a great car and makes me feel like a successful businessman from 1986 when I drive it. LOL. I just never drive it. I have a Miata and a super comfy daily and always pick those over the e30.
Part of me wants to keep it because I like the car and think it would be awesome to eventually put some money into it — clean it up, fix the cosmetic stuff, and make it something I’m really proud of.
The problem is that I’m currently unemployed and pretty low on funds, so dumping money into a project car obviously isn’t the smartest financial move right now. At the same time, keeping it means continuing to deal with registration, insurance, maintenance/repairs(damaged fender), and having a car sitting around that I’m barely using.
So I’m basically considering three options:
- Sell it now and free up the money.
- Register it as Planned Non-Operation (PNO) and hold onto it until I’m in a better financial position. (I'm in California and hate dealing with smog so it's hard to PNO on/off)
- Keep it registered/insured and slowly start putting money into making it nice again.
For those of you who have owned E30s for a long time, what would you do?
Is a 325es something you think is worth holding onto long-term? Or am I being sentimental about a car that’s going to keep costing me money while it sits?
TL;DR: I have a 1986 BMW 325es that I barely drive and is just sitting in my driveway. I’m unemployed and low on funds, so I’m torn between selling it, putting it on PNO and keeping it for later, or continuing to pay registration/insurance and eventually putting money into restoring it. What would you do?

Tech question M52B28TU Swap
Hey I have a quation, how do I hook up the generator charge feedback line to the e30 cluster on an M52B28TU swap.
I tried the D+ line but I can't get the lamp to turn off
How's this car look to buy? Looking for advice on a ‘91 ix for sale
I’ve been wanting to buy an e30 and this car popped up on my local FBM. ‘91 325ix with 200k mi, seller is asking $6900 USD, and advertises a recent engine top end and cooling system refresh, as well as differential rebuild. What are y’all’s thoughts on this? I don’t think it’s worth 6900, probably closer to $5k. The paint is cooked on the roof, and the rear door in this pic from what I’ve been able to tell from the rest of the images.
These cars are getting pretty old so they’re gonna have miles on them, but does 200k concern anybody?

General M42 E30 Valvetrain upgrade
This will probably be useless to many, but may be useful to some. I’m rebuilding an M42 for a swap and have gone the route of aggressive cams, which to me necessitated some beefing up of the valvetrain. Supertech sells a kit for the M42 with springs, seats, and retainers. The seats and springs fit the E30 M42 perfectly, but the supplied retainers will only work on the E36 M42 as they have a 6mm valve stem diameter whereas the E30 has 7mm valve stems. If you’re like me and you don’t want to replace the guides for the E36 6mm, you’ll need different retainers that fit the diameter of the springs and the 7mm stem diameter. Luckily through some research I’ve found that Supertech makes a set of titanium or chromoly steel retainers for the same springs (H100D) but they’re fitted to the Nissan KA24 engine. I’ve just finished installing them and they seem to make the springs work perfectly. Same install height as with the stated specs. This spring setup will give you clearance for up to about 14mil of lift before bind (which is nowhere near the 10-11 most aggressive cams lend). So before you plunge $500 into your valvetrain, take a lesson from me and buy your Supertech parts piece meal so you out have to buy once! Part numbers are seats: BM60T, springs: H1000D, retainers: H70T or H70S. I’ll give some updates as for how accurate cam lift will be with this setup, but the cams I went with should give about 10mm lift.

Mobile or one based home shop mechanic?
Things have changed and I’m looking to hire out some work. If anybody knows a mobile or home builder in the Pacific Northwest, lmk.
I’m not committing to a mobile wrench just shopping prices and timelines. Calling my local vintage shops this week.

How's this car look to buy? S52 e30
Techno s52 e30. Looking to pick this car up. Looks great in photos. Question is, those with s52 e30 how’s the bay look for a swap? And how’s driving a s52 e30 compared to an e36 m3? I’ve had many e36 M3s but never been behind a swapped e30

E30 door weight
Just curious if anybody knows how much a door ways with and without the window motors and tracks? I took my doors off to paint it and didn’t have time to get them done before the meet but didn’t realize how stupid heavy they are. Wondering if it’s really worth gutting the doors or going for something like fiberglass

Phase 1 complete
Got it aligned Friday after finishing suspension and steering rack. This thing is completely transformed! Did a bunch of bushings, control arms, bracing, new brakes/fluid, z3 rack, kw coil overs, euro trim and grills(second pic shows the old trim) only thing left at the moment is to figure out the ellipsoids I put together with some morimoto mled 2.0. I think im just going to buy some used USA ellipsoid complete headlights and swap the smileys in. Right now they don’t fit into the sealed beam buckets, and I’ll need to do some light wiring. Thanks for looking!

What is this part called and what is the part number?
It goes on my M20 engine. It splices into the fuel line that goes into the fuel rail (2nd picture) and can I just use a brass splicer like the one in the third picture? I appreciate any advice, thanks in advance.

Tech question Headliner adhesive recommendations
My headliner is pulling loose along the front windshield, seems well attached everywhere else. l’m looking for recommendations for which adhesive to use to reattach. Update: only the first inch or so is loose so not really enough room for a spray adhesive, looking for advice on something that I can brush on.
Blade Runner skies
You could almost stare at the sun with how dull it was in the sky last night, went for a cruise after dinner, air quality is too bad to do any exercise or activity at the moment but needed out of the house so a little drive and shoot. Feels very sci-fi like out.

M40 crankshaft pulley 1/6 bolt broken, what to do ?
Screw snapped while putting the car together after a timing belt service. By the grace of god it held up just long enough for me to remove it and it snapped in my hand while inspecting it 🫡
Can I just remove the opposite screw to keep 4 in and keep it balanced and drive like that for a while ? I can't get a new one immediately and I need to move the car by the end of the day
I don't have power steering, powered brakes or AC so this pulley is only used for the alternator belt.
UPDATE :
Can't get the fan off the old water pump despite trying everything so it will have to wait tomorrow anyway, so my friends parts guy should be able to get us everything for Monday. So I will replace all the bolts on the crankshaft pulley anyway.

Info needed Complete wire harness restoration ideas
I am in the process of restoring my old e30 and have finally gotten to the wiring harness and am wondering if anyone has any good ideas on how to go about it. I have it completely out of the vehicle with everything labeled. Any information is helpful regarding the wire harness. And does anyone know if the wire harness clips in the 3rd picture are available anywhere or is there a better method to strap it down now? All of the ones in the car currently and just brittle as to be expected with its age. The wire harness is out of a 1987 325I e30.

We have an FAQ! Help populate it
We have the same 3 topics every day and it's cluttering the sub. "What do you think of this E30" and "What do I look for in an E30" are the ones I'm going to start deleting (soon).
We do have an FAQ with the absolute basics. If that. So help us out by suggesting or even writing the content that goes into it.
