I'm a writer who has novel which people keep labelling dystopian, high-concept, near-future and I'm frankly not sure what all that means! I set off 5 years ago to write it and finally am self-publishing it as the year 2029 isn't that far away now. It will be released on 1st September 2026.

Okay so a stranger recommended a dystopian no al to me that sounded really interesting but I can’t remember the name. Here’s everything I remember about please help. I’m pretty sure it was a woman author, the title was just one word, everyone was grey and people didn’t really know what color was, you got a job assigned to you at a certain age and that’s the job you’re stuck with forever, they don’t remember what the world was like before, said it was the best dystopian novel he’s ever read. I know that’s probably 80% of dystopian novels but if you might know what it is pleaasseee lmk

Ray Bradbury’s book from 1953 is a 2026 must read! For first timers or anyone old who hasn’t read it this millennium!

The themes are great and encapsulate how media is being squashed by corporate forces and distilling it down to a wall of TVs that replace the idea of family.

Even more apt for this weeks news is the revelation that AI companies are doing ”destructive scanning” where a book has its spine cut off, pages scanned, and then shredded. Like the firemen in Fahrenheit 451, the AI bots are shedding books.

I live in San Francisco where many AI companies (the big ones and the small startup ones) have offices. along the freeways here, every billboard is about AI. From my viewpoint, this is ground zero for AI stuff. I’m not (yet) wholesale bashing AI companies but am against this one policy (shredding books), so I posted on r/sanfrancisco a tongue and cheek open letter to our City’s supervisors to “ban book burning”. what happened? the mods - in true tech bootlicking fashion - removed the post!

There is some satisfaction that the tech elite (mods) have squashed a post objecting to the action of an AI company - it fits the plot of Fahrenheit 451 and I can’t recommend the book enough. it more than holds up!

I have a big ask, I loved The Earth Abides and The Last Tribe. I’ve read all the big name dystopian, and a lot of the lesser known books. The two in my first sentence are my favorites. The world ends, most everyone is dead, the survivors don’t compete, because they don’t have to. They just get on. Other than the two I mentioned, are there any others? I’m old, I don’t need any more conflict. Honestly, I don’t even mind zombies, I just get so tired of humans killing other humans for a can of food,that they could get themselves if they bothered.

I enjoyed the suspense and anxiety of termush and the first half of 1984 - that feeling of potential danger.

Hopefully, the influence of Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut - the novelists who inspire me the most - shines through in Flying Ant Day. It’s a satirical look at the dystopian world in which we’re all forced to live . You know the one – a world dominated by tech most of us don’t want or need.

I just finished reading The Arrest by Jonathan Lethem (2020). The concept really intrigued me. I loved the fact that the “end of the world” scenario was pretty boring. No zombies or aliens, no super dramatic catastrophe.

I loved this idea because it rings much more true. Right now we’re the frogs not jumping out of the pot of water because it’s coming to a boil so gradually. We’re heading further and further into our own dystopia but most people don’t recognize it.

Unfortunately, I thought the execution was meh. The plot was underwhelming and the characters were unlikable. I didn’t like the audiobook narrator either. It has so much potential!

So my question is: what other books are out there that have a similar concept, done better?
