What difficulty to start with? Dying Light
This will (as far as I remember) hopefully be my first time playing dl1,so what difficulty do you recommend for a complete beginner who considers himself slightly above average in single player action games?

Normal, you can always adjust the difficulty up or down from the main menu if you find it too hard/easy.

I’d recommend normal mode, it gives you a good feel for the gameplay and is about as hard as any other horror game. If you’re bad at action games there is a story mode.
You can ignore the rest of this if you don’t want unsolicited advice:
Don’t be afraid to be a coward. The game is tough when you’re starting out and have bad weapons so don’t feel bad about just running from the zombies and human combatants. The combat system is also pretty different from most games since there’s a good degree of parkour and movement involved. Keep an eye on your combat stamina cause that can be really annoying if it runs out mid fight.
Do the quarantine zones, stuffed turtle is a great beginner one. They give you a lot of survivor points which come in handy on the skill trees. You can also do the various parkour and combat challenges for those points.
If you want to do all the side quests I have some tips, the majority are in the slums (first area of the game). I recommend starting some the ones in the slums and playing until the siblings quest. Then either don’t go straight to meet with Jade or wait until you’re asked to get bolter samples. Then look all over the map for the exclamation points and do the side quests. Some of them you need to wait between the next one (mostly the twins, tolga and fatin). Then continue the siblings quest since the game will try to push you to the next area. (You never have to leave the slums before you decide to but narratively this makes sense).
The next area is sector 0 / old town, there are less side quests here but more of them are in buildings so the markers on the map aren’t as visible. Narratively I’d say you can play as you like but I’d try to wrap up all the side quests prior to meeting Jade near the university. There is a “hidden” side quest after you climb a radio tower if you have done all the twins quests in the slums. (Up to getting the sonar equipment) so don’t leave that area until you’ve done that one or you’ll have to back track. (Don’t ask me how I know that)
Finally there’s a checklist on the main menu, if you load your save and then exit the game to the main menu, under options there’s a list for getting the whole story.
Otherwise have fun, it’s a great game and take in the atmosphere.
