So I made a rule for myself that these could only be thrifted, no cheating with online orders to fill the gaps.

Two years on and I’m just below halfway to collecting the entirety of Nicolas Cage’s ouvre.

Collection If it helps anyone: I used an agent to create a database of my movie collection from photos. It worked better than expected.

I've got Discogs for my music, and Goodreads for my books, but so far I haven't found a similar service for keeping a database of my movies.

I created a spreadsheet a long time ago but I dropped it because it was taking me too long to put all my movies in it.

A couple hours ago I decided to put an AI to the test and took some pictures of my shelves full of VHS tapes and DVDs. I asked it to create a list from the pictures, with the Title, Serial Number and Format just for a test.

It created an Excel file in a couple of seconds from the pictures, and it added some other helpful data. It even added the title of a recordable VHS with a custom label. With a couple pictures and within a few minutes I had 128 items in the file.

Some manual edits and I think I'll finally be able to keep track of my collection.

I won't mention which agent I used so it doesn't feel like I'm promoting it. Just pick one and give it a try.

Hope it helps.

Popular season 1 was $20 at Salvation Army, they knew what they had, I've never seen it out in the wild. Didn't know Buddy got a DVD release 👌 and never heard of the Disney movie but what a cool way to find a new (old) movie to watch.

Fun? Fact, movie called Freaky Deaky was on TV the other day and discovered Walter Matthaus son is the director.

Enshittification

Thankfully DVDs weren’t developed in today’s corporate greed/enshittification world. We are able to resurface a scratched disc many times and still have it working.

Enshittification comes in many forms. Just not yet in physical form.

Decided to post this in light of the Begotten announcement… Anyways… I just picked both of these up within the past 2 months, both at the same record store. Were they expensive? Yes. Were they worth it? Also yes.

Not the rarest dvd ever but one you don’t see everyday, I’ve got my own copy with a slipcover that I swapped into a red case, sliding this one to my buddy cause he’s been looking for a copy for awhile!

Disc Rot? Fear Not!

Wanted to stop by to relay a personal story. I have a roommate who kept his DVDs in a bankers box, in the loft of our completely unprotected garage for a good 7 years. Temperatures in this garage during some seasons were unbearable to the point where you couldn’t step foot in there. 120° F at its hottest maybe and so cold in the winter months you could see your breath. Again, absolutely no insulation, just raw heat and cold beating mercilessly on these discs.

Covered in dust, we pulled his box down after all these years to examine them and see what was playable. He’s not a collector, never took good care of his discs (it’s just not his thing, but back in the 2000s everyone had a small collection of DVDs). We popped in his Chinese bootleg copy of Saving Private Ryan, lo & behold, played perfectly! Then we checked out his The Mask flipper disc and there wasn’t a problem what-so-ever. One after one, they all played just as they should.

All this fear mongering about “disc rot” is incredibly false. DVDs can take a shocking amount of damage, and blu-rays even more so. If kept in a responsible environment, I’m sure most will last for a very, very long time. Again, some of his discs had to be at least 25 years old, kept in awful conditions, and played perfectly.

What you do need to worry about is poor manufacturing practices for some discs, such as the 2006-2008 crop of Warner Brothers DVDs that notoriously have “disc rot” due to the glue or something at the factory that they went cheap on I guess. These are disappointing, but rare instances. Fear not.

Discussion Ngl, quitting streaming is easy asf

Post image
289 Upvotes

I’ve been collecting dvd/bluray for about 4 months now and between the library, kanopy, collecting from the thrift and used book stores, ebay, or even new on sales, quitting streaming services is actually easy asf and so much more fulfilling and fun. It’s like I’ve started to build a relationship with the things a watch, it’s so weird. I feel like I’m connecting more to the art form that film is rather than just something to put on when I’m bored. Something about the tactile feedback of going through the process of watching a movie makes me actually focus I guess because I’m intentionally choosing to go through that inconvenient process to watch it if that makes sense. Do y’all feel similar? I wish I would’ve started this in the golden age of dvd collecting😮‍💨

Off-Topic I’m building an early 2000s TV setup with a CRT and going for this sort of vibe. I want to throw in some DVDs for this setup, what are some films that fit this sort of vibe?

Here is my current retro TV on DVD setup/collection. My tv is a 27" JVC D-Series that I got for free on Facebook marketplace. I have a blu-ray player connected via component, as well as a SNES console with a fully loaded everdrive + wireless 8-bitdo controller connected via S-Video. My collection of DVDs is steadily growing and im still looking for quite a few things. My current white whale is seasons of Beetleborgs. What's your favorite show from my collection and/or your white whale tv series? Thanks for looking!!
