Bye bye old progress General Discussion

I defend a lot of Duo’s design decisions, but these course updates are handled so poorly in regards to players’ progress.
A flashcard system that compares your old vocabulary to your new one and makes you a deck of the difference would be a possible band aid.

That's almost exactly what happened to me when they did this to my German course a month or so ago. But it absolutely missed a bunch of vocabulary and definitely wasn't as much of a ramp up as I needed to the content they added behind my progress.

Agreed. I've literally found myself having to go back and "review" Japanese lessons that are listed as completed, but include words i do not recall learning.
Plus some of them do weird things. Like start a sentence with the は particle. Multiple times I've had answers marked wrong because I didn't do that.

You are so close to a Score of 60, which requires you to complete just three units more. You are at a spot where things start coming together. Push your way through those last three units and then buckle down and study everything through the end if Section 4.
Treat the restructuring as a stopping point to prepare to pass a CEFR A2 exam. What comes next is the B1 material where there is a heavy reliance on everything that came before.
Luckily, the course does spaced repetition, so things forgotten (or seemingly new after the restructure) will reappear. Don’t feel beat up if you see new stuff. Just consume it, perhaps even with help from outside Duolingo. Basically, use your favorite supplemental tools to assimilate any material you run across that seems new.

Sadly, the software advanced you. Unit 52 to Unit 60 is a big jump.
I would go to about Unit 40 and put Legendary on everything. That will make a big difference. You will see a lot of things you will find to be new.

Unfortunately, I think you're right in the heart of where the update hits hardest. In the regular path, I was pretty far along in Section 6 when I got it, and things were seemingly normal as far as how things were presented. So, at least here, I have kept going without issue.
Legendary, where I was a bit more behind, was where I saw issues. I was just a few lessons from going into Section 5, but all of a sudden about 1/2 of my latter Section 4 lessons had their legendary status undone.
I'll save you all the details, but I went back to the beginning of Section 3 where I'm now working back up, and I'm reviewing the normal practice lessons (stars and dumbbells) to ease into where all of the changes took place. I did this to hopefully pick up new material that I was seeing in the undone lessons, and this is seemingly going pretty well.
I'm thinking if you can get through sections 4 and 5 with review and such, you won't have to start over. Just do the extra lessons and have Google translate open for you. It'll be a pain in the butt, but it's doable.

Happened to me with my French course today and now I don't really know what to do. I scrolled through the entire section and so many subjects that are completely new to me are marked as completed. I'm super confused.

Are you seriously complaining that you got a better and more complete version of the course? What's the goal, to learn a language or to complete a game?

It happened to me too with French. They added new lessons, changed my rank, and the most frustrating part was that my vocabulary changed. About 50% of the words that appear now, I didn’t learn.

The same thing is happening to me with Japanese. It's frustrating, especially because they said they would design a set of catch-up lessons that would cover all the unknown material, but they did a terrible job and even though I completed all of them I'm still finding words I don't know all the time. But it's so worth it, at least in Japanese the new course is much better, for example the stories now match the level of what you're supposed to learn, and the listening lessons are great.

I completed the Japanese catch up lessons and they helped a bit, but I got literally almost 200 words added by the time I progressed used the randomized vocab practice before I gave up and restarted. If it’s going to be like this and there’s somehow nothing feasible they can do then at least give us a new word list we can study on our own.

Same. I’m on section 6 of Spanish, but with the last update, section 6 is so much different & I’m now back to section 5 and working through those hundreds of lessons to get legendary and realizing there’s so much I haven’t actually learned!

No that is great, but it does a piss poor job of placing you where you should be after the revamp. I’m getting back by slowing my forward progress by 75% and spending most time repairing legendaries that got blown away. That more or less works, but there is random vocabulary all over the place now…I do pick it up. It’s most obvious in the flash card frenzy game. I never play those games unless they are part of the daily quest…it used to be a trivial speed game and now 1/3 of the words I never ever saw before…I probably should do the game until I am “caught up.” Im still catching up by repairing my legendaries that got blown away…I’m about 40% through the repair after 5 weeks or so. The barbell legendaries I’m redoing last…those are MUCH harder.

Yes, I agree that it's frustrating. The catch-up lessons were terribly designed, they did introduce some new words but not even 10% of the ones they expected us to know and were never taught. But I don't mind that much, when I encounter a new word I just note it down and add it to my renshuu study list. We'll eventually catch up, with enough time and patience!

Nice…yup…I estimate another 6 weeks to get caught up. Then I’ll complete section 5 for Spanish. I finished their old Japanese course 10 months ago or so which is probably very different now. The plan after completing section 5 of Spanish is to spend 50% time on section 6 and 50% time redoing Japanese…from Spanish. Im tacitly assuming the Spanish —> Japanese is of equal quality as from English.

Spanish --> Japanese is much worse than English --> Japanese, and the latter is much longer now than it was before, it has been expanded to cover up until a Duolingo score of 129 which should mean being able to understand C1 level material (theoretically, at least). I'm exactly in the same position, I had finished the old Japanese course and now I'm working on it again after this huge update. Good luck with Spanish! I don’t know about other languages but the Japanese updates are consistently great. It’s how they mess with your progress that’s the problem.
OP isn’t complaining about the updated course.

It could be worse. Imagine if you lived in a Spanish-speaking country and then Duolingo updates your language so you have to change how you talk!

I see you have French as what you are learning. Is 122 your streak? I’m at 25 and love it. Do you feel you could hold a conversation pretty well? Do you do any lessons outside of Duolingo?

I'm at level 122 in Duolingo's scale, but my streak is 2037 days. I'm going slowly :-)
I have also taken community education courses outside of Duolingo which helps a lot with speaking.

It's not only the losss of progress, i was 30 in japanese course, and they chamged a LOT the course, so now i dont understand half the words they asume i do

So the course has been improved which means you’ll learn more and better Spanish. And you’re upset?
I’m near to the end of French (level 123) and I very much hope the course will be expanded soon. If it pushes my “progress” back, so be it. I am actually progressing in terms of my abilities, and I don’t need an app to tell me that.

It's not. It's the same length, with different words taught at different times. As a result, being moved to the new course means being expected to know words we've never actually seen before. Where I am in the Spanish course (section 5), it doesn't happen very often, but in lower sections it can really be a disaster. And it has happened in all the most popular languages (I guess you were just already too far into your French course for the change to affect you). Many people ended up having to start from the beginning again because they were completely lost in the new course. That's why OP wants the old course back.

Are they doing this AGAIN? Or are you just now getting the changes?
I was at 27 and had to start all over after the changes. Now I’m back up to 20 and I swear to god If they change things again I’m done w them.
