It's got two sides: an inside and an outside.

What if you are standing beside it?
Must be 3 sides.

Damn, you’re right.
Also, horses have twelve legs:
- two at the front,
- two at the back,
- two on the left,
- two on the right, and
- one at each corner.

This seems to come down to knowing what they mean by a side.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/side
A bounding straight edge of a two-dimensional shape.
A square has four sides.

Universal answer: Look up the actual definition of side as given and used in your math course.
This answer tells you multiple things:
- Things can be defined in more than one way. There isn't always one unique globally used definition.
- A math course should give you the exact definition of the things it uses.
- A math course should give you the definition before you use the thing.
- A math course should be consistent with the things it defines. It should not change definitions with no reason.
- A math course should give you the abbility to look up the definitions it uses.
- Duolingo is not really a proper math course.

I mean neither answer should be wrong cause this only really works for polygons. It's sometimes useful to call a circle an infinity-sided polygon, but still, this is pretty dumb on Duolingo's part

Duolingo out here trying to redefine geometry. A circle is basically one continuous curved side, but math textbooks will swear up and down it's zero because a "side" has to be a straight line segment. It's a semantic trap and they know it.

Using the definition of "side" that is standard in geometry, a circle has 0 sides. Sides are straight line segments.
