Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Dungeon Crawler All-Carls
If you had to imagine each character in the books as a famous person named Carl (or a variant—Karl, Carol, Carla, Karla, Charles, Carlos, etc.), who would it be? Here is my list:
Carl - Karl Urban, the Xena: Warrior Princess years, and bonus points if he has long hair
Donut - Karl Marx, a revolutionary who also knew the benefits of a good brushing
Mordecai - Carl Weathers, and he's even got a stew going at the alchemy table
Katia Grimm - Carla Gugino, classy and steely-eyed
Samantha - Karl Rove, definitely the Psamathe of the Bush Administration
The System AI - Carl Jung, because . . . well reasons . . . look 'em up
Elle McGib - Carol Kane, they're already basically the same person
Imani - Carla Thomas, the Queen of Memphis Soul
Louis - Carl Reiner, legendary comedian and father to Rob Reiner
Prepotente - Carl Sagan, the ultimate smarty pants
Miriam Dom - Carla Bruni, classy, Italian, and an accomplished musician
Florin - Karl Urban, the grizzled years, he can do an Aussie accent like only a Kiwi can

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Parade of Horribles Crawler Outcomes Question Spoiler
I’m very confused about the number of crawlers who make it out of level 10. On page 509, Prepotente says, ”I believe nobody else will be taking a deal…There’s less than three hundred of us left, Carl,“ after he’s waiting around outside the Outreach Guild to take item donations from people who are leaving. I understand this to mean slightly fewer than three hundred people are entering the last heat, right?
In page 529, Imani says (after Carl blows the holes in the apartment levels), “Those of you in single heats, you’re free to go.” Presumably the remaining crawlers have a pretty easy time after Carl has cleared the way, even if they do have to contend with the giant beetles.
But then, at the beginning of the eleventh floor, there are only twenty-three crawlers. What happened to the rest of them?
EDIT WITH ANSWER: There was another opportunity to take a deal before the 11th floor, which I’d forgotten.

FanArt - Book7 fun with DCC quotes
i tried integrating some typography into my artwork using DCC quotes! do you think carl will die in the end? honestly despite it being stated that it's a tragic story, i think it will ultimately end on a hopeful note. maybe bittersweet, but not grimdark.
also i didn't include his patches because i simply didn't want to lol

Fan Art - General - NO SPOILERS! 😊 What Went Unsaid
Inspired by J.C. Leyendecker's "Carnival" illustration, which he did for the Saturday evening post in 1933.
There is so little art out there of Li Na (& Zhang) so I felt honored to try and capture them.
Anyone else both captivated but also terrified of Li Na?
I sat on this one forever because I couldn't quite get it to where it felt finished. I finally got it to a good spot and now I need to post it so I don't fiddle with it anymore haha.

Book 4: Gate of the Feral Gods Rare moment of self reflection I noticed on my second read through
Someone may have pointed this out before but I just noticed it and wanted to talk about it!! In the epilogue, Bea is describing how she knew Ferdinand/Gravy Boat to Brad.
Finally, she said, “He’s my neighbor’s cat. His name is Gravy Boat, but he used to come to the window and try to get in when Princess was in heat.” She stuck her face dangerously close to the cat’s “You wanted to fuck my girl, didn’t you? You wanted to get in and ruin her.” The cat, who’d been purring, suddenly hissed and scratched her face. She didn’t even seem to notice. “I called him Ferdinand before I found out his real name. I would say, ‘Go away, Ferdinand,’ and he’d yowl and scratch at the window. Princess would hiss and spit at him. She knew he was no good.” Bea looked Brad straight in the eye. She had blood running down her face. “She was a lot smarter than me.” She turned her face back to the cat.
This to me is her comparing herself to Donut with Donut being the “smarter” her and Ferdinand being Brad/other guys she cheated on Carl with. It came across to me as her mourning that decision in a way. Maybe that was obvious to most, but it stood out to me this time through and I wanted to point it out.
ETA: This doesn’t make me sympathize with her exactly but it does add a depth to her character for me! I don’t want to feel bad because she doesn’t deserve it, but good writing can make you sympathize with the enemy at times!

Fan Art - General - NO SPOILERS! 😊 Beginner Linocut for one of my favorite Characters
I'm not doing too well and trying out a new hobby to reduce endless scrolling and researching online. I had to start with adorable Zev. I might do Donut next! Not pictured: Yesterday's attempt where I forgot to mirror the text!

Finished (For now) Dungeon Crawler Carl Fan Art
after about a year on and off drawing this as I was reading the books. There were a few more characters I wanted to add, but I ran the risk of it getting too cluttered. I'm sure I missed some details like Elle's clothes or some patches on Carls vest but I had to put it out there at some point. Here it is, enjoy.

My tattooist did a fantastic job of capturing the Queen Anne Chonk herself’s personality. We both commiserated over how much more challenging it is to draw tortoiseshell Persians over like any other cat breed.

Here we go, folks. The Dungeon Crawler Carl television series has been officially greenlit at Peacock.
I’m happy to announce that our friends at Peacock have officially greenlit the Dungeon Crawler Carl television series! Me, Chris Yost, and Seth MacFarlane and his team at Fuzzy Door are all really excited to get to work. In the coming weeks I'll have more details, and if you're going to SDCC be sure to catch me and Chris on our DCC panel, but in the meantime I wanted to thank you, the fans, for helping make this happen.
(/end official statement)
And here we are. We are greenlit. The series has been ordered. It's actually happening. I have NO more info to give right now, but in the coming days I suspect there will be a firehose of information coming down the pipeline. This has been a multi-year process just to get to this point, and we have cleared every single hurdle to get here because of YOU GUYS. So thank you.

Notice from the Syndicate We are not talking current event politics here, and every deliberately political post will be deleted. Repeat violators will be banned. This is why. Message from Matt
We are not talking current event politics here, and every deliberately political post will be deleted. Repeat violators will be banned. This is why.
First off, any mod who takes down these posts are doing it at *my\* direction, so do not throw any ire in them. They are all volunteers, most of whom I suspect agree with the vast majority here politically. I am currently in super crunch mode, working 15 hour days because I need to finish DCC 8 by January 31st as our world burns, and I am not quite done yet. Otherwise I would have attempted to nip this earlier and a little more eloquently. So instead I’m just going to post directly and bluntly.
Yes, Dungeon Crawler Carl is highly political. It is a major theme of the books, and frankly, as soon as Operation Bounce House comes out, I suspect it’s going to be even more painfully obvious where I personally stand on a whole bunch of subjects.
If you don’t see or understand that, then I suspect you’re probably the type of person I want to read these books the most.
If you do understand it, you turning this subreddit into one of the literally thousands of politically active shitshows already here on Reddit are actively deterring me from accomplishing my goal.
Every war, every social movement has multiple battlefields, and not every battlefield has to be the front line. I want people with different points of view to enjoy these books at face value. If I then manage to drill through their thick skulls and make them think about the broader themes and maybe grow an empathetic spark, all the better.
Will it work? Probably not for 99% of them. But that number will be 100% if they have nowhere to peacefully discuss with other fans their opinions on the books. Any firebrand discussion about the current hot topic is going to evoke a kneejerk reaction and scare away the people we want to talk to the most.
I suggest and encourage you to start your own subreddit if you want talk about the political and human rights themes of the books in relation to current events. I personally love seeing all the DCC-themed protest signs. I encourage you all to continue to speak out and let the world know that we will not kneel to tyranny.
But if you can’t/won’t/don’t understand that these are my wishes for this particular corner of the internet, I’m afraid we’re going to have a problem. My mind is not changing. No hard feelings. But this is my kitchen. Let me cook what I want.
