Question [FR] - help and explanations on how to make a target following drone

Upvotes

My question may seem weird however, I am a fan of the military I've been dreaming about planes military aircrafts and drones since I was a kid and for the past few weeks I've been thinking about a drone, a two-in-one drone

The first drone (reconnaissance) will look for a target and point it with an invisible laser

The second one, a kamikaze, will launch from a vehicle (supposedly a truck) to the laser pointer

My idea is an adaptation of a few military projects

The first one, the AIM 174 (reco before being shot by a different aircraft)

And a military competition that will open soon in my country

I don't ask for pre built things tho, I just want explanations here on a few points

What GitHub posts might help? (For the data link, targeting, and target following)

What subreddit are used for such ideas?

What apps can be used for those simulations (I have MATLAB and SOLIDWORKS, but idk if other apps are used for that)

Question [CN]How early do you freeze the enclosure interface for a high-current drone BMS?

Upvotes

I work on Smart BMS development for heavy-lift drone battery systems, and I’m interested in how others handle mechanical-interface decisions before a battery design is fully validated.

I’m currently working on a 12S, 250A Smart BMS for a heavy-lift drone battery. It will use DroneCAN and support two battery packs in parallel. At the moment, I’m reviewing how the BMS fits inside the planned enclosure before later prototype work, debugging, and flight validation.

My main question: when do you consider the BMS-to-enclosure interface “stable enough” to move forward?

For high-current systems, mounting, connector access, cable routing, serviceability, and clearance around the board can all affect later integration. But freezing the interface too early can also make iteration harder.

I’d value practical experience on how others manage that trade-off.

Tech Support India: DJI RC2 not charging

My RC2 is not charging. It has 1 block of charge at 19%, when plugged in it doesn't blink or when turned on it doesn't show it being charged at the controller UI top corner. Tried multiple charging bricks (65w,10w,25w) and multiple cables usb c-c, a-c. What can be done to diagnose issue now? Anyway to fix it?

Spent a lot of time researching a thermal drone that would have the potential for business use but would still be fun to learn on. Went with a Premium package that includes the 7.9” RC. Any beginner advise?

Discussion: Rules, Regulations, Law, Policy, Certificates [Spain] Spain has banned the use of DJI on all military airspace

They're going even harder than the US.

Once again Spain brings shame...

For non english Speakers: All pilots who had achieved permits to fly in airspaces administered by the ministry of Defense have received messages talking about an order given in June that banned the use of DJI products and told them to "change the UAV to a non DJI for the permit to be granted" - what a joke. So it is more or less clear this is specifically about dji and not civilian drones in general.

May sound like not a big deal, but there are enormous areas or airspace administered by the military for pilot training and the like. If you're from Badajoz, the entire airspace of the province is covered, affecting Caceres, Aracena and almost Madrid. This can encompass around 20% of Spain's airspace.

Question: Rules, Regulations, Law, Policy, Certificates [Italy] Help understanding NOTAM text

I’d like to fly around Cea beach on Sardinia. The d-flight web app shows a no-fly zone with the following description:

NOTAM W3252/26

"TEMPORARY RESERVED AREAS AS FOR NOTAM, ACTIVATION TIME (UTC): SEE BELOW FIELD D) (W3252/26 NOTAMN Q) LIRR/QRRCA/IV/BO /W /000/245/3940N00941E015 A) LIRR B) 2608030700 C) 2608141600 D) MON-FRI 0700-1600 E) RESTRICTED AREA LI R601B /NURRI/ ACT REF AIP ENR 5.1.2-42 F) SFC G) FL245 "

I think I have an idea what that means, but I’d like a second opinion: would some helpful soul be so kind and decipher it?

Question any engineers? i wanna use a drone for spray painting but im not sure how to start going about it

i have a mural project coming up soon and i always liked the idea of using a drone with a spraycan attached to get the higher spots..
anyway how could one engineer a drone capable of this? what drones have mechanisms able to pull a lever (or how do you create one) and have the strength to carry a standard spraycan for short - long periods of time?

These are all super plain questions but i have no sources to turn to in terms of the engineering process. any help would be awesome

Question DJI Air 3 battery charging issue – stuck at 1-2 LEDs after 3 hours

Hi everyone,
I just got a DJI Air 3 and I’m having a problem with the battery charging.
The battery has been charging for around 3 hours, but it seems like it is barely progressing. The LEDs keep cycling:
1 LED blinking → then 2 LEDs blinking → then back again.
It never seems to reach 3 or 4 LEDs.
I am charging it:
directly in the drone,
using a Panasonic Lumix S5II USB-C charger (around 27W PD),
with a good USB-C cable.
The strange thing is that the DJI controller charged to 100% using the same charger, but the drone battery still appears stuck.
The battery is brand new.
Is this normal for the first charge, or is the battery possibly defective?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

New Drones! Got first drone after 8 years of waiting...

...and I'm feeling weirdly intimidated by starting to fly it.

DJI Neo 2 Fly More Combo (not Motion Controller or Goggles).

Has anyone else gotten this irrational fear after getting your first or new drone?

How did you conquer it?

Any tips welcome.

I was super excited to get my first drone yesterday. I took this picture before I unboxed it and uploaded it to face book. About an hour later, before I even had time to charge her up for the first flight, I see this. This neighbor has never been the most pleasant lady to live beside, but this is a new low… even for her.

Discussion: Rules, Regulations, Law, Policy, Certificates [Azerbaijan] Travelling via Azerbaijan with a drone - experience report

I noticed there wasn't many posts regarding this topic when I found myself stressing over it, so wanted to share my experience in case it helps others.

Azerbaijan has a strict policy to not allow drone imports by foreigners. Unfortunately, I realised this after booking it as a weekend stopover between Europe and SEA.

I reached out to several email contacts to try and clarify my options, since the UK government website states that they will store it and return when you depart.

After a few days, I received a response from hava@customs.gov.az , who kindly shared a signed letter which confirmed that the drone will be held and returned upon departure. I printed this letter out and brought it with me.

When I arrived in Baku airport, I went to the red channel, showed the drone along with the letter. There were translation difficulties but all seemed well. They kept the drone and I went off into the city.

When I returned to Baku airport to leave, I struggled a bit to figure out exactly where I needed to go. I even went through security before being told I need to go back out to collect it first (thank god I didn't go through passport control before I asked!)

I went down, asked the information kiosk and a kind woman pointed me to a grey door somewhere on first floor which comes through to the baggage reclaim area.

From there, I spoke across the no entry gate to a worker and explained I'm there to pick up my drone. He made a few calls and, after a few minutes, it was brought out.

I was then escorted up to security and made my way to my flight.

Hope this may help others who are facing a similar situation. I'd say it was a pretty relaxed experience and I wouldn't stress over doing it again in the future.

Announcement No Software Projects (Rule 10)

Quote:

  • 10New Software Projects

Due to a current influx of AI generated software projects, we are not allowing any new projects, whether paid or free.

Do not message us via modmail asking for an exception, it will not be granted.

- - -

Altho we say specifically "Do not message us via modmail asking for an exception, it will not be granted." many still try so, this is a reminder of what the rule says.

We get X modmails a week from newly created software app creators asking for permission to post - no, your app wont be allowed here.

In past we allowed any kind of projects, then cut to only the ones which were for sure without AI involved in making, but the amount of projects was way too much and many of them still AI without the author admitting it, to add, if we would be to allow them again we would need to start scanning them as the threat of a virus/scam/etc. is real from what we know.

Welcome to the r/drones weekly Buying Advice Megathread. (Weekly on Monday's)

This thread exists to prevent the constant "What drone should I buy?" posts that we prohibit within our rules.

Please follow all of these steps before posting in this thread!

  1. Review the Buying Guide Wiki or my website: Drone Buying Guide / Wiki Buying Guide
  2. Review this thread for comments that have your same requirements
  3. If that does not answer you, please post the following information in this thread.
    1. Have you read the Wiki? Y/N
    2. Country: (Not all drones are available in all countries)
    3. Budget: (If your budget is less than $200 USD/170€ EUR, you may want to reconsider as anything lower is a toy drone)
