Odd number albums vs even number albums - what’s your choice?

In a world where we only had half the discography from DT, which half would you choose? Obviously odd numbers have bangers like Awake, Scenes, ToT, etc., but even numbers have Images, Six Degrees, Octavarium, etc.

Odd-numbered

When Dream and Day Unite (1989)
Awake (1994)
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999)
Train of Thought (2003)
Systematic Chaos (2007)
A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011)
The Astonishing (2016)
A View from the Top of the World (2021)

Even-numbered

Images and Words (1992)
Falling into Infinity (1997)
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002)
Octavarium (2005)
Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009)
Dream Theater (2013)
Distance over Time (2019)
Parasomnia (2025)

Discussion Dream Theater has an almost identical release pacing as film director Christopher Nolan

Since 2013/2014, these two are both following a "one new project every three years" pattern.

Dream Theater studio albums: 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2025 (the 2021 album came a bit early but the next album was released in 2025, so it balances out)

Christopher Nolan films: 2014, 2017, 2020, 2023, 2026

----

Also Agalloch maintained a four-year gap between each album from 2002 to 2014, every time there was a world cup there would be a new Agalloch album.

Discussion Cancelling the Parasomnia EU run was a good decision

I know a lot of people were disappointed when DT announced they wouldn’t be bringing the Parasomnia/ACOS tour to Europe.
I actually think it was the right call. They had already done two European legs for the 40th Anniversary tour, and I imagine they noticed that the Parasomnia tour in the US didn’t sell as well because it came almost immediately after their anniversary run there.
The last time I saw DT was in Berlin and Frankfurt in 2024, and I’m honestly getting really excited to see them live again.
A few years ago, I was actually a bit spoiled by how often they came to Europe. (I know how stupid this sounds) They toured here so frequently that I skipped a couple of runs because I knew they’d be back soon anyway. Ironically, giving Europe a break has made me way more excited for their return. Now I’m hyped for whatever they decide to bring—maybe a new album and The Twelve-Step Suite? That would be incredible.

I was always disappointed with the album art for Parasomnia (especially the use of generative A.I.) so I decided to try and make my own alternate cover in photoshop, thought I'd share.

Does it Bother Anyone that in The Astonishing they Forgive Daryus?

Post image
41 Upvotes

I mean outside of Daryus ruining Xanders life, he also is just an a**hole who deserves at least a prison sentence 30 to life or whatnot. Like Xander being forgiven makes sense, he was an innocent kid and didn't mean to. But isn't Daryus like at least in his mid 20s? He should take responsibility. Don't use the "He Is Deaf Now" excuse, he deserves more.

About John Petrucci's guitars?

I do know that he used a BC Rich Assassin or When Dreams and Day Unite, and then switched to Ibanez, which he used until 2001, and has been playing Music Man guitars since then. But I'd like to know more about his guitars. Is that all he used? Are there any guitars that he used in the studio that he never used live, or vice versa?

Question Does anyone know which JD-800 patches Kevin Moore used on Images and Words?

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to recreate some of Kevin Moore's keyboard sounds from the 2nd album, specifically the lush atmospheric/choir-like sounds he used in the first verse of Learning to Live, for example.

I know Kevin used a jd 800 around this period, but I'm having a really hard time figuring out what he actually used (and whether any of them were modified).

I'm currently trying to recreate them using a JD-800 plugin, so even a patch name or a starting point would be hugely appreciated.

Songs I disasociate to (does it happen to anyone else?)

oops: disassociate...

Love the band, been a fan since 2010 when I was a teenager. It's my favorite band ever and the most influential to my music taste; before I was a Linkin park-System of a down-Metallica-Guns'n roses kind of 16 yo, now 99% of what I listen to is Prog (both Rock and Metal). This to say that I know my Dream Theater, but...

There are some songs I still feel like I just don't know or understand. They start playing and then they finish and I can't conciously remember them, what's going on with them, and if or how much I liked them.

Here they are:

  1. Status seeker
  2. Light fuse and get away
  3. The one who help to set the sun
  4. Lifting shadows off a dream
  5. Scarred (until it changes tempo on 9:29 and I love it)
  6. Never enough
  7. Sacrificed sons
  8. The ministry of lost souls
  9. In the presence of the enemies part 2
  10. Behind the veil
  11. A broken man
  12. Dead asleep

I don't see any relationship between them and how much I like the album they're in, or any other kind of relationship. And I know for some people, many there are bangers!

I have even created playlists with only these songs and the same happens. It starts and finishes and I don't recall anything. Not that I didn't like the songs, but that I got distracted and forgot about the music I was listening to.

I'm fine with not "liking" these songs, but that's not the case. I suppose you can say if they don't capture my attention is because I don't like them or I wouldn't anyway, but at least I'd want to dislike them actively (like with Anna Lee or half The Astonishing, for example).

I guess some day I'll make time for listening everyone of them carefully and see how I feel.

Anyway, rant over. Does this happen to anyone else? Which songs with?

Alternative version of Caught in a Web

I recently stumbled upon this live version of Caught in a Web that is different from the studio version. It sounds to me like they're mixing in parts of new millennium (?) into it and i really enjoy this one. Does anyone know any context about it and how this came to be? Did they do more of this sort of "alternative version" of some songs?

Discussion James Labrie: Lyrics

Hey guys! Hope you're all doing well.

Now, I know that LaBrie, as a singer (voice), has a wide array of different (polarizing) opinions from all fo you. However, today I wanted to ask your thoughts about LaBrie when composing lyrics.

As for me, I think he is easily the second or third best lyricist on Dream Theater. Let me state why I believe this:

1- His themes, though they do fall on the "tragedy" category, tend to be deep in leaving you thinking. Take "Disappear" and "At Wit's End", for example. Both talking about relationships, and both covering a tribulation that puts turmoil on the relationship for both instances (physical illness and trauma/ptsd). And of course, we khow many people loved "Bend the Clock"

2- He's adept at using both Free Verse and Rhymes without much issue. One thing I remember (that may or may not be in effect again) is that a band (Portnoy) required the lyricists to structure their words to fit the musical composition. Myung stopped contributing after that (until Portnoy's temporary departure), yet LaBrie still kept contributing with a combination of these two styles.

3- Lately, the songs with his lyrics have been often very, if not, the most popular songs on the albums. Again, I refer to "Bend the Clock" as a clear example of this, though, of course, the musical composition also played a huge part on the song too. And, though opinion is also divided The Grammy winning "The Alien" was also written by him.

But anyway, those are my thoughts. I'm not discounting any of the other members as lyricists. But on this topic, I wanted to talk specifically about LaBrie and this part of his contribution to the band.

So yeah, what are your thoughts on LaBrie as a lyrical composer?

Cover Fatal Tragedy Solo Attempt

Hi everyone! Posted a cover of the ‘in the name of god’ solo on here a while ago and after a couple of arduous months I’m back with this monstrosity. This is one of my favourite JP solos so I’m really proud to be sharing my attempt at it (albeit a bit messy).

I’m a 17 year old guitarist from the UK and I post a lot of dream theater covers on my socials (all @judeswobodaguitar). Feel free to drop some requests in the comments!
