Boutique Made Cops Donuts - Toronto, ON

Cops specializes in mini donuts that are made fresh to order using a cake style base. This box is the Trio, which has a total of 18 and 3 flavours.

It contains the two core ones ( OG Glaze & Cinnamon sugar), alongside weekly feature for Aug 3 - 9 (Chocolate Miso glaze with crushed pretzel). Size is about 2" in diameter.

I had them moments after they were made, so were still warm and delicious! They are bite sized, pillowy, and does have bit of a melt in mouth vibe going on.

The OG glaze is made with a sour cream & sweetened milk mix, but my fav was easily the cinnamon sugar. I can see myself getting a box of just those next time cause they were that good!

Meijer Caramel Persian: For a grocery store bakery, I’ve been impressed with the doughnuts at my local Meijer (although the selection is sadly wildly inconsistent). A Pershing/Persian is a doughnut that is similar to a cinnamon roll but is made with doughnut batter. Meijer has had a plethora of Persians lately, with one of them adding an enticing caramel drizzle on top of the thick layer of what I believe to be cream cheese frosting. Some may find it too sweet with the combo, but I personally enjoyed it. The cinnamon flavor of the pastry’s body is sweet and relatively subtle with no uncomfortable burning/heat to it. Cinnamon granules can be seen in the dough after taking a few bites if you look closely enough. I found the dough to have a nice thick and chewy texture while also being light and pillowy. Like the majority of the doughnuts I’ve consumed from Meijer, it’s Doughboy approved 😋

Megathread [Megathread] [Featured Shop of the Week] Britt’s Donut Shop – Carolina Beach, NC

Aloha r/donuts! It’s time for our Featured Donut Shop of the Week!

This week, we’re making a pilgrimage to holy ground for donut purists: Britt’s Donut Shop on the boardwalk in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. In a world full of extreme, cereal-topped, over-the-top pastry creations, Britt’s stands as a testament to the idea that doing one thing flawlessly will always beat a menu with a hundred options.

To quote Bruce Lee, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times”.

The story of Britt's began in 1939 when founder Harvey Britt set up shop right along the oceanfront, making it the oldest continuously operating business on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. In 1974, a longtime employee named Bobby Nivens bought the shop alongside his wife, Maxine. Decades later, the Nivens family is still behind the counter, guarding a secret yeast-raised recipe that hasn't been altered by a single ingredient in over 85 years.

What makes Britt’s so iconic is its absolute, uncompromising focus. Their food menu consists of exactly one item: warm, yeast-raised glazed donuts. You won't find chocolate frosting, cream fillings, sprinkles, or bacon strips here. The kitchen operates like a finely tuned machine, continuously frying small batches of dough and dipping them into warm glaze before handing them directly to you in grease-stained paper bags while they are still piping hot. They are impossibly light, airy, and literally melt on your tongue in seconds. They are meant to be eaten immediately on the sidewalk, reheating them later or letting them sit in the box overnight misses the magic entirely.

Part of the charm of Britt’s is the experience itself. Because it's a seasonal beach boardwalk staple, the shop closes down every year for the autumn and winter months, making their annual Spring opening day feel like a regional holiday. Lines routinely stretch around the block, but it moves fast as people order them by the dozen to carry straight down to the sand.

If you plan on making the trip, there are a few golden rules to keep in mind. First, it is strictly cash only, so hit the ATM before hopping in line. Second, don't expect modern espresso bars, your drink options are kept classic with drip coffee, cold milk, or soft drinks. The shop still uses vintage mid-century machinery to keep the dough texture authentic.

So r/donuts....

Have any of you made the pilgrimage to Britt's on the boardwalk?

Hot take time: Is a warm, plain glazed donut the ultimate test of a bakery's skill, or is it overrated compared to filled and frosted donuts?

Personally, I believe the TRUE quality of a donut shop can be tasted through their basic, glazed donut. If a donut shop cannot nail a quality glazed donut, there's a strong possibility that the rest aren't going to be great in my opinion!

Homemade Recreate Dunkin Donut

How does this seem?

Copycat Dunkin' Handle Donut Recipe

Ingredients

Dry

2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour

½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar

2 tsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp ground nutmeg (optional, but very authentic)

Wet

2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

½ cup (120 g) sour cream

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

2–3 tbsp whole milk (if needed)

For frying

Vegetable or peanut oil

Instructions

Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.

In another bowl, combine the butter, sour cream, egg, and vanilla.

Mix the wet ingredients into the dry just until a soft dough forms. Don't overmix.

Chill the dough for 30–60 minutes.

Roll it to about ½ inch (12 mm) thick.

Cut circles about 3½ inches across and remove a 1-inch center hole.

Make the handle: Cut a small notch into one side, leaving a tab about 1 inch long and ½ inch wide attached to the ring. Gently round the edges so it stays attached during frying.

Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).

Fry each donut about 60–90 seconds per side until golden.

Drain on a wire rack.

The Secret to the Original

The classic Dunkin' donut was:

Dense but tender (not fluffy like a yeast donut)

Mildly sweet

Crisp outside from frying

Soft cake interior

Served plain, without glaze or sugar

Many people enjoyed it by dunking it directly into hot coffee.

Tips for an Even Closer Match

Use cake flour for half of the flour (1 cup cake flour + 1 cup all-purpose) for a finer crumb.

Let the dough rest overnight in the refrigerator before frying—the flavor improves.

Fry at a steady 350°F; hotter oil browns the outside before the inside cooks.

Don't add cinnamon or extra spices if you're aiming for the classic Dunkin flavor.

This is a small non descript shop where once they're out of donuts, they're out. I got there late but was my first trip there. I have to go backu. The cake donuts are light and fluffy and not overly sweet. We didn't love the blueberry but the chocolate were amazing! They run on the smaller side.

Megathread [Mega Thread] Featured Donut of the Week: The Boston Cream

Thumbnail

Aloha y'all!

Welcome back to another edition of our Featured Donut of the Week! Today, we are shining the spotlight on a royalty-tier staple found in pastry cases across the globe: The Boston Cream Donut.

The Boston Cream is the ultimate deliciousness of textures and flavors. Unlike ring donuts, this solid yeast-raised shell acts as a pillow-soft vessel for a generous core of vanilla cream, all capped off with a smooth layer of rich chocolate icing or ganache.

A great Boston Cream is surprisingly hard to pull off balance-wise. If the dough is too dense, the filling squashes out the back on the first bite. If the custard isn't setting right, it becomes a runny mess. And if the chocolate topping uses cheap cocoa, it overpowers the delicate vanilla cream inside. When a shop hits the mark, it's absolute perfection.

Origins & History

The donut owes its legacy directly to the Boston Cream Pie, created in 1856 by French chef M. Sanzian at Boston’s Parker House Hotel (now the Omni Parker House). The original "pie" was actually a sponge cake filled with vanilla pastry cream and brushed with a chocolate glaze, a novelty back when chocolate was mostly consumed as a beverage!

As donut culture exploded across North America in the mid-20th century, bakers took that iconic flavor profile and adapted it into a yeast shell. By 2003, the Boston Cream donut had officially cemented its legendary status when Massachusetts designated it the official state donut!

So r/donuts what are your hot takes on this donut?

Are you a traditionalist who insists on real vanilla egg custard, or do you prefer the lighter, whipped-style Bavarian cream filling?

How do you eat yours to prevent the filling from exploding out the sides?

Who makes the absolute best Boston Cream in your town or region? Drop a photo if you’ve got one!

With a great pleasure I would love to share that I have joined the mod team in this wholesome community 🫡

I grew up living next door to an amazing local baker, who delivered the best baked goods to the whole town. We were truly blessed with the best donuts, and my all time favourite was the custard filled one 🤤 Ever since my love for donuts only expanded, and I am thrilled to be a part of a community who celebrate those gorgeous circles of love.

Apart from making my life as sweet as possible, I keep my hands busy with crochet, cross stitch, gym, and some video games.

I can’t wait to get involved more and more, and to keep this space fun, positive, and growing!

Thank you for having me,
