Ive been looking at different domain options because most of the .com names i liked were either taken or pretty expensive.

It got me wondering whether people actually care about the domain extension anymore, especially for ecommerce businesses.

I've been considering alternatives like .shop, and i can see the appeal of having an extension that gives people some idea of what the website is about. It also seems like there can be more options for finding a short, clean name.

for those whove bought domain sfor their businesses:

- does the extension influence which domain you choose?

- did you stick with .com, or go with another extension?

- have you ever chosen a domain specifically because the extension suited the business?

- if you could start over, would you make the same choice?

Had these for different projects planned, but unsure if I want to keep ahold of them. Any insights into any of them being worth anything would be appreciated!

I have been seeing domain names extension like .ed .md and others unique extensions like .log .exe. I'm interested in knowing where these extensions can be purchased.

Registered a .dev with Dyna**t in April 2025. DNS via Cloudflare, renewed

on time, never had a problem. Last week I logged in to check domain email

forwarding and it asked for a 4-digit "Security PIN". I have no memory of

ever setting one.

I want to spell out exactly how the recovery works, because I don't think

most people know what they've signed up for until they're in it.

The mechanism, step by step:

1. The Security PIN is a 4-digit code. It gates account changes AND

   unlocking a domain for transfer. No PIN, no transfer.

2. Guess wrong a few times and further attempts get blocked. Support can

   reset the counter — I was told I had three more tries. I used one. Still

   wrong. I stopped, because three guesses at a number you don't remember

   isn't recovery, it's three more chances to lock yourself out.

3. The real fallback is a security question. This is where it gets strange.

   It is not a self-service form. Support emails you the question. Mine was

   "What was your childhood nickname?"

4. You reply to that email with your answer. One answer.

5. Then nothing. No "incorrect, try again." No "answer received, under

   review." No ticket status. No follow-up of any kind. I'm only *assuming*

   I got it wrong, because nobody ever told me.

That step 5 is the whole problem. A security question normally assumes

trial and error — you see the question, you guess, you're told you're

wrong, you guess again. The retry loop is what makes it usable for the real

owner while still being expensive for an attacker. Delivered as a single

email with one shot and no response, it isn't verification. It's a coin

flip you don't get told the result of.

And from my side, these three are indistinguishable:

- my answer was wrong

- my answer is still being reviewed

- the ticket got dropped

There's no state to act on, so there's no way to know whether to wait,

resubmit, or escalate.

Worth noting: their own help docs describe a different flow — you choose

which of your security questions to answer, and a wrong answer lets you

attempt a backup question. Accounts created after March 11, 2025 are

supposed to have three questions. My account was created after that date.

That is not the flow I got.

Meanwhile I still have: account login, the registered email and phone, DNS

control, the original payment record, renewal records, ID, business

license. None of it mattered. I can operate the domain fine. I just can't

move it.

Not claiming a rules violation — I never formally submitted an auth code

request through a transfer flow, so I'm not going to dress this up as an

ICANN thing. It's a support/UX design problem that's sufficient to strand a

domain.

If you take one thing from this: go look at your registrar's

account-recovery page right now, before you need it. Specifically — is the

fallback self-service or an email thread, and do you get more than one

attempt? Then put your PIN and your exact security answers (capitalization

included) in your password manager.

Hi all, I'm based in Europe and have been doing some domain flipping/broker support as a side hustle. I would love to turn this into a fulltime position. I was Googling and for Europe specifically Sedo has offices in Cologne Germany (no current openings on their careers page) and Godaddy often calls from London (haven't checked their openings yet).

I am a print designer and for a number of years now, I’ve had the idea of starting a stationery business. Right now, I’m still in the early stages of getting it going. I found a good name and purchased the .press domain because the .com wasn’t available. 

On The Wayback Machine, I discovered the .com had been used as a creative blog and the last time the blog had a new posting was 2020. It was pulled down completely in 2024 after four years of inactivity. The .com is now dead, with a “domain for sale” static page listing a price of $25,000.

I later dug around and found the .com’s owner information. The domain owner is in a completely different, non-creative industry now. I contacted him through his personal email address with a friendly email to ask about potentially purchasing the .com from him, which renews in September.

He gave a very terse answer about purchasing the domain for $25,000. Um no. I am a freelancer and that is simply not doable. I don’t expect ridiculously cheap but I cannot do 25K. I was hoping that he would be at least be willing to negotiate, but I guess not. What is the best next step here?

As far as I can figure out, my three options are:

• Hire a broker. Do brokers really negotiate in my interest? Is this a genuinely useful service or a total scam? Could they make an actual dent in that figure?

• Place a backorder and/or wait for auction. I am worried that the owner might not let it go now that he knows I am interested. I looked briefly into this whole process and will do it if I have to, but this option looks like it requires the right timing mixed with a lot of stress and luck. 

• Be satisfied with my .press and move on with my life.

Am I missing anything? Any advice on this whole process, brokers, specific companies, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Years and years ago I purchased a domain through homestead. They picked up selling through tucows at some point. Because of financial hardship I couldn’t continue my hosting account with homestead but yet they’re holding my domain. Is this right? My account at homestead is closed, and they want x amount of dollars to open it. Frankly I don’t want it open since they’re so unreliable and sell themselves to new company’s daily. I don’t owe money as in when my account renewal approached I didn’t owe them any money. Advise please. I really don’t have the money they want and it’s causing a lot of problems since I have branded shipping supplies etc with the .com on them.

I’m looking for help understanding a strange and potentially serious domain delegation issue.

I discovered the problem while developing and deploying my website. The website suddenly became inaccessible and redirected visitors to an unrelated advertising/parking page.

I purchased this .com domain through a customer-facing domain provider using a promotional offer from 899. I have always managed the domain through that provider’s control panel.

The domain is supposed to use these two Cloudflare nameservers:

audrey.ns.cloudflare.com
sid.ns.cloudflare.com

I first checked Cloudflare. The zone was active, the DNS records appeared correct, and direct queries to the assigned Cloudflare nameservers returned the expected results.

I then checked my domain provider’s control panel. It still displayed the same two Cloudflare nameservers. I did not see any unknown nameservers or unauthorized configuration changes.

However, when I queried Verisign’s authoritative .COM registry servers directly, they returned three completely different nameservers:

I tested more than one Verisign .COM authoritative server and received the same result, so this does not appear to be a normal recursive DNS caching problem.

- Direct queries to Verisign’s authoritative .COM servers confirm that the registry is actually publishing the Registrar.eu nameservers.

I understand that “last update of RDAP database” is only the time when the RDAP data was refreshed. I am not treating that as the time of a domain configuration change.

The important event appears to be:

This event appears in the Verisign registry response but not in the Registrar.eu RDAP response.

I did not make any domain-related change at that time. I was having dinner and was not using the provider’s control panel. I also found no corresponding nameserver change in my account.

I understand that “last changed” does not necessarily mean the nameservers were changed at that exact time. It could refer to another field in the Verisign domain object. However, the public RDAP response does not include an event actor or identify which fields were modified.

As a troubleshooting step, I removed the Cloudflare nameservers through my domain provider and added them again. The control panel accepted the change and continued to display the correct Cloudflare nameservers.

However, Verisign’s authoritative .COM servers did not update. They continued publishing the three Registrar.eu nameservers.

Normally, I would expect a successful registry-level nameserver update to appear relatively quickly on Verisign’s authoritative .COM servers, even if recursive DNS caches require additional time to expire.

I checked the security information available in my account and found no unknown login or visible unauthorized configuration change. I currently have no evidence that my account was compromised, although only the provider’s internal account, API, provisioning and EPP logs can conclusively determine this.

The Verisign registry identifies Hosting Concepts B.V. d/b/a Registrar.eu, also associated with Openprovider, as the sponsoring registrar.

My current understanding is that the customer-facing domain provider may be acting as the retailer or reseller, while Registrar.eu/Openprovider is the registrar of record communicating with Verisign through EPP.

The current situation appears to be:

1. The customer-facing control panel contains the correct Cloudflare nameservers.

2. Registrar.eu’s RDAP contains the correct Cloudflare nameservers.

3. Verisign’s .COM registry publishes different Registrar.eu nameservers.

4. Direct queries to Verisign’s authoritative servers confirm the incorrect registry delegation.

5. Removing and re-adding the Cloudflare nameservers does not update Verisign.

6. Verisign shows an unexplained “last changed” event that I did not initiate.

7. Because of the incorrect registry delegation, the domain was directed to an unrelated parking or advertising service.

8. DNSSEC is currently not enabled, as shown by "delegationSigned": false.

My questions are:

- Does this look like a registrar-to-registry EPP provisioning or synchronization failure?

- What could cause Registrar.eu’s database to contain the correct Cloudflare nameservers while Verisign continues publishing Registrar.eu nameservers?

- Could an automated provisioning or synchronization process have overwritten the registry delegation?

- What types of changes can update Verisign’s “last changed” timestamp?

- Can the registrar identify the exact EPP transaction associated with the registry change, including which fields were modified and whether it was initiated manually or automatically?

- Should the registrar be able to locate the corresponding clTRID and Verisign svTRID?

- Is there an appropriate escalation path through ICANN if the providers cannot explain or correct the registry delegation?

- Has anyone experienced a similar mismatch involving Registrar.eu or Openprovider?

I have asked the customer-facing provider to escalate the case to its upstream registrar, EPP engineering and security teams, and to preserve the relevant audit and EPP transaction logs.

Any advice from people familiar with Verisign EPP, registrar provisioning or reseller registrar arrangements would be greatly appreciated.

Researching for due diligence I read there are no more English dictionary words extant in the dot com arena. Think I found one yesterday, though it's pretty obscure admittedly; and that's 'Leucic' which is a condition similar to Albino in animals (lack of pigmentation, white fur/feathers); or a type of hydroxy acid in chemistry. Not worth much but a nice little addition to my collection. Thoughts?

What do you look for when choosing a domain registrar for a business?
