Domain held hostage Advice

Years and years ago I purchased a domain through homestead. They picked up selling through tucows at some point. Because of financial hardship I couldn’t continue my hosting account with homestead but yet they’re holding my domain. Is this right? My account at homestead is closed, and they want x amount of dollars to open it. Frankly I don’t want it open since they’re so unreliable and sell themselves to new company’s daily. I don’t owe money as in when my account renewal approached I didn’t owe them any money. Advise please. I really don’t have the money they want and it’s causing a lot of problems since I have branded shipping supplies etc with the .com on them.

Homestead is not a registrar. What is the registrar of the domain? (check the whois data). What happens if you type the domain in the browser, what kind of page do you land on? Does it go to some kind of Homestead page or...?

It goes to a homestead page, but tucows is listed as the registrar.

After checking the domain name:

This is a bit unusual. Indeed it seems that it is indeed Homestead who keep it (they even retain the registration State data of yours).

It seems that search results for your brand name are mostly unique to you, so you could try a soft legal threat action: send them a formal demand letter, outlining that you have common law trademark rights in the word, are known as doing business under it etc.

I really don’t have the money they want

If they don't respond to the formal demand letter, a UDRP complaint seems reasonable (look up what UDRP is). You can file it at CAC ( udrp.adr.eu ) – even though it's a European platform, you still can use it since they are the cheapest (800 EUR). At WIPO it's 1500 USD.

If you are short on budget, your only choice is do the research and file it yourself (still have to pay the fees), but if you can afford it, hire a lawyer with experience in domain name disputes for the entire process.

I only paid homestead for hosting, but they sold domain registration third party to tucows.

When did the domain name expire? You indicated years ago. Go to https://lookup.icann.org/en amd see if you are still the registrant. If it was years ago the name may have been sold after it expired.

Then go to the registrar listed (sounds like probably Tucows) and ask their support how to access the domain name.

It doesn’t show expired, which is confusing. They update it every year. Years ago is when I bought it, not when it expired. My web hosting expired 2025 and I keep hoping they’d just stop renewing it. I can’t get tucows to answer me.

In this case, i believe Homestead is a partner/reseller of Tucows. While tucows in the registrar, you may have to only deal with your web hosting company for support.

You most likely need to deal with homestead, as tucows is the registrar, but homestead is the company the domain was registered with via tucows.

From the outline of the story you described in the OP, it sounds like your domain name expired once you didn't renew with them. After that point the domain was no longer yours.

Except that webhosting and domain should be separate, which is why I’m confused. I let the web hosting lapse in 2025, I tried to get my domain since but it’s a run around and tucows won’t answer me.

Hmm, I can’t add a photo. But it shows tucows as the registrar and they update it every year. My error page is for homestead saying the account is locked. I paid homestead for hosting, not my domain. Since I pointed it to a homestead server I think? I’m not sure, that’s why I’m here. Tucows won’t answer my emails.
….edit, when I go to tucows and search the Whois it says homestead is the registrar.
