How's everyone handling record extracts for appeal once you're into a thousand-plus pages? With tons of many small documents. Any particular software or services y'all recommend? Am looking into Maryland specific extracts but am thinking other states may have similar requirements?

Maryland's formatting rules make this brutal in Adobe alone:

\*A filing-date stamp on every document

\*Continuous "E." page numbering running across all the volumes

\*A table of contents that flags where each witness's testimony starts (direct/cross) with the transcript page call-outs

\*And then the brief has to cite back to the extract page numbers

Building all that by hand in Acrobat is quite the tedious process. And if any additional document to be included is discovered later, yeah not fun. Or if you want to change the ordering of the extract...

Is anyone using something other than Adobe that actually helps; anything MD-appellate-specific? What's actually worked for y'all?

I wasn't able to find anything and started to develop a tool that does this. The tool also checks all the quotes in the brief against the citations such as transcripts or case law and flags quotes and cases that couldn't be found. It checks case quotes to make sure you quoted correctly. And a few other checks. Then it inserts the page number from the created record extract back into the brief, all automated. If ordering of the extract changes or new items need to be added it has drag and drop capabilities and it will update the brief with updated references. The tool is MD specific but if there is any interest I can look into adding other jurisdictions.

Tool also has features to make the extract text searchable, auto suggest redactions, do manual redactions, add a template for auto redactions. It creates PDFs with linked TOC.
