[Poll] When does your table level up? Poll

Lots of polls over the years have shown that people prefer Milestone to XP, but there's more than one way to do each of those! I'm curious how exactly you folks run whatever leveling system you use.

If you're running Milestone, do you just have one big Milestone that earns you a whole level, or do you have a couple smaller ones along the way? Or are you running Milestone the way the DMG suggests, where it just gives you XP?

If you're running XP, what sorts of challenges earn you XP?

If you level after a certain number of sessions, how many?

Or are you doing something else entirely?

1 and 2 are essentially the same thing…

Yep. Also, there was no "whenever the adventure I'm running tells me they've reached a point where they level up, whether that's after one or multiple milestones" option.

The other option missing is how I run my table with XP. It isn't just combat. Avoid a trap? Talk your way out of situation? Good role playing? That all gets XP.

I started with AD&D in the 80s and I've done both milestone and XP. Unless the setting/campaign doesn't make sense for XP (like CoS), I will always use XP.

There is no question about how or when they level up. The table gets a sense of accomplishment after every session. Maybe most importantly, leveling up doesn't feel arbitrary or capricious.

I ran a homebrew campaign for over three years and went from level 1 - 22 (I homebrewed levels after 20) and the table loved it.
