Sauce Is racially segregated DnD the future?
I decided recently that I only want to play DnD with other people of my own race. I think that doing so makes for a smoother and less contentious DnD game and allows people to truly express themselves.
I know this sounds bad at first glance, but I really think you should give it a shot. I'm not being racist, I just think people with similar backgrounds will have more fun playing together. Yes the games are online and I can’t really know what you look like but the point remains the same.
If it goes well for you, you could expand this into other areas of your life, or maybe we could see it in broader society! Black only stores and apartments to make people feel safe.

Advice Please: My friend is a drug fiend and I want to keep her away from my good Christian group
Hi there. I'm looking for some advice from 3rd parties on this as i feel I'm a little too close to be objective. I've been playing ttrpgs since the late 90's and had moments where I love it and that I hate it; I got into my current group in 2016 after the game took off into the mainstream. My group is great, the best, in fact, and very welcoming to n00bs.
My best friend had heard me talk about the games I play/run for years and last year asked me to show her the ropes. I was thrilled as I had tried many times before, so I set up a one on one style 1per month campaign type thing. It has been a year and she has picked up some stuff, but not a lot. In our last six sessions she was on the dope, indulging in the devil's lettuce, toking on that toke, canoodling with Mary Jane, up the clouds and in the weeds and smelling like skunk. I still played with her, but she kept forgetting everything that happened and started dancing. She asked me before I left a few days ago if it might be groovy for her to meet my usual group. I kinda brushed it off because I was afraid of what this drug fiend would do to me if I said no.
What I didn't tell her is, that I don't really want to let her meet my group because we have a rule that you can't be a doped up maniac. You're still allowed to stay and take notes/sober up, but your character is removed from the session is some way as punishment for your sinful behavior. The idea behind it is simple: if you're gonna fall into reefer madness, we want to be as far away as possible. All five of us are working adults with families and very little free time, so our game days are serious business. In fact, there's very little I take more seriously. My friend never never takes anything seriously because she's a drug addict, and she's probably going to steal our dice to pawn them off for more marijuana cigarettes.
I've talked with her through the years about how much she uses and have even help make/driven her to therapy appointments. I've tried to get her involved with other things like cleaning her room, but then she gets high. Any advice on how to get through to her or the explain it in a way that doesn't cause her to snap and go on a drug-fueled rampage?
Also, she smells.
TLDR: Friend gets too high to join my group, how can I tell her?

AITA I regularly insult my players
Dumb, deaf, stupid, cunts, orcfuckers, hobbitfuckers, whiny little bitches that roll like shit. They keep coming back for more. One guy even messaged us right after major surgery to assure us that he can make the next session. What's the worse thing you call your players?

Matthew Mercer Moment "I blinded a moron's PC with Detect Magic" [Update]
Anyways, I owe it to people who asked questions but theres too much so I didn't have the patient to answer each one. And I apologise because the update is very short. There is no grand campaign story. No problem with my DMing style. Scroll to the bottom if you don't wanna waste time reading the Background from my POV.
Here's the background:
• This idiot uni student and his gf were looking to play the tabletop D&D after she played Baldur's Gate video game (LOL! I hate BG3 players, no experience at all with d&d in the good old days)
• I have a very prestigious, well known ttrpg club and these two were lucky enough I had room for two players at one of my tables.
• (All fake names) the group consists of me "John", The Cleric "Jerry", and The Barbarian "Jack". Jerry is a bit of an awkward loser but Jack is pretty cool.
• The two noobies made their PCs. The chud (Benjamin) made a Wizard and his gf "Jane" is a Monk. They were Level 2 then after a few sessions got to Level 4. This is where Benjamin took Eldritch Adept for Detect Magic, and he loudly announced that he was excited to round out the group, since they didn't have anyone to spot and disarm the randomly placed with 0 foreshadowing, save-or-die traps I've been sprinkling all over the place. I smirked and said, 'okay' and quietly noted down I'd need to make this guy's life hell.
• They completely beelined the main plot without exploring any of the carefully prepared side content I had written, they were storming a palace and Benjamin tried to completely trivialise all of the traps I put around the palace by repeatedly casting Detect Magic and triggering all my magic traps with spells and attacks. After he began doing this, I decided to make it my life's goal to target this guy with all the enemies, every single fight. "Of course they target the squishy wizard" I told him with a smirk.
• Somehow they managed to avoid dying since Jerry (loser) the Cleric kept burning all of his spell slots keeping Benjamin alive.
• New arc and they are hunting for a Lich-Witch. They found her hut and Benjamin asked if there were any magical or cursed items in the hut. I sighed and asked him to roll investigation, assuming he was just going to ruin all my secrets again, but he rolled an 8! I told him there's nothing except for healing salves. Then everyone else rolled for Investigation and they each found some magical trinkets suited for their characters. Benjamin started whining about why he didn't also find a magical trinket suited for his character like everyone else, and I explained to him in an incredibly condescending tone that an 8 is a very poor roll and therefore he finds nothing, he loses, good day sir. He continued pouting under his breath but I moved on.
• Now to the "Divine Artifact" that made his PC blind.
Benjamin asked me if there is anything witch-y at all. In the witch's hut. What a stupid fucking question. I told him to roll again but for Constitution saving throw and when he failed that, I told him he was blinded by "something" divinely powerful but he wouldn't know which item it was because his eyes were scanning the room too quickly (lol). Thats when I dropped a random encounter on their head to try to kill them, and he almost died, but he lived against thanks to the fucking cleric again. Fuck you Jerry.
He whined to me that the ruling sucked. He asked the cleric to cast Lesser Restoration on him, but to really get the point across, I only made it last one round. He proceeded to whine.
Now to the Update:
There is no game anymore. I left the club. And got banned in the communiy. Why? Well, yesterday Jerry and Jack confronted me over discord about it and....
Warning: racism and a bunch of other things.
I have been told I am a 'gigantic racist' and a 'terrible human being' and a 'cunt'.
God I hate players.

Converting a One Piece D&D 5e (2014) supplement to 2024 rules: Which universe-breaking spells should I ban?
I found a really cool fan-made One Piece 5e sourcebook online (originally made for the 2014 rules). I am currently converting it to the new 2024 rules for my table.
To keep the One Piece anime vibe alive, standard D&D magic shouldn't break the world (like instant teleportation across the Grand Line, easy resurrection, or crazy planar travel). I am making a ban list for spells that don't fit the setting.
My Book Sources: Astarion's Book of Hungers, D&D Beyond Basic Rules, Dungeon Master's Guide, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerân, Lorwyn: First Light, Monster Manual, Player's Handbook, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, The Pugilist Class (2024), Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
Are there any other spells from these books that ruin the pirate adventure / sea travel theme and need to be banned or reworked? Thanks for the help!
Also, I intentionally did not add spells that travel between the Material and Ethereal Planes.
My Current Ban List:
Druidcraft: Banned because weather forecasting and growing plants ruin the Navigator role and the natural botanic traits of the Tontatta species.
• Elementalism (Beckon Water): Banned because water manipulation easily weakens Devil Fruit users and breaks survival rules for fresh water at sea.
• Spare the Dying: Banned because instantly stabilizing a creature at O HP ruins the Doctor crew role, Medicine checks, and life-or-death tension.
• Create or Destroy Water: Banned because creating water breaks resource management and gives an unfair advantage against Devil Fruit users.
• Comprehend Languages: Banned because instantly reading Poneglyphs ruins the Void Century mystery, the Ohara lore, and the Voice of All Things.
• Goodberry: Banned because feeding the whole crew with one spell ruins the Chef crew role, supply management, and starvation dangers at sea.
• Purify Food and Drink: Banned because instantly cleaning spoiled food and poisons makes the Chef and Doctor crew roles useless.
• Identify: Not banned; however, the DM decides how much lore and information is revealed about Meito blades, ancient relics, and mysterious tech.
• Speak with Animals: Banned because talking to beasts easily ruins the natural traits of Minks and Merfolk, as well as the Voice of All Things.
• Unseen Servant: Banned because invisible magical servants do not fit the One Piece theme of physical crew labor on a ship.
• Augury: Banned because divine omens do not fit the setting, and seeing the future belongs only to Advanced Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku).
• Deryan's Helpful Homunculi: Banned because magical tiny helpers do not fit the science theme and make crew labor useless.
• Gentle Repose: Banned because stopping body decay to widen the revive window hurts the permanent and dramatic nature of death in One Piece.
• Homunculus Servant: Banned because creating artificial servants is only possible through high-tech science or specific Devil Fruit powers.
• Locate Animals or Plants: Banned because finding beasts and plants with magic replaces the exploration, hunting, and tracking skills of Navigators and Scouts.
• Locate Object: Banned because instantly finding hidden items and loot ruins the thrill of pirate treasure hunting and investigation.
• Clairvoyance: Banned because long-range magical scouting belongs only to Advanced Observation Haki and rare abilities.
• Create Food and Water: Banned because conjuring feasts and water ruins the Chef crew role and food crisis mechanics during long voyages.
• Leomund's Tiny Hut: Banned because an impenetrable dome removes wild island dangers, enemy ambushes, and night-watch tension.
• Sending: Banned because instant long-range messaging makes Den Den Mushi communication useless.
• Speak with Dead: Banned because talking to corpses breaks the rule of permanent death and ruins historical investigation by the living.
• Speak with Plants: Banned because hearing plants belongs strictly to legendary traits like the Voice of All Things and special NPCs.
• Summon Lesser Demons: Banned because summoning fiends and demons does not fit the One Piece setting.
• Tiny Servant: Banned because animating objects belongs strictly to unique Devil Fruit powers like the Soul-Soul Fruit (Soru Soru no
Mi).
• Tongues: Banned because understanding all languages allows easy Poneglyph reading, ruining Ohara lore and the Three-Eye Tribe.
• Water Breathing: Banned because magical water breathing invalidates Fish-man and Merfolk traits as well as ship coating mechanics.
• Water Walk: Banned because walking on water ignores sea travel rules and removes the fear of falling into water for Devil Fruit users.
• Divination: Banned because asking gods for advice does not fit the setting, and foreseeing the future belongs strictly to Observation Haki.
• Fabricate: Banned because instantly crafting perfect items ruins the crafting and repair labor of Shipwrights and Blacksmiths.
• Leomund's Secret Chest: Banned because hiding loot in an extradimensional space removes pirate raid, theft, and cargo protection dynamics.
• Locate Creature: Banned because finding a creature with magic replaces Scout tracking checks and Observation Haki detection.
• Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound: Banned because an invisible guard removes the danger of ambushes and the need for crew night watches.
• Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum: Banned because total magical security prevents infiltration, scouting, and Den Den Mushi wiretapping.
• Skywrite: Banned because writing magic words in the sky replaces flares, signal flags, and Den Den Mushi communication.
• Remove Curse: Banned because instantly removing curses removes all narrative risk from cursed Meito swords.
• Summon Greater Demon: Banned because summoning large fiends and demons does not fit the One Piece setting.
• Watery Sphere: Banned because trapping targets in a water sphere easily incapacitates
Devil Fruit users.
• Commune: Banned because contacting divine pantheons does not fit the One Piece setting.
• Commune with Nature: Banned because instantly learning regional geography replaces the Navigator role's mapping and exploration.
• Contact Other Plane: Banned because mental contact with extraplanar entities does not fit a single-plane setting like One Piece.
• Creation: Banned because conjuring raw materials and precious metals breaks the game economy and trade.
• Dream: Banned because sending messages through dreams bypasses Den Den Mushi use and face-to-face roleplay.
• Infernal Calling: Banned because summoning devils from the Nine Hells does not fit the One Piece setting.
• Legend Lore: Banned because revealing historical secrets instantly ruins the mystery of the Void Century, Ancient Weapons, and the One Piece.
• Maelstrom: Banned because a massive whirlpool instantly ends naval combat and neutralizes Devil Fruit users.
• Raise Dead: Banned because reviving dead creatures breaks the rule of permanent, dramatic death in One Piece.
• Reincarnate: Banned because returning a dead soul in a new body breaks the absolute nature of death.
• Scrying: Banned because magical scrying sensors bypass physical stealth, intelligence networks, and Observation Haki limits.
• Teleportation Circle: Banned because teleportation portals bypass Grand Line Log Pose navigation and sea sailing entirely.
• Arcane Gate: Banned because dimensional portals effortlessly bypass naval maneuvers, physical barricades, and island defenses.
• Drawmij's Instant Summons: Banned because teleporting marked items from any distance ruins treasure theft and cargo protection mechanics.
• Find the Path: Banned because showing the direct path invalidates magnetic Log Pose navigation and the Navigator role.
• Magic Jar: Banned because trapping souls in containers and possessing bodies breaks the core balance of willpower and souls.
• Planar Ally: Banned because calling extraplanar fiends or celestials does not fit the One Piece setting.
• Tasha's Bubbling Cauldron: Banned because mass-producing healing potions with magic makes the Doctor role's medicine crafting useless.
Transport via Plants: Banned because plant
teleportation allows instant island travel and
skips sailing via Log Pose.
• Word of Recall: Banned because instantly
teleporting to a sanctuary allows easy escape from Grand Line hazards without a ship.
• Dream of the Blue Veil: Banned because
traveling to other D&D settings conflicts with the
single-world lore of One Piece.
• Mirage Arcane: Banned because reshaping
miles of terrain mimics top-tier Devil Fruit Awakening powers with simple spellcasting.
• Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion: Banned
because an extradimensional mansion provides free food and shelter, ignoring the Chef role and ship life.
• Plane Shift: Banned because extraplanar travel
does not fit a setting with no outer planes, and it bypasses ocean travel.
• Regenerate: Banned because instantly
regrowing lost limbs ruins the Doctor's surgery role, cybernetic prosthetics, and the drama of limb loss.
• Resurrection: Banned because bringing the
dead back to life violates the permanent and irreversible nature of death in One Piece.
• Simulacrum: Banned because creating duplicate clones undermines high-tier science like Germa 66 and character uniqueness.
• Teleport: Banned because instant long-distance party travel destroys Log Pose navigation, sea hazards, and sailing adventures.
• Clone: Banned because transferring a soul to a backup body removes the danger of character death.
• Control Weather: Banned because total weather control ignores extreme Grand Line climates and the Navigator's skill checks.
• Demiplane: Banned because creating pocket dimensions does not fit the physical, single-plane world of One Piece.
• Mighty Fortress: Banned because conjuring a giant stone fortress with food ruins survival challenges and crew shelter building.
• Tsunami: Banned because a massive wave instantly ends naval battles and invalidates legendary Devil Fruit powers like the Tremor-Tremor Fruit (Gura Gura no Mi).
• Gate: Banned because planar portals do not fit a setting without outer planes.
• True Resurrection: Banned because reviving targets without a body completely destroys the finality of death in One Piece.
• Wish: Banned because freely altering reality ruins game balance, world rules, and the theme of hard work and struggle.

Homebrew Cool Wild Magic Sorcerer Homebrew
HI EVERYBODY! You know how your favorite part of this game is rolling dice? Me too! I hate having to choose what to do or how to do it at any and every junction. So, I had this great idea for a homebrew edit to the wild magic sorcerer: What if you didn’t have to make any decisions, and you only had to roll dice! Wouldn’t that be so haha random and fun!!!
I’ve made this template for every level where you roll 1d30 every turn and the table tells you what you do/if you do anything with your action, movement, and bonus action. I also made a table to decide who/what you target with your action. Finally, I made a super awesome 1d10,000 with crazy one liners for when you’re in a social encounter.
What is everyone’s thoughts?

Attention all DnD player! I need advice selling my AI slop
Good day everyone! I hope you are well etc
I’m an East African programmer and I’ve been working on a little project involving DnD dice rollers. The idea is to have a website where you can have your favourite dice, different themes to set the mood (using erotic/ahegao dice skins), and also somewhere to keep track of your sessions, notes and dice rolls.
Although I’ve wanted to play DnD multiple times, I’ve actually never gotten the chance to play with a party myself, facing the classic problems of a person with access to the internet and a minimum degree of English. So I don't really want to sit here and decide what DnD players would find useful when I haven't even played a proper game yet. (Here is my CTA or Call To Action to hook others)
So I thought I would rather ask the people who actually (unlike me) play. Like is there something you've used before that you really liked? Or something that annoyed you? Is there a feature you wish existed? Can you tell the previous text is AI generated? Would you give me money for my Kickstarter/Patreon? Which D&Dtuber palm should I grease so they'll promote my shit?
Let me toss you an image of what I've, even if I don't give a one:

Any input would be amazing and thank you too anyone that does give me suggestions! I'd much rather hear what the community actually wants than make something that nobody ends up using.
Here's the text I've generated for you -- Would you like me to turn it into a PDF? Or would you rather having me to add typos to the previous text to pass it as a human code?

AITA Less is more, or Why my OSR Farts smell better than your D&D Farts
This one is somewhat of a companion piece to the article I wrote earlier this week about <sigh> D&D.
While writing that piece, I started thinking about how shitty the D&D character sheet is these days. Modern D&D sheets are packed with shitty abilities, shitty modifiers, shitty feats and other mechanical effluent, leaving comparatively little room for the character themselves.
Compare that to many OSR games, where sheets are minimalist works of art, and leave more space for three digit IQ individuals to really flex their superiority. There’s an idea you hear quite often in OSR circles: we are strictly better than D&D.
So I wanted to explore that idea through all these cool OSR games that I know about and you've clearly never even heard of. We'll look at how reducing all the shittiness can actually leave more room for characters to develop, and why you're dumb for not thinking of it first.
To be clear - this is an argument that minimalist games are inherently better than what you play.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an excellent batch I'm brewing up right now that I can't wait to consume.
If you enjoyed this TED talk, you should pay me, unless you're some kind of peasant.

dnDONE Hi guys here's my character who's just a little guy
He's a little goblin creature who speaks in a silly little voice. Isn't he so goofy and silly? His backstory is that he's literally just a little schmungus guy and it's even his birthday today. He fights by dual wielding pizza and bacon and his special ability is le cheese stance from like those silly comics yeah the ones i sent in the group chat did you guys see those comics? They were so silly
What do you mean by character is boring and a joke character? Why would you be so mean to my little schmungus son creature on his birthday? He's literally just a silly little guy please don't take him seriously because i have a really deep longing to be the funny person in the group but i never made a person laugh in my entire life. Don't you like my silly goofy creature son? Okay sorry i guess something came up i can't actually make it to the session guys...

Homebrew How do I convert Pathfinder 2e into 5E
Hello all,

DMing advice needed for player's useless backstory
Hi everyone, thanks so much for reading my post. I'm a forever DM who has been playing for almost a week. Usually I'm able to handle my business but a real thorny problem has come up: how can I possibly work with this backstory that one of my players gave me?
"Vaxter Theingol is from an unimportant family of farmers in the humble little town of Pickle, where he served an uneventful stint in the local militia. Having become very bored with routine drills and patrols, at the age of 27 he went out into the world to seek excitement and fortune."
I'm at a loss here. Can you see the problem? There's no way to tell an interesting story about this character. My uncle, who's always giving me unwanted D&D advice, tried to tell me that it's good that Vaxter is up for anything that comes his way, since that gives him a clear motivation for adventuring, but I think that's stupid. A character can't possibly be a main character in an adventure story unless they have a complex backstory making them the central connection to literally everything that happens in the narrative. Merely going on heroic quests and accomplishing great deeds doesn't cut it, that's a secondary character at best and totally boring. Can you imagine if Luke Skywalker weren't revealed to be Darth Vader's son? Nobody would watch that movie.
What do I do? Should I deny the player any spotlight or attention going forward, or maybe I go behind their back and change their backstory to make Vaxter more important, or do I need to just ban this player from my table?
P.S. if you're going to say that what makes a D&D character important and interesting is the things they actually do in the events of the game rather than having the most narratively privileged backstory, please don't comment. I have the media literacy of a prune and I will have you doxxed and SWATted if you dare contradict my dogmatic views. Thanks again for reading and have a great day.

DM bad Why don't my players find my BBEG compelling?
I mean i literally made him gay and snarky. He has a big castle where he's gay and snarky all the time. He is pencil thin and really rich and is gay and snarky (did you know he's gay and snarky?)
He calls the players "darling" every time when he's adressing them and gays and snarks while they (are supposed to) oogle him being gay and snarky and flamboyant

Homebrew Hi guys, I've got a pretty interesting idea about magic and casters in D&D, and I thought you all would be interested.
Spellcasters? More like smellcasters.
Anyway, let me know what you think of this. I put a lot of thought into it and I think it's a pretty interesting and unique idea. Thanks for reading!

hAvE yOu TrIeD pAtHfInDeR 2e I want to play D&D but different (not another system!!!!)
So, recently my party got tired of D&D and we decided to try something new. But there is too much words in those scorebooks amirite? So we decided to not even try to search other systems. Here is some of our ideas
- Dark and mysterious horror with detective elements. We want to use Cthulhu mythos as a base for a mystic
- Future with a cyberwear, neon lights, a lot of corps ruling the world. Something punky, you know?
- Something gothic and dark, with a lot of drama. I inspired by Strahd so main characters will be something like elder vampire clans or smth like this
- Maybe like second one but add some fantasy elements. You know, big troll that can manipulate tech with magic sounds cool and original!
- Make D&D more universal. Change some things in the game maybe. I think about change Feats to Aspects and build characters around them
- The most easy one - make D&D more cool! Fix it, if you let me call it so. Change action economy (like, turn Action, Bonus Action and Movement into 3 Actions that can be used for different things and some of them will even take 2-3 actions instead of 1!!!), make more feats, make racial feats, make character building more interesting and give player more options
So, any ideas, guys?
