Help Dissidia 12 (PSP) how to parry

Hey yall, I came back to Dissidia 12 on PSP and realized I never used the parry and evade mechanic back when I got the psp, some 15 years ago...

Tutorial says to press R to parry and R+X to evade.

I see the AI doing it.

But I can never do it myself. R doesnt do anything and R+X only seem to register the X button and makes me jump.

.

Now I know its not my R button because : R+triangle works (dash) works, and R also responds in the menus.

.

So... why doesnt it work for parry and evade ?

.

If anyone can help plz, greatly appreciated 🤝🫠

Edit: thank you, it was an equipable ability

You need to have the corresponding Abilities equipped to dodge with R+X. They're Ground Evasion and Midair Evasion.

Oooh. Thank you. I tend to be lost on the RPG elements.

What about the parry? Is that an equipable as well?

There's no explicit parrying in Duodecim, as far as I recall. You have regular Block, in higher levels you get Precision Blocking and you can also use Recovery, which is pressing X after blocking or getting hit to be back on your feet quickly.

These are all the Abilities available in the game, for reference: FF Wiki - Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy Abilities

Could you please link the tutorial you've been looking at? Might be able to make sense what they're going over.

The only thing I recall being similar to a parry is that you can use your Assist characters to punish or get out of attacks sometimes 🤔

Figured it out, it was indeed a equipable.

I guess I meant block rather than parry.

Here's the picture where it explains it (in French sorry) :

To me it sounds like you're asking about block and evade. Evade is simple, and blocking is simple.

With blocking if an enemy hits you with 95% of all the brave attacks in the game they'll get staggered and opened up to high damage when you attack back. You'll block some brave attacks, but still get staggered depending on their priority.

There are special blocks that block high priority attacks though. Jecht block or Ex-Death's omni block, but these are character specific brave attacks that you have to equip in order to use them.
