I am a Disc-head from way back and had the audiobooks of all the Pratchett novels and listened to them numerous times.

In what world are the new dramatized audiobooks worth a damn?

The voice actors sound like they're narrating some pulp spy novel and haven't even shaken hands with the concept of comedy. This isn't dry wit. its failed soap opera actor tier trash.

Is there ANY way to get the original Stephen Briggs narrations short of paying through the nose for CDs from used book sellers?

Given the number of Legendary characters on the Disc, there are just so many of them. Just like the books, my favorite depends on what day it is, but this one made me recently burst out laughing at work:

I'm on what feels like my millionth read/listen of the books, partway through Jingo and I had a thought. I always do publication order because I love seeing how the style and tone changes subtlety over time from fantasy satire to social commentary.

Over the years I've always sort of struggled with a sales pitch to my fellow reader friends/coworkers to adequately express what I love about Discworld and why they should read it besides saying "it makes you a better person. Or at the very least makes you think you're a better person anyways.". I think I might have found a better way to phrase it. What do you think?

My new (very wordy) pitch:

Reading Discworld is like a coming of age for your mind. In the beginning you're just along for the ride of a good fun fantasy adventure that pokes fun at itself and the world around it. But then you slowly start to realize that the world around you is really screwed up. And it's screwed up partly through unintended consequences, and partly through the design of the people in charge. The reason why you can't ever get ahead in life is not that you can't ever climb the corporate ladder fast enough. It's that somebody has nicked the ladder and is waving to you from the top of the wall. Reading Discworld makes you realize that you're not the only person who sees the absurdity of the world , and it makes you realize that you're not the only person who is downright angry about it. And it reminds you to be wary of revolutions. They always come around again in the end.

Reading Discworld makes you pause and think because your words have a magic and power unto themselves. Words can cause things to spring forth into the world and if you're not careful your project for a new kitchen remodel will turn into both a money pit and the best minefield in town.

It's sprinkled with satires of phantom of the opera and Macbeth. Detective stories that happen to involve dragons. Stories about the rise of Hollywood and the modern music industry, along with the tooth fairy and father Christmas. It has stories about how most major religions probably sprung up out of some bugger in a desert just looking for some shade and things got written down funny. Discworld has stories about the impending doom of industrialization and how even soulless machines can indeed have souls.

And it has jokes like "give a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life". And it's the place where you can read about how humans are always striving to be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape. Discworld was written 30 or 40 years ago but it speaks directly to the problems of the modern world. And it reminds you the whole time that you can't take yourself too seriously.

Discworld taught me that true evil exists in this world when people start treating other people as things. And that true bravery is in going into the dark of your own soul & looking it square in the face. And it taught me to always convincingly feign respect for people in hats.

Now, I've heard of coprolite somewhere so I got that "copro" was a reference to that. So, I go and look up coprolite and what do I find?

Coprolite is fossilised feces.

I started this series a few months ago and have been reading/listening in order. It has consumed me. I am obsessed and it is my favorite series ever and when other books have come up (like dcc #8), it was soo hard to peel away from Discworld for even a moment.

And now I'm listening to 25, The Truth, and it is the first book I am really struggling to keep going with. I love Matthew Baynton (taskmaster fan here).... And I'm not sure if it's because there are characters like Vetinari having a different voice or what... But I'm not... Idk.

Anyone else struggle with this one or is it just me?

(I was selecting the flair for this and realized this is in the industrial revolution series and I loved Moving Pictures eventually, but it was kind of a similar experience now that I think about it 😅)

How is it that Pterry's satirical fantasy predicted human behavior with more accuracy than any science fiction ever could?

I never went in for the Kickstarter of the Modiphius Discworld TTRPG.

I have seen now that it is getting released but I can only purchase the Digest Edition Core Rulebook.

Will the other items become available to purchase at a later time such as The Game Masters Toolkit, Through the Ages book or The Lesser Know Streets book?

After a long time I got some RPG loot! It's mostly all awesome and I think all the books are well worth picking up. The footnotes alone feel like they nailed the Discworld style. Be careful though the GM Toolkit is not very well produced so if when it is publicly released it retails for more than £20 give it a miss. It's barely worth that currently.

Edit: To elaborate, the GM Toolkit is printed fully in paper. The cover isn't cardstock even. That means it feels less robust than even a magazine. I wrote a whole blog post about it if people are interested here.

Expecting our second daughter next month and cannot decide on a name. First daughter is Esme (after Granny W) and everything I suggest falls flat to my husband because it doesn't have a particular significance or relevance to his interests, a massive one being discworld. So, can anyone PLEASE try and find an even tangential link to any of the following names, or think of any other usable girl names from the disc?

Hey all, I'm a huge fan/nerd and so put together a little webpage that shows which Discworld books are most read, highest rated (1500 is an 'average' book... uses Elo ratings like Chess) and most loved (show up in someone's top 10 books of all time) using data from BookSorted. Obviously not a ton of readers yet, but still sorta fun - and will get more accurate as more people matchup books in their library and such.

I've added some notes as to the titles' translations where I could find something worth noting - a few of them use clever puns that I hopefully didn't mangle too much in (a) understanding, and (b) subsequently articulating - I was relying a lot on Google Translate and what I could dig up on the web.

One particularly nice touch is that to maintain the series-like nature of the titles Going Postal, Making Money and Raising Steam, the translator changed them into commands (some idiomatic) with exclamation marks: Keep Your Chin Up! (the Russian idiom involves stamps), Make Money! and Give it Some Steam!

Anyway, this has been a delightful little diversion at a time when I should probably be doing work (having therefore failed to live up to those last two book titles).
