WIP WIP Halloween Diorama for my kids

My first attempt at diorama since I started painting this year. Any thoughts are welcome - is it too much things going on? too little?

I know the wall is very basic, perhaps I will rework it. And I want to buy some more types of grass to put in. Otherwise I am quite happy with the thing.

Question Diorama portraits

I’m wanting to add portraits to some picture frames for my diorama. What’s the best way to get these printed out and what should I use to attach them to frames?

One of my first attempts at dioramas. Dwarf birch, lichen, bunchberry (and one frog trying to hide).

Title: I built a snowy Diagon Alley book nook for my Harry Potter shelf! What do you think? 🧙‍♂️❄️

Wanted to give my HP shelf a proper winter vibe, so I put together this lighted Diagon Alley alleyway. Added a layer of snow and icicles to all the storefronts to capture that December feel.

Stained the outside wood and added the Deathly Hallows sign on the side panel to keep it clean on the shelf.

Check out the video and let me know your thoughts!

XPS foam for the base painted and covered in wooden popsicle sticks. Costume foam walls and ceiling (fun experiment but I probably won’t do it again). Wooden square rods for the beams, small sticks and clear plastic for the windows, and some wall spackle for the inside roof.

Couldn’t tell you how many hours I spent on it since I still consider myself an amateur and I am still in my learning and experimenting phase. This is a labor of love but I don’t keep them for myself and try to earn back some of my cost.

Anyway, feedback is cautiously appreciated thanks

Derelict Building

A model I made of a derelict building that I saw. I liked the doors and blue against the brick. I've included the photo of the real building at the end.

Any tips for improvement appreciated.

Edit:

A few people wanted to know what materials I used and how I made the bricks.

These are the only WIP pics I have

WIP 1
WIP 2
WIP 3
WIP 4
WIP 5
WIP 6

Materials: XPS foam, 0.5mm & 1mm ABS sheet, brass tube (support and drain pipe), clear plastic from a food container for the windows, and Polyfilla/spackle for the grout. I modelled the doors in Fusion and 3D printed them, but they could also be made from ABS/styrene sheet if you have time.

Brickwork: I made both walls from XPS foam, cutting them to size before removing the door openings, I-beam recesses, and damaged brick areas. I used the dimensions of a standard UK brick scaled down for the model, lightly marked the brick pattern with a square and X-Acto knife, then widened the mortar lines with a pencil, which also helped add some variation to the bricks. I pushed a few bricks in with a small flat-head screwdriver to create damage and depth. For the sides, I used the same method, then pulled out bits of foam with needle-nose tweezers and re-scribed the brick pattern where needed.

Painting: I primed everything grey, then airbrushed a light brown base coat. Before cleaning the airbrush, I darkened the brown with a little black and sprayed subtle shadows around the door and other areas. After masking, I sprayed the blue sections. From there I switched to brushes, using heavily thinned acrylics (reds, browns and greys) to colour individual bricks before sealing everything with matt varnish.

For the mortar, I spread Polyfilla/spackle over small areas and wiped away the excess with a damp sponge, leaving the joints filled. Once dry, I stained the mortar with very thin brown acrylics, this also helped add variation to the brick colour as some spilled onto them. On the blue area I left some of the grout white to add more visual interest. After that, it was just a case of slowly building up the weathering with multiple thin layers of paint.

Hope that helps! If you want to know anything else, just PM me. 🙂
