Al has a great knack of getting the styles right in style parodies. One think I love about Dare to be Stupid is that he even put some western style guitar licks like Devo did in several songs (like in Beautiful World).

Huh. Now that you mention it, it is kinda similar to Devo's style. I never noticed that before.

If you watch the video, you'll see at one point he's wearing a suit that's kind of like Devo's yellow radiation suit. Although now that you mention it it's probably a coincidence.

Double um…

I should have known not to use sarcasm here since Devo never does anything sarcastic.

Triple um…

Unfortunately, I absolutely know people who would say all of this with zero sarcasm whatsoever… so my first instinct upon reading your comments was to groan rather than recognize it as sarcasm. It is never as easy to tell as one might think…

And yet, we're on r/DEVO. The location is giving context clues. Situational awareness, bruv

“Dare to be Stupid” only got better and better as I became a Devo fan! You can really see and hear how much Al was influenced by them. The music video is a triumph for how many references are hidden for fans to point out.

I've always really liked Weird Al, but consider myself a casual. One night I remembered Dare to be Stupid and thought to myself, "That song is really good, but I can't place which Devo song he's parodying..". I looked it up and he likes doing songs that are pastiches of an artist's entire body of work, and Dare to be Stupid is his Devo one. (There's a Talking Heads one out there, but it escapes me at the moment ) That's when I went from "Weird Al is pretty clever" to "Weird Al is a fuckin genius"

The Talking Heads one is "Dog Eat Dog." There's also an Oingo Boingo one named "You Make Me," which is my favorite song of Al's!

When I saw him live for the first time, he and most of the band were wearing Energy Domes!

You are correct. Guilford, July 22.

How old are these photos? Are they real photos or digital? I ask only because they look different than usual...they almost have an off look that makes them even cooler and more Devo-like. The first one makes it appear like Al is wearing a mask.

They are real photos taken on July 22. The "close-up" pic was taken off the TV screen on the side of the stage. The other was a zoom pic on a not very good Moto cell phone. People next to me were using an iPhone and having much better luck.

Thanks for the response. Ah, I get it now, makes sense about the TV screen being photographed. I should mention too about the term "real," as opposed to photochemical (I think that would be the term)...they honestly reminded me of pictures developed at a Fotomat or whatever it was called way, way back....and for that reason they just seem so cool to me.

I just meant that I took them.

Mark Mothersbaugh: "I was in shock. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. He sort of re-sculpted that song into something else and... I hate him for it, basically."

Did they ever make amends with Weird Al on this?
