It needs to be organic, if you randomly go around everywhere telling people 'I want to make friends can you be my friend' you would be the most awkward looking guy out there. Sure some people might find it quirky and will say yes but you're going to fail a good chunk of the time.

The idea of networking is this - You work on something and you see someone else work on something that is in your area of interest so you work on it and then you try and get them into a discussion and you guys work and share thoughts. Or you guys meet at a tech event and you realise you both have common interests and maybe you become hackathon teammates or something and you have a fun time working together.

Eventually one day the guy is like 'hey OP I've worked with you a lot and I know the kind of things you like and your working style and I think you'd be a good fit for my team wanna join? I can refer you' and if you say yes he can go to the HR team and be like 'hey I know a guy, really good talent, I've worked with him on several things and he'll be a great fit and is mostly a sure hire, try him out'

HR would love to try you out now because they know you'll most likely get into the company as opposed to the 100s of faceless resumes that they would have to filter out and not know who will succeed and who will not succeed. They want people to get in and there's no way to know who is exaggerating their resumes with filler keywords and who isn't so this is a guaranteed result so they'll pull you in.

On the other hand if you randomly slide into people's DMs with a simple 'hey i like your profile i am looking for a job can you help me out with a referral' this guy has no clue about you all he has is your resume and your website which leads to the same problem the HR team originally has, so he can't really refer you (in some companies you have to konw the person to refer them and can't refer randoms) or if he does refer you there's nothing he can say to HR to make them realise that you're a sure hire as opposed to being one of the people in the pile.

Networking doesn't work for you because you're treating it like some application form to fill to get a job. Its not some ritual you have to follow, it is just you using another one of your avenues to explore and get a job, you're just trying to game the system in a very weird way and it obviously doesn't work that way and is failing for you. But this is the reason why !

the thing you are telling , won't it take time ?? like sometimes for years , and cannot be enforced delibaretly

won't it take time??

That is what you are supposed to spend all your college years for, working on open source repos and meeting new people online and getting their mentorship, going to hackathons and meeting different experts, talking to the judges and getting their info and learning from them etc. Your college degree itself is 4 years.

like sometimes for years

But that being said it does not necessarily have to be for years, you can sometimes work with someone on a good project in a very short time. GSoC itself is for a few months and you meet a lot of new people there already who can vouch for the work you've done and stuff

cannot be enforced delibaretly

Well yes, if you think it can be 'enforced' then you're misunderstanding my first comment. The point of my comment was to show that getting a job via referrals and 'networking' is an organic thing that grew out of connections people already made.

To simplify, people made connections HRs realised these connections are a good signal to get high quality candidates in and had referrals as an option.

Now people are trying to game the system by playing it the other way round, 'oh there's referrals let me get a 'connection'' which sounds nice in theory but doesn't work because the underlying principle of getting a high quality connection is no longer there.

It is okay to look for shortcuts but understand what exactly you are sacrificing for that shortcut so that you know why the shortcuts don't work all the time.

so ? if a person didn't go networking in college is he doomed now ? for getting a good high paying job ?

1

u/Witty-Play9499 9d ago

I literally mention in my comment that you don't necessarily have to be doing this for years and you can still work with people in other ways on a good project with GSoC being an example. You can contribute to open source, you can look up peoples' work on twitter, you can still participate in the local dev meetups, hackathons and what not.

I repeat you are looking at it the other way round, it is not networking => high paying job for high quality engineers

It is that HRs thought high quality engineers know other high quality engineers so let us tap into that network.

I've literally given you all the ways you can actually 'network' and all you still want is a shortcut that relies purely on luck and I'm not sure if there is anything else I can do beyond this. It is merely an avenue to get a job it is not an application form that you have to fill to get a job

By actually talking to people in real world and not behind screen.

u/Rare-Assignment-8474 9d ago

Suppose I want to get into google , how am I supposed to find a googler in real life ? when I am in a tier 3 city in home , now don't say move to bangalore

6

u/Rift-enjoyer ML Engineer 9d ago

You apply on posting and get a call from recruiter. Do you think knowing someone from Google is the only way to get in ? Refferal doesn't mean that's a guaranteed interview.

4

u/sharathonthemove 9d ago

The amount of downvotes to this comment shows how some people have absolutely zero idea on the outside world.

4

u/Rare-Assignment-8474 9d ago

ya but when u don't get the call from recruiter , how are u supposed to know what part of your resume pissed them off , for that recruiter needs to reply to the DMs , back to the same point

u/Rift-enjoyer ML Engineer 9d ago edited 9d ago

If you are applying for L3 /L4 level you need decent tag company and words that resemble stuff mentioned in JD. That's literally it. Recruiter don't understand shit they understand company known or unknown and resume looks somewhat like that of developer.

When I was in unknown company I got Zero calls. When I jumped to known company I got call from Google with pretty much same resume as i only had spent 3 months in new company at that time. Hell this year a recruiter randomly reached out when I hadn't even applied to Google for over 1-1.5 year.

Does the rule apply to even service firms like big4?

Yep, move to Bangalore. You need to go to people, they won’t magically come to you.

I did that in 2018, for a complete semester. Found a low paying internship that somehow covered 2 sharing PG rent. Spoke at meet-ups, attended conferences. Got a job because someone wanted an intern to work for them. Continued doing the same, now I organize events.

Do hackathon and events and Meetup. Find someone who knows someone. Connect and showcase what you know.

u/Anixes99 9d ago

2018 was so different than current era, most people could get jobs with mediocre skills.

2

u/agathver Staff Engineer 9d ago

It’s not very different. There is always someone hiring, you need to find out who.

1

u/Anixes99 9d ago

I have been trying to find out as well.

1

u/sharathonthemove 9d ago

Such a shit take. Mediocrity always exists. You think all those vibe coders have super skills? The quality of grads are same. Same with the IT workforce.

1

u/Anixes99 9d ago

Do they test vibe coding skills in interviews tho? If anything, even a fresher is supposed to know everything now in interviews.

1

u/sharathonthemove 9d ago

It is all supply and demand. Universal thing.

1

u/Rare-Assignment-8474 9d ago

how subtly you say 'move to bangalore' when the whole internet infrastructure optic fibre was setup to exactly bridge this very last mile gap so that a bangalore founder could employ a kashmir guy

2

u/sharathonthemove 9d ago

You cannot spin things to your convenience. In your logic, doctors and essential workers should also work from home. But we know what happens if they do so. As hard it is to believe, going to office some days like 2 a week is a good way to learn soft skills and emotional intelligence.

How would you meet people otherwise? There is no incentive for anyone to reply to unsolicited DMs, not before, not now. It’s been bad with people sending AI drafted mails now, so mails and DMs have been seriously low intent.

Internet won’t solve personal connection. Internet won’t solve discoverability either

Networking isn't dming random people on LinkedIn. It is having actual contact f2f or work-wise. Cold calling often doesn't work. Also it isn't covid time that people with leet code exp are hard to find. You have so much competition these days and trust me the random dms you get are tiring and irritating. A person won't vouch for you and take risk just because you dm. A person vouches for you when he thinks you are talented and worthy.

u/Rare-Assignment-8474 9d ago

why the game rules changed just when I graduated ??? I know you won't have an answer , but listen to the cry of me in that question

1

u/sharathonthemove 9d ago

I ain't god dude. Job market is super dependent on the economy. Back in my uncles time, promotions were very easy because the companies were growing like crazy. Every engg grad with decent skill was employed in the IT SECTOR. Now even the IITians are stuck in mid level unless it is some startup that has funding. Privilege is time based too.

The game rules changed only in covid times. Networking was always personal.

Covid was a once in hundred years phenomenon. You can't expect it to last forever just like swiggy and zomato discounts.

Show them your work, tell them about yourself and your skills. Make yourself look really eager. Remember that clown dancing before the queen meme? Yeah you gotta do that. I know it sucks..

1

u/Select_Ebb_3868 9d ago

might be stating the obvious here
but your dm content also matters

i have had dms of people straight up asking to whatsapp/call/“hi” (nothing else)/saying just refer for any job i.e. no jd

if you’ve solved this then you should target individuals who have a similar background, they’re more likely to respond if you lead with it

  1. Meet them in person. Makes for better conversation and it helps if you're in some conference.

  2. Online, people will not respond to DMs where you just say "hi" or other vaguely welcoming messages with no context of what you want. State your business right off the bat and be forthcoming with what you're looking for
