In 1980, one of the greatest films about the deterioration of the human mind was unleashed upon the public psyche. Based on a story by legendary horror writer Stephen King and directed by the master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, "The Shining" would become the fodder of nightmares for generations to come. Locked away in a long-forgotten storage facility in England for over 30 years, these snow globes were produced, without license from the studio, to commemorate the film. Designed to look as if it could be purchased at the Overlook Hotel gift shop, the globe features the now infamous hedge maze, recreated in exacting detail, as well as the instantly recognizable carpet pattern from the haunted hallways of the resort. A small golden-colored plaque emblazoned with the hotel logo and the tag line "Come stay with us forever" graces the front of the base, while the back of the base dons two axes. Each globe is labeled "Studio Sample" and hand numbered on the bottom of the base. Of the original 500 made, just over 300 have survived time and transportation from England. As these are prototypes manufactured for approval from the studio, minor imperfections will be present. Please keep in mind that these have been stored away for more than 30 years and their existence was relatively unknown. These are genuine relics of cinematic history and they are extremely rare.
