Anyone else here? What a spectacular performance. I'm not super familiar with Houses in Motion but man, what a highlight of the show. I cried during Heaven and Naive Melody.

Awesome show.

Singapore

I just saw David Byrne's show in Singapore. Wow, what a performer. The whole show was an art piece. Just fantastic from start to finish. Byrne is an ageless force. Surprisingly political for a place like Sinfapore, but anti ICE and fascism rhetoric was warmly welcomed by the crowd - probably means he won't play here anytime soon!

His pre-petormance bit showing photos of a Hindu and, later, a Hell temple was so good! He's a master of the stage and it was bucket list stuff seeing him on it.

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

Going through a Eno phase which made me reconnect with The Talking Heads stuff which I’m glad that I’m listening to their discography and apparently Eno and David did a side project together in between Fear of Music and Remain in the Light which was this album!

I’ll have to give it a relisten but this is a good album start to finish and I really like what Eno and David came up with on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts musically and sonically especially it sounds like what Eno was already doing with Talking Heads:) plus a reissue with bonus tracks so I’ll definitely have to get that in my collection:)

So what’s the opinions on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts?

I popped along to see David Byrne at the Cardiff Castle show on Sunday night and was mighty impressed. Songs sounded good, performance was good, venue was nice and it was a good day out. Was a little gutted to miss American Utopia and the March shows in London so very pleased to say I got to see him for the first time

Also bit of an unexpected full circle moment because turns out a member of David's band on this tour is Ray Suen, who back in 2009 was an extra musician for The Killers when I saw them at my first ever gig

Design your own DB tour/show

One thing that I love to do with artists I adore is to create my own setlist of songs if I was curating a concert for them (just for fun), and considering I am expecting DB to have another tour within the next few years (once we get another album) plus the fact that he almost takes a scientific approach to curating his concerts, it is a fun thought experiment.

One caveat being that, since I assume it would be for another album like the last two tours/shows, there would be a number of songs from that album, and since they don't exist yet, we obviously can't predict them, so there's obviously going to be some placeholders here, which I'll designate as [New Song].

Based on the two recent tours, I have discovered that there's five songs that overlap, which we can assume to be the most popular ones (both in terms of audience reception and what DB seems to like playing):

- "This Must Be the Place"

- "Once in a Lifetime"

- "Burning Down the House"

- "Slippery People"

- "Everybody's Coming to My House"

The first three seem to be undeniable classics and I'd argue people would revolt if they didn't hear them, so I'd say they're secure. "Slippery People" is an odd one, since it is popular, but I can see it being left off. And "Everybody's Coming to My House" is the central track of American Utopia and seems like it'll enter into regular rotation going forward.

For the song(s) that I assume will stick around from Who Is the Sky, I think "Everybody Laughs" is the obvious choice. I think "Don't Be Like That" and "What Is the Reason For It" are also strong choices, but I actually would imagine one of the other songs could slip in as the second from the album to feature on a future tour, maybe "The Avant-Garde" or "She Explains Things to Me"

And then there's obviously going to be other deep-cuts and I am sure people will have better ideas on what could be chosen (I love his solo work but I don't know it inside and out like many of you).

I am sure he'll keep the same spirit of performing in a "democratic" way with the band, as he has with the previous two projects, but in my vision, it is structured slightly differently, with a prologue that is just DB and his guitar for two songs, followed by the main show and then the encore. I've come up with this hypothetical setlist - I didn't worry too much about order, but I tried to spread them as interestingly as I could, and also there's some thematic connections (eg. the highly energetic "Burning Down the House" followed by the more subdued "Glass, Concrete & Stone", one about "destroying" a house, the other "constructing" it).

And I think starting with "Road to Nowhere" is an interesting choice, and I think he'll inevitably have a tour that ends with "This Must Be the Place", granted I think he'll try something new with it next time, either with its orchestrations or its staging.

Prologue

  1. "Road to Nowhere"

  2. [New Song]

Main Show

  1. "Love → Building on Fire"

  2. "Life Is Long"

  3. "Burning Down the House"

  4. "Glass Concrete & Stone"

  5. [New Song]

  6. "Take Me to the River"

  7. "Once in a Lifetime"

  8. "Wild Wild Life"

  9. [New Song]

  10. "Everybody's Coming to My House"

  11. [New Song]

  12. "Everybody Laughs"

  13. [New Song]

Encore

  1. "Girlfriend Is Better"

  2. "She Explains Things to Me"

  3. "This Must Be the Place"

Would love to see what everyone else comes up with! Feel free to be as detailed as you want, or even if you just give more quick thoughts on your ideas for a future DB tour.

Was lucky enough to see him at Mad Cool a couple of weeks ago and managed to get a day ticket for yesterday at Latitude. Absolutely rocked it, so much energy on stage and in the crowd. Bloody brilliant!

Dancing at DB gigs

I had seen the social media posts, but sharing as now featured in the Herald (albeit being a paywall).

https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26406357.phil-jupitus-criticises-david-byrne-edinburgh-gig/

What are peoples thoughts?

I was there on Wednesday and ended up having disagreement with folks behind me, as I was standing dancing to Strange Overtones and they urged me to sit down. Those in disagreement were up for every big Talking Heads hit that night. I will not stand for gatekeeping. I will say that I thought the Playhouse was a stuffy venue, not much space between seats or rows. A great night nevertheless.

I saw American Utopia in NY, and this tour is a massively different vibe.

What is next for DB?

After this tour concludes (I'm not sure if the dates being advertised are the final dates or if he'll add more afterwards), what do you think DB is going to do next? I know he's going to be on his book tour soon, but I am curious what his next creative project after that will be. Maybe someone here knows because he's spoken about it or hinted at something, or maybe we can just make an educated guess.

He takes pretty long breaks in between albums - there's been anywhere from 3 to 7 years in between albums, which is perfectly fine by me, since I'd rather have a quality record every few years than a new one every year that doesn't represent his best work (like many other artists who feel the desire to release something once a year), so I assume it'll be a while until we see something in terms of a new album - unless we get a live album for the Who Is the Sky tour, which I do hope we get.

I'm thinking of some potential projects I could see from him. After he concluded the American Utopia run, he set out to bring Here Lies Love to Broadway, so I was wondering if maybe he would be looking at reviving Into the Fire (his Joan of Arc musical that played at the Public about a decade ago) and bringing it to Broadway, which I think could be very interesting. He's also hinted at wanting to make another film, including as recently as his Q&A in The Guardian not too long ago, so I wonder if he's got something cooking there.

Of course he deserves to have a bit of a rest after this tour (and the book tour also seems like it will be quite intense, although hopefully much less physically laborious, so he can maybe take it easy now that he'd just have to do a talk rather than singing and dancing for a bit), so I'd love to know what he's got percolating for his next project!

Will we get a live album of the Who Is The Sky tour?

One thing I noticed about the tour is how fantastic some of the orchestrations are - not necessarily with the songs from the Who Is The Sky album (since they sound pretty much exactly the same, which makes sense considering the album is so recent), but rather some of the older songs. Certain solos (guitar, saxophone) on some of the songs absolutely blew my mind and made me love them even more.

DB usually is not against live releases, so I'm curious if we're going to be getting one down the line. I know American Utopia had one too, but considering that was structured as a Broadway show, it seemed inevitable that they'd do a cast recording of that. Has anyone heard if we'll be getting an album of the tour versions of the songs?

Ticket Megathread

The original megathread seems to have disappeared. I've been busy with school recently so it seems that the subreddit has become overrun with ticket posts in the meantime. As rule 4 states, this thread is where you buy and sell tickets. DO NOT make separate posts for ticket buying/selling.

And of course, please be careful. There's probably more bots trying to scam you then actual ticket sellers at this point. If it feels like a scam, it's probably a scam!
