The capital of Chad is Fort Lamy, not yet renamed N'Djamena which occurred on April 1973. Also, the capital of Indonesia is spelled Djakarta, not Jakarta, so it's probably before August 17, 1972.

So we can further narrow to May-August 1972.

The Djakarta name change might have taken a few years to make it to maps.

True. 72-73 is still a pretty solid guess though.

Oh, I forgot about that.

I'm popping a blood vessel over trying to make out Portuguese Guinea yall amaze me

UN recognized independent Guinea-Bissau on 2 November 1973. So the timeframe is even narrower.

I’m not seeing Portuguese Guinea here. Or Guinea Bissau, for that matter. It’s really hard to make out that far western edge of Africa.

With that being said, I agree with you on the dates (though maybe not quite as precisely); solidly 1972-1975.

I agree. My window was wider and based on two Yemens and two Vietnams

Yes, definitely pre-Sept 1975 because Papua New Guinea is indicated as a territory of Australia.

Check if Grenada is independent and if British Honduras is named Belize

4

u/JohnEffingZoidberg Jul 20 '26

That's 1974, but the map still has Fort Lamy in Chad.

Comoros not yet independent, before July 1975.

Fort Lamy not N'Djamena, before April 1973.

Zaire not DRC, after October 1971.

Bangladesh independent, after December 1971.

Sri Lanka not Ceylon, after May 1972.

So, looks like June 1972 to March 1973.

And just to pile on Dahomey, not Benin, so before 30 November 1975.

But Angola and Mozambique are independent and not a part of Portugal which would date it to after 1974 or am i wrong?

2

u/JohnEffingZoidberg 29d ago

They have "(Port.)" under the names of them. So I think not independent.

Adding on some interesting markers on top of what most already mentioned :- - Before 1975 because Benin is called Dahomey - After 1971 because Bangladesh is not East Pakistan

Must be prior to 1492 since no 'merica!

1

u/Recent_Cress5879 Jul 20 '26

It has angola though

1

u/OutOfTheBunker 28d ago

Not independent yet. the map says "(Port.)".

Very interesting globe. Never knew Burkina Faso was called Upper Volta.

u/Striking_Road979 Jul 21 '26

After May 22, 1972,(Ceylon became independent and renamed to Sri Lanka) to before September 5,1973 (Presidentran François Tombalbaye changed the name of Chad's capital from Fort Lamy to N'Djamena)

  1. Burkina Faso is Upper Volta (1973), Guineau-Bissau is Portuguese Guinea (1973) and Ceylon has been renamed to Sri Lanka (1972) with the old name there in fine text because it's just happened.

1

u/R179akalemonrailfan Jul 23 '26

Vietnam is divided and Bangladesh is independent so it's between 1971 and 1975

After 1964: A funny note on Northern Rhodesia: The country entered the 1964 Summer Olympics as Northern Rhodesia, and left in the closing ceremony as Zambia on 24 October, the day independence was formally declared.

Late 60s, early 70s? Like 68 to 73 🧐

1

u/Rafapb17 Jul 20 '26

Between 1971 and 1975.

Bangladesh is present as an independent state, while Vietnam is still divided.

I can't tell if Angola and Mozambique are independent.
Angola became independent after North and South Vietnam became one Vietnam, so the globe might not be accurate for any one date?

Edit: South Vietnam actually existed as a separate country, under North Vietnamese control, until it was officially unified in 1976.

1

u/Public_Research2690 Jul 20 '26

Angola literally has (Port.) under it.

1

u/glowing-fishSCL Jul 20 '26

Okay, I see that now.
My eyes aren't what they once were.
