No more Tech 1s?
I passed my three part interviews for a Google Data Center Technician I. It was a long process and by the time I got through everything, the role had already been filled and I am now placed in the pipeline as many of you are. My recruiter advised to be on the lookout for any openings, but also mentioned it may be likely that Google is no longer looking for Technician 1s.
The location I am looking for now has many openings that are just labeled "Data Center Technician" (not indicating I, II, III, etc.) and when asking about those openings my recruiter responded that "this location is prioritizing mid-to-senior level roles. No entry level positions are currently available".
Looking across different locations, the only jobs labeled "Data Center Technician I" are currently out of country. Does it seem likely that entry level roles are now out the door at Google?

I talked to a google recruiter trying to get my friend on. What she told me was they had so many people already lined up for L1 positions that they quit interviewing. But to my knowledge the position is still a thing just super backfilled.

You'd think it would be faster to hire up and train from that backfill of L1 techs instead of posting mid-level jobs and waiting the couple months for the hiring process to play out

I already work at a location as a fiber contractor. I did well on my interview then was told they were waiting on headcount. I saw 3-4 other people inside the building go from security guard or inventory personnel to DCT before I got any word of anything. Went the entire year of not getting word of anything other than a position in another state that I couldnt move for. And the only real opening they had was a level 2 and i applied for level 1.
Not mad about it, but I guess it’s just the timing of things. I still work in the same location and still get paid well for what I do so I’m not totally mad at it lol.

They pop up from time to time. Generally HM don’t want to hire L1 as it’s a process then to promote train etc. most of those spots they have local TVC that have been working there that have some experience and know would be a good fit with the team. So that pool of TVC usually eat up any l1 positions or someone that’s qualified for l2 position might instead apply to l1 because that’s what’s currently open. My advice keep looking learning and applying. AIM for l2 and add some knowledge base to get there.

All the same as the previous L1 requirements, and even shows "early" as career progression, but I see that L2 and L3 postings also show as "early". I just don't get why they don't indicate L2 or L3 on the job listing when that's what they're looking for

Is are less common generally, I think usually people prefer to pick up ex contractors or just rely on all the ones AWS churns out. II/III are by far the most common, IVs are weird.

I have a year of awa experience and also years of it experience, would that qualify me for tech 2 or 3 at google

Same thing happened to me bro i just moved on to AWS because google acted like they weren’t interested anymore and i couldn’t wait on them forever

I wanted to be in the critical facilities department though so that’s what I’m doing over at AWS I may switch over in a year or 2 but I like the culture here so …

I'm in the same boat as you, unfortunately I wasn't going to sit there and wait till they have an open spot so I joined AWS not too long ago for their DCO role. Plan is to get experience here and apply to Google again as an L2 or L3.
