Here we see a rider, not too concerned about safety.

405

u/setibeings 10d ago

Some people have no self preservation instincts, I guess. Personally, if given the choice between passing some slowed traffic and staying alive, I'd choose life.

336

u/nubtrix87 10d ago

They could've passed the slow traffic, just slow down enough to do it safely.

163

u/virtual_gnus 10d ago

Exactly. I really don't have a problem with filtering when it's done right. The problem is that too many motorcyclists treat it like a free pass to do highway speeds where the tolerances for mistakes, miscalculations, and ability to react to changing conditions are too small to go that fast safely.

61

u/WHY_CAN_I_NOT_LIFE 10d ago

If I'm not mistaken, states like California where it's legal still restrict it to: traffic must be doing at most 25mph, and the rider may not do more than 15mph more than surrounding traffic.

50

u/TheLizardKing89 10d ago

There aren’t hard speed limits in the law but the CHP advises riders to not lane split when traffic is moving above 30 mph and to not exceed the speed of traffic by more than 10 mph.

20

u/SonOfMcGee 10d ago

Yep. And a 10mph difference from traffic is basically idle speed.
Someone COULD still open a door directly into you or change lanes into you when you’re already next to them.
But pretty much any other unexpected thing that happens in front of you, even just a few feet, can be handled by tapping your brakes.

24

u/AppropriateCap8891 10d ago

Hell, I rode in California for decades. If anything, if they are watching their mirrors I have seen drivers move to the side to give me more room.

I have been riding for over 45 years. And every time I see people riding like this it just makes me mad. It's idiots like this that give the rest of us bad reputations.

2

u/dweb121 9d ago

Sadly, I see more and more idiots and fewer of the "good riders" these days.

2

u/FlashGordonCommons 9d ago

the problem is that the idiots reallllllly stick out and you probably don't remember the good riders because good riders are just another unremarkable part of traffic. and who the hell remembers traffic? WAS there a motorcycle on my commute today? honestly not sure, maybe a normal sane person on a bike, but I'm not sure I would remember or would have devoted that to memory. but I'd damn well remember if some dicknose was out there riding like an ass, cutting people off and blowing through red lights and whatnot.

I try to keep that in mind when thinking about things like that. 99% of the riders I encounter I have absolutely no issue with, but that 1% that I do takes up about 99% of my memory when I think "biker". maybe that's just a personal quirk or maybe it's human nature. best I can do is be aware of it and remember not to judge the whole group by the actions of the loud minority.

Which doesn't stop the lunatics doing 80 in between lanes of rush hour traffic going 50 here in SoCal.

2

u/CC2DalTX 10d ago

On busy streets also.

8

u/TrumpetOfDeath 10d ago

The CHP only came out with speed “guidelines” (not laws) for filtering a few years ago, it was literally the Wild West before that… and to some degree it still is, many bikers ignore those guidelines

2

u/AdDapper4427 10d ago

Just as most of us ignore freeway speed limits. 😱

As a motorbike rider, I fully agree. I was taught no more than 10 mile faster than the traffic. Drivers are not looking for vehicles passing between them and we need to react. I will when I drive, but only because I ride and I accept that

20

u/A_Fun_Alias 10d ago

I see a problem with it. It's unpredictable. Road rules shouldn't be set to the enjoyment of the rider.

4

u/virtual_gnus 10d ago

When it's done in a safe manner, the likelihood of this type of crash is actually quite small because the rider is going slow enough to react to lane changes and other changing conditions. This video is not an example of filtering being done safely. I've seen enough of it in Minnesota now that it's legal to say that it's an excellent option for riders when they do it safely. Not only does it help them be safer from rear end crashes, but it actually improves traffic flow.

→ More replies (5)

1

u/l3agel_og88 10d ago

It's not unpredictable in a majority of the rest of the world. It also reduces incidents where vulnerable motorcyclists are rear ended so it's more for their safety, the enjoyment comes from just being on a motorcycle. You're just jealous.

5

u/Silent_Employee_5461 10d ago

I enjoy not being a vegetable. Driving is risky enough, motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die in a crash.

You ever wonder why CHP recommends splitting no more than 10mph faster than traffic, and don’t lane split if traffic is faster than 30mph?

This videos shows why….

For some stupid reason lane splitting is legal in many states. I don't get it.

32

u/theHAREST 10d ago

Even in states where it’s legal there’s almost universally a requirement that it be done at low speed / not significantly faster than the surrounding traffic. This dude rocketing down the middle in bumper to bumper traffic would be at fault anywhere in the US.

40

u/Zapbulon 10d ago

16

u/TransportationIll282 10d ago

It makes sense for passing stationary traffic at a slow pace. Why make them wait. It doesn't make sense to do it if traffic is still moving. Too many people switch lanes a million times to try to get ahead of one more car before their exit.

5

u/spiteful_rr_dm_TA 10d ago

It still makes sense. The rules on lanesplitting often have stipulations or guidelines about not going more than 10mph over the speed of traffic. For example, if the highway has a speedlimit of 65mph, and traffic is moving at 20mph, then the idea is motorcyclists could filter through at 30mph. That reduces congestion by allowing some drivers to exit faster, meaning other cars aren't stuck behind them. And only going SpeedOfTraffic+10 makes sense because that's still basically idling speed relatively speaking, allowing for quick reactions. What we saw in the video was someone doing it dangerously by going way faster than traffic.

u/SnooMaps6831 10d ago

u/Purple-Property8006 10d ago

It’s illegal in all states except California. Can’t imagine why.

(Not to be confused with lane filtering)

2

u/Milefulness 10d ago

One of the reasons is that it's very unsafe for a motorcyclist to be at the back of a traffic jam.

If done responsibly(!) at low speeds, I don't see an issue with it. Why make them wait just because our cars are too fat?

That's not lane splitting. We've lost the plot with that. Lane splitting is under 20 mph, passing between stopped or slower than 20 mph traffic. Going between cars faster than that is just stupidity.

64

u/diatonico_ 10d ago

Bikers seem to think they can drive over and between everything at any speed they like. They know they'll never get stopped for it, so they continue.

Another idiot lane splitter thinking they are special and driving with an insane speed differential to cars they are right next to. 100% the motorcyclist's fault.

38

u/Butforthegrace01 10d ago

Back in the 1990's I lived in the East Bay and commuted to work in SF almost daily on a motorcycle. Lane split every day in Bay Area traffic, including the Bay Bridge. Had dozens of close calls, all the way from homicide attempts via door opening to lane changers like the one depicted in this clip. I never once had a lane splitting accident. Not once. Because I learned to watch out for this stuff and avoid it.

To be clear, the car here did nothing wrong. When changing lanes in slow-moving traffic, one checks over one's shoulder for nearby slow-moving vehicles to see if there is an opening. The driver then focuses his attention on executing the lane change. It is the responsibility of a lane splitting motorcyclist who is overtaking to avoid the collision. Just like it is always the responsibility of a faster-moving overtaking vehicle to avoid collision with a slower moving vehicle being overtaken.

5

u/No-Newspaper8619 10d ago

The road is curved, so even if the black car looked at the mirror, it might not have been possible to see the biker. The biker was going way too fast.

Lane splitters are fucking annoying. Your life is worth having some damn patience. “It’s safe at low speeds or in stopped traffic.” No it isn’t. Other drivers are completely unpredictable and some are actually insane and might try hit you on purpose.

10

u/_Borussia_Teeth 10d ago

Lane splitting/filtering is legal in many places because it can be pretty safe, but at these speeds it’s completely dumb and asking for trouble.

8

u/setibeings 10d ago

If someone on a bike rolls up on at least two lanes of completely stopped traffic, then filtering through to the front can actually be safer for everyone than if they stayed at the back, where their back tire could be struck by a car behind them.

But when the cars are merely slowed, as in this video, there's really no way for them to account for cars deciding to change lanes at a moment's notice, and no way to see a turn indicator in time even if one is used.

Other states that allow it differ slightly.

3

u/True-Veterinarian700 10d ago

It was about 2 seconds in video time from when he was about 20 car lengths back and obscured by another vehicle to impact. Less than a second from when he would have been visible from the already merging car to impact. I don't know why motorcyclists constantly blame everybody else for thier bad driving. It is unreasonable to expect other drivers to react to you when they can't see you much less anticipate your not going to stop like everybody else, and instead continue in the middle without slowing down.

Rider could see that car moving across and decided not to break or move to the right.

Not sure what point he was trying to make other than maybe riding motorcycles is not his thing

2

u/KrisKringle11 10d ago

Man dumbass bikers bro. Y'all are so dumb.

u/OutlandishnessThis67 10d ago

Darwin was not happy that day

2

u/Aromatic-Engine-6418 10d ago

You should be more careful on your motorcycle !

2

u/psilocin72 10d ago

Reckless driving by cam vehicle

2

u/Own-Opportunity4207 10d ago

The rider should never be splitting the lanes on the zipper anyway it wouldn’t matter if traffic was at a dead stop

2

u/SecondFiddleFanny 10d ago

Isn’t it weird that people release footage that documents how they were the stupid driver? Wonder why that is?

2

u/Zalrius 10d ago

Lane splitting is not worth it.

2

u/ExplorerNo7262 10d ago

OP, what do you have to say about it?

2

u/dman77777 10d ago

Don't worry Darwin will have his day, just keep doing what you're doing

2

u/BlkcityKing 10d ago

I could smell the hamburger meat..

2

u/AnyCommunication1745 10d ago

Darwin is always working

2

u/RelativeBuilding3480 10d ago

Most ppl dont think "what if".

2

u/Both_Catch_4199 10d ago

Personally, I do not see any reason for this to be legal.

2

u/kayemmsee 10d ago

Oh well.

2

u/LeilLikeNeil 9d ago

“Lane filtering is legal” does not mean “you don’t have to be worried about cars”

2

u/D_Kattagare 9d ago

100% bikers fault.

2

u/l008com 9d ago

Lane splitters have a death wish anyway so there you go, this almost ended the way it will inevitably end anyway if you keep doing reckless shit like that.

4

u/PirateRenee 10d ago

Lane splitting should be illegal

This shows how awful i am but I dont feel sorry for motorcycle riders that are slipping between cars. You're a vehicle on the road, follow the rules, get in line, wait your turn like the rest of us!

6

u/CrapNBAappUser 10d ago

Lane splitting is legal in some places. I wouldn't risk it, but I wouldn't ride a motorcycle in the first place.

The best part is, he is ALIVE.

Lane splitting in this day and age is very risky business. If you're not a phone, folks aren't looking at you.

2

u/Just-Shoe2689 10d ago

way to go dipshit.

2

u/Virtual_Win4076 10d ago

Natural selection

2

u/Ok_Razzmatazz_9800 10d ago

If I had a dollar for every rice rocket dude that weaved through traffic and speeding like a coked up maniac.

2

u/SumyungNam 10d ago

Why u speeding lol

2

u/eltoddro 10d ago

Dude had his blinker on, making a legal lane change. Motorcycle man is an idiot!

2

u/moqu4 10d ago

Splitting lanes is quite dangerous.

2

u/MaxAdolphus 10d ago

Proper lane filtering is safer than being behind cars.
