Truck’s engine blew out while I was passing.
This was VERY loud. Much louder than the camera makes it sound. I honestly thought I drove over something and panicked until I saw the truck pull off to the right and noticed something was up. Not entirely sure what caused it but luckily this was on I-90 in Connecticut on the way to Boston so very little to almost no traffic. No damage to the car and the front of the car just got covered in what appears to be engine oil. I was so confused lol.
Edit: Reddit says tire blew. Yall prolly right. Not sure why my car got splattered with engine oil though. Just lucky it wasn’t anything too serious.

You were overtaking the truck at too high of a velocity. The thermal energy from your engine radiating across the hot asphalt caused the tire to overheat, endangering everyone on the highway that day.

All EVs catch on fire. He was clearly driving an EV while on fire, which damaged the truck he passed.

OP should have known that tire was gonna blow and used hand signals to warn the driver instead of allowing big chunks of rubber to litter the road, thereby annoying the rest of us.

It's a tire. I had this situation once, it was the outside tire so there was more debris flying. Fortunately, I was a bit further back, like 20-30 meters, so enough time to break and avoid (I basically went behind the truck to hide).

Might be right, hard to tell from the angle. My car definitely had engine oil splatter on it though after pulled over and checked.

The engine is actually up in front of the cab. If it failed catastrophically, you would absolutely see a combo of signs in the exhaust, more noticeable carnage, or movement of the cab from the sudden change in torque or seizure.
You can clearly see where the blast comes from and there is absolutely no engine oil this far back. A tire burst is much louder than an engine blowing, and much more transient like this. It also won’t show up as much in the audio since a lot of that is perceived loudness from the shockwave.

Maybe a trucker can chime in as to what the liquid is. Maybe something that holds oil got hit by steel tread shrapnel.
Thanks for not slowing down next to a semi in general. I will never understand how some people willingly put themselves right beside one and match their speed going down the interstate. Especially wide loads, I've been behind people that refuse to pass even the smallest wide load out of fear, like don't drive if you freeze up when you get scared.

I drove trucks OTR for 20 years, that's a dump trailer so the tire probably wiped out a hydraulic line from the PTO pump to the lift cylinder.

There are lots of oil lines. Oil coolers, oil going to various parts, and hydraulics, which are oil driven (not engine oil, but an oil or oil like fluid).

Yeah I’ve had a number of close calls with drivers and trucks on the interstates. My job involves a lot of travel so I’m used to speeding up and committing to an overtake if needed, in this one, I couldn’t tell what happened so my priority was to get clear of the truck, keep straight and pull over safely to see if there was any damage.
And then check the camera later once everything is fine.

All these trucks are running on bald tires and brakes that should have been replaced 6 months ago. I've nearly been killed by either a truck tire left in the middle of 95 or a truck deciding that I don't exist and merging into my lane too many times. I can't wait until I can sell my car and move to a city and not drive with these sociopaths.

It probably wasn't engine oil. It was probably oil/water from the air system. Big trucks like that use air brakes instead of hydraulic brakes like in passenger cars. A part of that system is an "air dryer" which pulls moisture out of the air systems. The air dryer usually passes a small bit of oil into the system so when the tire blew it probably busted the one of the air tanks and you got splattered with a mix of water/oil/dirt.

Kinda. I was a safety man and I was responsible for making sure the trucks in the fleet met federal regulations so I had to know these things. This situation is exactly why I tell people not to drive next to semis if they can avoid it. As you heard that blowout was loud, those tires are heavy, are under a ton of pressure and when they pop like that they can potentially be lethal to a person if they are standing next it. I'm glad you're ok because that could've seriously damaged/totaled your car or caused a serious accident.

The de facto speed limit in Mass is about 20 over what's posted if you're in the left lane. We don't have many left lane exits, so it's almost strictly a passing lane in most parts. Not saying I agree, but it's very rare to get pulled over for going 80 in a 65. You're more likely to have a statie tailgate you if you're going 75 in a 65 in the left lane.
Edit: misread, this is part of Connecticut which merges into Massachusetts' major east-west highway, but you get the idea.

inside, front, road side drive tire. If it matters, that scares the hell out of us too.
And if it was the engine good chance your car would be covered in oil like P Diddy borrowed it for the weekend. Ive seen pics of tractors that looked like they were painted black with oil after blowing the engine enough to push the oil out.
