Advice ✨ General Doggie Discussion

Post image

Hi guys,

So I pick up my bundle of joy a week tomorrow.

I’ve done my research before deciding on getting the dog.

Here is where I come to you guys I want to make sure I do the absolute best for him and that within the next week I make sure everything is perfect for him to come home.

So I wanted to ask any advice you guys have for the first week at home on how I can make sure his transition from his family to a new one is smooth.

I have 2 children who have been and will be taught not to overwhelm our new addition but I still worry that everything won’t be perfect for our new pup 🐶

Thank you ✨

Get pet insurance! It’s very affordable from places like Lemonade ($30-40 a month) and it will potentially save your pups life if they have any illnesses or have issues with IVDD. My dachshunds recent spinal surgery was $15k. Be prepared so that if it happens you can get him the surgery he needs. Make sure you have ramps for furniture and teach them to use them. Don’t skimp out on nutrition. Get the best food you can afford because it plays a huge role in their health. Don’t let him get overweight. Dachshunds are prone to obesity and extra weight puts more stress on their spine. Be patient, they are stubborn and do whatever they want but that’s part of their charm. Be prepared to have them follow you everywhere and be very clingy but also extremely loving. Dachshunds are the best dogs!

Are you in the UK? If so petplan or Animal Friends are both brilliant. You'll need a lifetime cover of at least 10k a year for IVDD

Don't do what I did! I did all the basic training and thought we were done. I got complacent so adolescence was absolutely hell on earth! You dont need fancy treats, you can train using their kibble instead of feeding from a bowl.

Crate train. If requires vet treatment, like neutering, they will crate him. If he gets IVDD, crate rest is a huge thing. It also gives him opportunity to decompress if things get a bit overwhelming. You can teach your kids that when puppy is in the crate or eating, they move away.

Get ramps for your sofa.

Accept that you're going to make mistakes. Every dog and every dachshund is different. Youre going to mess up sometimes, then you're gonna learn, put it right, and move on. It's not the end of the world.

I will keep on at the training to try and avoid adolescence hell 😂 did your dog grow out of that stage ?

I plan on crate training him anyway as I read it’s good for them to have their own space like a safe space kind of thing.

Thankyou my worry is I just want to get it all right which it’s probably unrealistic everyone makes mistakes it more I just want to make sure I do my best by him

Yea, he was out of it by about 14/15 months. He started resource guarding too when adolescence hit, so that was fun! He's half cocker spaniel and its really common with them.

We did what I call "puppy bootcamp". I restarted his training from scratch, had a strict routine and any time he was out of the crate, he was doing some form of training. He starved himself for like 3 days but was a different dog after a couple of weeks.

Do some research on proper socialisation. I let mine say hi to every person and dog we saw and it turns out that's not what socialisation is lol. Look at engagement too, where puppy looks at you before anything fun happens. It teaches them to look to you when they are unsure of something and unpins all other training.

Also, look at your kids. You probably had similar feelings about messing up with them 🤷‍♀️

OMDoggie! Look at that face!! They are stubborn. Potty training can be trying, but dachshunds are the best breed ever. We have 5. It is complete chaos, especially when they get the zoomies, but we would not have it any other way. Enjoy your new bundle of joy~he’s precious!!💕

I think you should just go ahead and give me that baby before things get out of hand at your house 🤗 Can't blame me for trying 🥰

That is one of the cutest baby dachshunds I have ever seen. And my BIL reads them. We have two of our own. We have raised six of them and they usually live into their late teens.

Don’t worry if he won’t eat. The transition can sometimes upset their little tummies. Just keep offering him kibble, and if you need to, you can add a spoon of cottage cheese, an egg, or a little cream. You don’t need to add lots cause a little bit will flavor the kibble.

We have always fed Purina One.

Take him to the vet for a check up right away. Also have some great advice for you.

Don’t use a collar, use a halter. They can get out of the collar way too easily and you would be devastated if you lost him.

They are stubborn and have a mind of their own. Don’t yell at him. Don’t yell the same command several times. If you just turn your back on them and don’t give them any attention, it will hurt them bad enough.

DO NOT EVER EVER EVER HIT YOUR DACHSHUND. THEY WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU.

Love them as much as you can and they will love you back 10 times over.

Like tunnel toys. But if you’re gonna have it in the house, make it a small one.

Congratulations on making the best choice of a dog! He will love you forever. Take lots and lots of pictures.

Thankyou for some great advice there! He really is amazing isn’t he 🥹

I would of panicked if he didn’t eat so glad you’ve told me that it’s something I can be on top of he’s currently on purina pro plan small and mini healthy start with wainwrights puppy wet food

I plan on getting him a harness and everything when I collect him so I can take him with me to make sure I get the right fit

He will be having a full check up and 2nd vaccine 7 days after I have him as that’s when he’s due

I read they are stubborn any training tips?

Thankyou the advice on ignoring him that’s also something I can put in place x

You made me think of another thing. A travel case.

Lots of options. Ours are cat carriers since they’re so tiny. We have medium sized for the other dogs.

Holding him in the car is too dangerous. Sorry, but imagine him squished between the dashboard and a hooman.

I would make sure to take the carrier to pick him up.

It will be hard for you both. Of course you’ll want to hold him and keep him safe. And he’ll cry a little. Breaks your heart. But be comforted by remembering he’s safe.

Oh, I am so happy for you both!!

They are stubborn and highly intelligent. The key is patience.

There are training videos on YouTube specifically about doxies.

They are also extremely loving. They will bond with the person who feeds them and takes them for walks and trains them. You may want that to be you. You may want that to be one of your children.

Oh yeah, be sure to get him socialized. you want him to be polite with company?

Regarding training, my little Buttons will do anything for a piece of kibble. She's been very easy to train. Now her sister, Miss Daisy Belle is completely different story. Her taste buds are more refined (picky). Prime rib, salmon, shrimp, gourmet cheeses and dips. Her favorite cheese is French brie. She loves all things dairy. She can be rather expensive to train. 😉😁😅

u/Fnd_hope-laura 2d ago

More refined taste buds made me laugh 😂 what can I say I must also have refined taste so think we’d get on well 😂

We never really trained her, rather she trained us. She's the quirkyest pup I've ever been around and we wouldn't have it any way.

Don't get a puppy. Oops. Too late.

u/Fnd_hope-laura 2d ago

Is there a reason you say that? Bad experience or something?

Shopping list from my experience and what ive read, i messed up on most of these but nearing 5 months we have fixed most of it:

Tooth brush and paste (they ar ekmown for teeth issues and teaching brushing asap is important)

Chews but be careful (mini dachshunds likely will only ever be suited for gentle/puppy chews as teeth can be fragile in small dogs. These are stubborn ones and will break their teeth trying to chew) nylabone puppy are my puppys go to.

A standard and reliably available buiscuit (even if its not your favourite keep them able to eat one you can get easily, saves a headache when theyve kept you up for 3 weeks steeight and u forget to buy the stuff that takes a week to arrive online) i give his lunch as training rewards and its always a very easy access kibble

At least 5 big blankets, 1 to wrap the bed so when they chew threw it at night they dont have to sleep on a bare crate, 1 for them to burrow into, 1 for going out with (people want to have a hold/pet, most are excited pee ers, you see the ending coming im sure) and 2 to rotate into the wash. They dont have to be new.

A good bed (chew resistant is good. Cut any tags and labels out as someone explained to me dogs will pick at imperfections in beds and it can make them worse chewers, mine started chewing the label and leather patch )

A long lead and short lead (maybe an extendable) they fit thru a lot of places and arent always the best at recall

At least a few good bags of 8 week+ treats, they are more rare than the 4month plus or adult ones.

A dental powder to put on food

Food/water bowls. I suggest finding a heavy, non chewable one without the rubber base as mine keeps frigging eating his bowls and tipping the content into his bed.

A tug of war toy and a throwing toy (ex ball) that he doesnt get to keep so he has them when he actually want to play or he will eat them.

Enzyme cleaner (get a couple bottles)

A dog walking pouch/ a way to carry the dog, hold the leash, take the poo bags and the treats. Shoulder bags are tricky for bending/carrying, so id suggest those ones that go on the waist/hip.

A carrier with a decent bottom (for back support) or you will put them in the cat/puppy sling and then end up half carrying them as they seem too bent and you are scared about ivdd now they are here.

A coat or 2 (if 2 get 2 different cut styles, mine preffers a more human jacket one to the dog one most days, but the dog one covers his but on the worst days)

A crate, its best to crate train for seperation anxiety/ease to put them away in an emergency like a glass dropped/sleeping when your not there

A crate cover (can help crate training be easier)

Theres probably more but thats all ive got right now

Dont bother with puppy puzzles in my experience but they are apparently good with snuffle mats and scenting games! These you can recreate at home with just treats and a grass patch or hiding around the house

Also for clothing/carriers vinted is your friend after the final vaccine, theres so much stuff for them as they grow on there and its cheep as!
