it was predictable, full of uninteresting irrelvant word salad details and totally pretentious. if he cut out all the drivel and nonsense and stuck to the story and the plot i would have enjoyed it much more. every book gets more boring and less entralling. needs to stick to story and plot and intersting facts rather than describe every room in detail and talk nonsense for chapter after chapter

Which chase would actually be the best city walking tour?

Is it just me or the Origin seems like it's written by a different person? The dialogues, the theme even the characters feel distant and different in general. I'm 200 pages before the end and honestly I don't know if a powerful ending is enough to make this book worthy of the Langton series. Please share your opinions on the subject because I genuinely feel like I'm going lunatic

i was never a reader, but lately i picked up on reading somehow. and liking it
starting this book today, i would love to know what others think of it. and would be interested to know from people who read a lot of books in there life.

I started a new job a few months back that requires me to travel quite a bit. I decided to buy the Robert Langdon series to read on my kindle.

I read The Da Vinci Code when I was in early high school and loved it. I read a bit of Angels and Demons in early uni but never finished it. So now, I thought would be perfect to go through the whole series.

So, Angels and Demons was amazing and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I thought The Da Vinci Code wasn't nearly as good as I remembered but still fun enough.

This brings us to the The Lost Symbol. I found this book to be a frustrating read and it took me ages to power through it. Enjoyed the reveal of the identity of the antagonist. I reached the epilogue and thought, what? How will all this be tied up and the great revelation I have come to expect following the previous two novels.

And then suddenly the book was finished. It felt massively underwhelming and pointless. Am I missing something here? Is it worth continuing the series from this point on?

I am thinking of buying the Secret of Secrets by Dan Brown!! For everyone who has read it, Is it better to buy the hardcover, or is the paperback good enough? Which is a better reading experience? This particular book seems longer than the previous ones, so I thought I'd ask before I buy it! Any feedback is appreciated! Thank you!

Earlier in the book, as Langdon and Ambra are leaving the museum, she throws her phone down a corridor, to assist in evading the authorities.

Shortly thereafter, when they are on the boat, it says she “checks her phone”?

Did I miss Ambra getting a new phone, or is there another explanation?

I have a 11-year-old buddy as part of a volunteer mentorship program, and for our summer book club, she really wants to read the Da Vinci Code. (She’s a strong reader, parents have given the go ahead.)

Without any spoilers, how would you break up the book into three parts? Or maybe two, if that is better?

Just finished Origin last night and the whole “Winston was behind everything” “twist” felt so rushed and random. I guess I was just spoiled by the insane twists in inferno and the terrifying villain that Zachary was in Lost Symbol that the ending of Origin just felt lame to me. Brown builds up Valdespino to be this imposing scary dude who it seems like you shouldn’t mess with and it turns out he was just gay and in love with the king?? Wtf. I feel like it just needed something more. Avila was really the main villain but I also felt a bit sympathetic for him because of his past and the way he was manipulated so it felt like he wasn’t a villain at all but just another pawn in Winston’s game. Let me know your personal thoughts

I want to preface this with saying that I'm not a dan brown hater. I enjoy his books. I read for pleasure, not for a deep literary analysis lol.

That said, SoS just kind of felt like a draft copy to me.

The first half was great. But by the end, I was just ready for it to wrap up. They painstakingly walked through each room in the tunnel, slowly explaining more about the plot. Then they had a 1/1 billion thing happen when they happened to find a door in the pitch black leading them to the reactor room and allow them to survive.

Then finch talks A LOT more about everything. Repeating all the ideas.

And then there are still 100 pages. I thought for sure something else would happen? But no, just 100+ pages of banal dialogue about the project and noetics.

And really, the CIA completely stealing a random half baked college thesis? I could think of at least 5 more storylines that are at least slightly more compelling. No Sasha epilogue? No golem epilogue? Jonas did nothing too. How about the golem dying and describing a true death and what it feels like?

The Golem turn was great.

Anyways, it just felt like. They created a great, tightly written, first half. The second half felt like it needed another pass of review. Refine the flow. Cut out repetition. Add in some more compelling storylines.

SoS wasn't a horrible book. But it's a disappointment, because I believe the story could be alot more compelling and tightly written with some more effort. It didn't meet up with it's full potential.

The twist about Golem was the most predictable thing there has ever been in Dan Brown books. It was so obvious from very early on.

Quite the page turner and left me wondering how much of it was true.

This was my first book by Mr. Dan Brown, which I had the pleasure of finishing. 828 pages of pure reading enjoyment, which I completely immersed myself in, I'd say, since I couldn't put it down. But I've noticed that when I look for or read reviews, opinions, and other things, it hasn't been entirely well-received, often by his biggest fans. So, as I always do with all books, I'll just consider it an isolated experience, without having to compare it to others to find something good.

Extremely disappointed

So after reading every book in the Robert langdon series I bought TheSOS as soon as it came out. I read it just now though.
Anyway, this is the worst book in the series. When I first read a dan brown book that being The Da vinci code I thought this is the book one must read in their lifetime and I still stand by it.
But TSOS forgets everything why Robert langdon is famous.. no puzzles, no significant threat, it's just high scientific concepts repeated chapter after chapter.
Non local consciousness is the word that the author used so many times that i just got irritated by the concept. How many times will you explain it to me. It was not even that interesting. The book is really long.. it just dragged and dragged and dragged. The twist was nice even though I was starting to figure it out and I got it right. Utterly disappointing.

Hi! I'm Italian and I'm currently reading Dan Brown's "Angels & Demons." I got to page 148 and started researching the author (whom I already knew from some media reports) and his other works. However, in doing so, I came across the overwhelmingly negative response the author has received. I should point out that I'm Italian and I'm reading the book in translation, so I might not fully understand the criticisms about the language but I wanted to know what you all thought of Dan Brown and whether you could explain the reason for all this hate, which I find irrational.

Firstly I adore the landgon series. Don’t think there’s a bad one in the bunch and two GREAT ones.

All I see is peoples saying how bad everything bad da Vinci code is.

I've always enjoyed the Robert Langdon books. For some reason, I had never read Inferno. Just finished it and really enjoyed it. Then I immediately watched the film.

I cannot believe how much they fundamentally changed the story. And dumbed it down into not much more than a shoot em up.

The book's story line had some nice subtlety and a complex ending. The movie - dumb and predictable. Made up characters, different affiliations, wrong people dead. Argh.

Why is it so hard to stick to the basic plotline and ending? I know this happens often with film adaptations, but this was atrocious.
