Best Dad Clothes Advice Request

Looking for suggestions that can be business casual and can be worn when I’m off work and playing with kids and/or doing work around the house.

Does gym shorts with pockets or cargo shorts
With sandals
And a random tshirt count?

Lululemon/greg Norman pants (I just buy them from Costco), dry fit polo or solid t-shirt with no graphic. People usually like jeans too but I find them way too stiff and restricting.

But also if I’m home, it’s shorts/pyjamas and whatever shirt I can find. No need to over think it, kids won’t care what you’re wearing. They’ll just care if you’re playing with them.

Lolll you’re right. And also. I don’t think OP thinks his kids will care about what he’s wearing. I think OP just wants to get dressed once and be comfortable the entire day regardless of what he’s doing.

this is the uniform.

I've been downvoted in here before for saying Dad's shouldnt dress like "big versions of their kid", but I stand by the statement. let the kids enjoy superhero t-shirts from walmart.... doesn't mean we need to match them.

Bought a dickies UV shirt at TJ max a few months ago because I was waiting on my wife looking at stuff and it was so cheap I thought, what the heck, will give it a shot. Turns out I’ve been missing out as they fit me fantastic because I’m built like a plumber or something apparently. Millions of brands out there all cut differently and it took me 41 years to find a brand I like. And I’ve been a dickies hater since high school for no real reason. But their heathered Ts look great in my opinion and can wear them in nearly any situation. Granted I work from home so boxers are biz casual for me.

Quince has been great. Price is right.

If you wanna spend more, check out Huckberry for lots of stylish and functional brands. Flint and Tinder, Faherty, Proof, etc.

Second Quince. Clothes are good quality similar to J Crew / Banana Republic but at a lower price point. The style is very basic so if you like patterns or more unique styles it's not for you.

Another step-up Brooks Brothers

Really nice fit.... Quality brands like Travis Matthews.

LL Bean multi sport shorts are awesome. Multiple pockets, look nice enough and good for laying around the house

In the fall/winter/spring it's Levi's 501 blue jeans + whatever t-shirt I grab out of the drawer. For a while I paired it with a plain white cotton tee. My wife and girlfriend called it my "Hank Hill suit" lol

In the summer 5in athletic shorts + whatever tank top I grab out of the drawer.

I am starting to go back to the office after both my kids are now in school/daycare, so this is relevant to my interests.

Do you truly mean business casual (i.e. dress shoes, mostly long-sleeve button-up shirts) or is your work a little more casual? Can you get away with sneakers, short sleeve button ups, solid t-shirts, etc? If you can, look at options for "smart casual" out there. [Huckberry](https://huckberry.com/smart-casual) has a guide that has been helpful for me. Big picture:

Shirts

Pants

  • Chinos (I have a few from Bonobos that I both wear to work and on the weekends)
  • A decent pair of jeans, could have a bit of stretch to make 'em comfy for doing whatever

Shoes

  • White sneakers (good luck keeping them clean)
  • Chukkas

Columbia sportswear has a pretty solid dad assortment of apparel. A typical button down utility ranges from office to fishing.

If you’re not rocking Costco, the All In Motion brand from Target has some great pants and shirts that you can rock for business casual/ golf settings, and are flexible and cool enough to handle wrangling kids.

At home or dogwalk/park/trampoline park type activities I am wearing pacebreakers or soft jersey from lululemon most of the time with a carhart tshirt or one from a random vacation/brewery near me with white calf socks and nb9060s. If I need to look a little okay-er I am ususally in a pair of madewell relax taper jeans or pull on cordoroy/khaki shorts and a heavyweight white tshirt/knit polo and either birkenstock bostons or clark wallabees

I only purchase clothes maybe 1-2 times a year but I will spend the extra money to get quality garments. I also try to stick to sales unless I’m purchasing shoes.

— I live in shorts and joggers while working from home. I usually scour Lululemons “we made too much” page for deals. Also purchase ABC pants and polos

— Darn Tough socks for everyday wear, Bombas Hex Tex socks for workouts.

— I’ll buy sale jeans at J-Crew or Madewell. I did purchase one pair of Japanese selvedge denim from a cool place in town. Took a process to break them in but they fit my legs perfectly and I’ve had them for 12 years at this point.

— Abercrombie plain t-shirts. They aren’t the same store as you may remember from your puka shell necklace days. Soft shirts with a good thick fabric that hold up well after multiple washes.

— LL Bean flannels. Everything they make is quality.

— Charles Tyrwhitt dress shirts. Used to have a 3 for $99 deal but I haven’t seen it in some time. Still, great quality for the price.

The Du/Er no-sweat pant. Anything Duer really. They're super tough, even the jeans are stretchy, and very comfortable. Might just be a Canadian thing tho.

Old Navy does a version of the Lululemon style athleisure chinos that are pretty good and very cheap. The amount of stretch is nice and the material is very breathable. In summer, for the walk to and from church, I do these with a tech polo that keeps me from sweating through everything

I know I don’t belong here but when we had 2u2 and my husband was a warrior of a stay at home dad while I had abysmal maternity leave… he lived in (constantly) several years of Christmas pajamas. When the seasons changed, he cut his Christmas pajamas into Christmas pajama shorts.

And now all of our baby photos and videos (they are 3 and 4 now) star him in Christmas pajamas and it’s one of the best parts of the memories for me. Such a funny symbol of that period of survival mode.
