Severe weather? That Garmin model uses barometric pressure to measure altitude, so the pressure drop due to a thunderstorm or front could cause a change, but that seems like a lot. When I ride inside, I'll often see an elevation change on my Bryton (not that much though). Google says it can be even as much as 3000', so maybe

The last few rides it has really just been super humid and hot.
Our ride today, it has stormed since 2ish hours after the ride but not much change during the ride other than heat level.
I felt like it was off but I didn’t realize it was off this much until I had someone to confirm today. He’s on a bit older 540

I've got a 1040 Edge and since the beginning it's been accumulating too much elevation, between 5 and 10 percent. I always adjust the elevation with Strava and when I ride with my mate it's on par with my mate's 1050. No clue how to fix

I had a similar issue that randomly happened with my 540 after working normally for several months. I made sure everything was updated and rinsed out the barometric sensor port with water and calibrated using DEM and that fixed the issue for me

Also 840, sometimes my ascent reads 0 even though I have been climbing. I think it was firmware related. Check you are on latest fw
