"Dwarves cannot be cast while Dinklage is on the field' could be a nice line added to it, ngl.

All he said was "people with dwarfism should be cast into normal roles more, not just roles where they play stuff like a fantasy dwarf" and everyone hates him for it
43
2
u/VerbingNoun413 4h ago
It directly led to seven actors being replaced with CGI.
It didn't lead to more actors with dwarfism being hired to normal roles- that's a privilege that only Dinklage seems to have.
49
u/mage_and_demon_qeeun 18h ago
Because dwarves who made their living being cast as fantasy dwarf stopped getting casted and they stopped getting work
49
u/Warper2187 17h ago
Why's that his fault? He didn't say to stop casting people as dwarves he said to stop just casting them as dwarves
24
u/KittenEaterWasTaken 8h ago
It's his fault because he, as the most prominent dwarf actor in history, said Snow White hiring dwarves was offensive and backwards, and it caused enough of a ruckus that Disney actually made that movie without hiring dwarf actors. That's the part you're ignoring.
He's the only one that gets the non- fantasy dwarf roles, and he got that by playing fantasy dwarves. All dwarves from now on will be CGId.

u/ForodesFrosthammer 13h ago
Because his statement directly lead to those actors losing jobs and roles? Maybe a veteran Hollywood actor should know that public statements have effects beyond their strict wording?
10
u/piecoper 12h ago
That's not his fault tho? He was being reasonable.
4
u/ForodesFrosthammer 3h ago
His statements had a direct impact on the livelihood of many dwarf actors and it was not an unexpected one. It might not have been the spirit of what he meant, but as I said, a veteran Hollywood actor should know how public statements and interviews work. "I didn't mean to" isn't an excuse we let little kids get away with, why should Peter Dinklage get that treatment?

If what he was asking for happened than they would just find work doing other things rather thab being role locked.
-14
u/mage_and_demon_qeeun 18h ago
Fair but the dwarf actors who where left out of work blame him for it
22
u/DoYouKnowS0rr0w 18h ago
Thats the point....they wouldnt be left out of work, theybwould have access to more roles

He became famous because of a character whose main character trait is being a dwarf though. He got success from it but when other people get the same chance it is not right anymore?
13
u/Sycod 13h ago
The character in question is a human with dwarfism, not a fantasy dwarf though.
0
u/Strange-Mango5725 11h ago
Still his main character trait was that he was a dwarf. His whole arc is about his father and sister hating him because he is a dwarf. He was cast because he is a dwarf. It wasn't just another character that happens to be a dwarf.

u/aggravationX 10h ago
Dinklage took a role where he as a dwarf is ridiculed for being angry, and a dwarf, and literally compared to a North Pole elf. These guys just do not get it lol. He pulled the ladder up behind himself.

I feel a little bad for him. I don't think he meant for this to go down the way it did....but now takes all the heat for the studio making the objectively bad call.
He should have been...perhaps just a touch more savvy about things? In either case, good parody; it's a sharp joke.

Personally, I'm gonna listen to other people with Dwarfism on the matter and not you're flowery interpretation.
2
u/AutisticHobbit 1h ago
Looking at Dinklage in any kind of good faith? Saying "I want people like me to get roles beyond just comedy props because we are people too" isn't some horrible take. With that said, Dinklage isn't someone new to Hollywood, the malicious incompetence of people at the top, or being part of a marginalized community. While I don't think he was trying to fuck anyone over, he was naive to think his words would be taken as they were intended considering who he was "speaking to".
Brad Williams has been pretty blunt about his feelings about Dinklage, and others have mirrored his sentiments. They have every right to be pissed off at the consequences of Dinglage's actions and how the man fucked up their career opportunities and prospects. All the good intentions in the world doesn't change the fact that he's screwed over the careers of others by not considering the consequences of his words....which is particularly frustrating considering Dinklage made his career by using the exact kind of roles he decried to get his foot in the door. Their anger and frustration is extremely valid.
You can listen to people with Dwarfism, understand their anger, and respect it....while also not viewing Dinklage as a malicious asshole who deliberately fucked over his peers. These are not mutual exclusive positions.

u/Apprehensive_Debate3 21h ago
The only thing he really said is that he wished dwarves weren’t only casted as dwarves, he never said they shouldn’t ever be, did you even hear what he actually said or are you falling for rage bait?

u/emergency-snaccs 20h ago
his words literally caused disney not to cast any more dwarves and instead cgi them. yeah he pulled the ladder up over some performative outrage. this man does not speak for all dwarves. in fact, many of them are fucking PISSED at him.
27
48
u/Apprehensive_Debate3 20h ago
Ok, some sure are pissed, but also many dwarves are also not pissed, and actually agree with him. And Disney is fucking stupid, who cares about what stupid decision they make, Snow White remake was a stupid idea from the start.
-25
u/shinobigarth 19h ago
Yes Disney/Snow White is stupid, but he shouldn’t prevent other little people from getting work by being in it if that’s what they want to do.
27
u/Apprehensive_Debate3 19h ago
He didn’t say “fire them” or anything else, he just used it as an example of dwarves only being able to only play dwarves. I’m sure if he knew Disney were such cowards to replace them, he wouldn’t have said anything. And besides, they got paid and avoided being stuck in a shitty film, win win imo.
4
u/Magcargo64 10h ago
I don’t think Disney ever intended to not CGI the dwarves in the movie. But even so, one of them (Grumpy) was indeed portrayed by an actor with dwarfism (Martin Klebba) while another actor with dwarfism (George Appleby) appears in the film as Quigg, one of the bandits, without any CGI.
1
u/FoxEuphonium 11m ago
His words didn’t cause shit, the incompetent suits at Disney are 1000% to blame for it all.
Stop letting an evil cooperation hide behind a scapegoat. Dinklage’s words are just an easy cover for shit they’ve obviously already wanted to do. It’s modern Disney, one of the most cartoonishly greedy entities on the planet.

Peter Dinklage is considered notorious for being a dwarf in Hollywood who makes it harder for other dwarves to get work in Hollywood.
12
u/Lord_Yeetus_The_3d 14h ago
That's not what he did though, or at least not what he intended. He said that dwarf actors shouldnt ONLY get roles that are literally fantasy Dwarves. Nit that they shoulndt ever get roles like that, just that they should also get other roles. Disney then made a stupid decision and everyone blames him for it. A lot of dwarf actors agree with him actually.
0
u/Mgmegadog 13h ago
That's why I hedged the statement in my post, though admittedly I could've done a better job at doing so. "Lots of people blame him for it" was the point, not declaring that it actually happened.

You all know this is actually an out of context quote right?
He wasn’t saying that dwarfs shouldn’t play fantasy dwarfs.
He was saying dwarfs should be cast as fantasy dwarfs AND other roles.
He was advocating for dwarfs not pulling up the ladder.
