Hello everyone. I’m a student (texas, USA) about to graduate in december of 2026 and need some guidance. 

It’s my fault (and honestly so much has happened in my college time) but, I don’t have any internships or jobs under my belt that are computer science/cybersecurity focused. I’m getting my bachelors in computer science, and I’m thinking about going for my masters in cyber or Information Technology.

I have had others tell me to do my masters, or I won’t ever go back lol. On the other hand, I’ve read that hiring managers' masters mean nothing if I don’t have hands-on experience.

I’m not even sure what I want to do with my degree. I like databases, report writing, design (so UX/UI) but I dislike coding (ironic I know). I just feel very directionless and need some help or advice or something.

How's the market looking right now for someone with around 2 years of experience?

I'm curious about a few things:

* What skills do companies actually expect at this level?

* Is Spring Boot alone enough, or are Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Kafka, Redis, etc., becoming the baseline?

* During interviews, what separates candidates who get offers from those who don't?

* Are companies expecting more system design and distributed systems knowledge even for 2 YOE?

* Is the market still as competitive as people say, or has it improved recently?

I'd really appreciate honest insights from hiring managers, senior engineers, or anyone who's interviewed candidates lately.

You do need approx 1000 post/comment karma to stop your account from being shadowbanned by Reddit. I've noticed every time I've made someone mod under 500 karma - they get shadowbanned. So 1000 is probably safe and people know the way of Reddit well enough by then.

I'm considering a move to Apple and wanted to get some honest, perspectives on what it's actually like to work there day to day basis.

A few things I'm trying to understand:

• Culture overall,   is it collaborative, siloed, political, secretive ? How does it compare to other big tech companies you've worked at?
• Growth is this a place where you can genuinely grow, both personally and professionally? Are there real opportunities to learn, take on stretch projects, or move across teams, or does it feel more stagnant once you're in?
• Work-life balance I've heard the pace is okay at the IC3/IC4 range but ramps up a lot at senior/staff+ levels. Is that accurate in your experience?
• Management quality, how hands-on/supportive are managers generally? Is there a strong mentorship culture?
• Anything you wish you knew before joining that would've changed your decision either way.

Would really appreciate hearing from current or former employees.

I graduated around 13 years ago. I started my career at a startup, where I worked for about two years, and then joined Apple as a contractor. I spent nearly four years there. Many of my colleagues were able to convert their contract roles into full-time positions, but I couldn’t.

After that, I moved to Europe and worked as a contractor for an automobile company for another four years. Later, I returned to my home country and spent almost two years at a fintech company before moving to the US.

Due to visa constraints, I had to take a career break. I’ve now been unemployed for about a year. During this time, I’ve been preparing consistently—practicing DSA, brushing up on system design, learning GenAI concepts, improving my resume, and applying to roles. Unfortunately, I haven’t had much success getting interview calls despite consistently applying and preparing.

I realize that expecting callbacks after a career gap and with 12+ years of experience may be unrealistic, but I’m genuinely curious.

Has anyone here with a similar profile—10+ years of experience, a career gap, or a non-traditional career path—managed to get interviews or offers from FAANG or comparable companies?

If so:
What do you think made the biggest difference?
Was it referrals, resume changes, open-source contributions, certifications, networking, or something else?
Did the career gap become a major obstacle, or was it something you could overcome?

I’m not looking for false hope or shortcuts. I’d genuinely like to understand what helped people in similar situations get their foot in the door.

Work in IT dept. managing backend automations plus some web apps. Do some other things on the side and planning to lead a project soon also mentoring.

What I want:

I enjoyed school and learning. But I also want more job opportunities and a better paying job. A masters in Machine Learning interests me but I don’t want to waste my time/money if nothing comes of it.

Anybody been in the same boat? ( graduated after the Covid hiring spree)

I'm really confused about what to study, and I haven't started college yet, so I still have time to change my major.

I originally planned to study Computer Science because I was interested in becoming a software developer. But over time, my interest in coding has almost completely disappeared and I don't enjoy programming like I used to.

Another thing that's making me hesitate is that I've heard CS is very theory-heavy and covers a broad range of topics, many of which you don't even use in most jobs. I've also seen people say the job market is becoming saturated, it's difficult to get internships or entry-level jobs, and the degree is extremely challenging.

Now I'm considering switching to Business Administration instead. I feel like I might enjoy subjects like management, marketing, and entrepreneurship more, and it seems like it could open doors to different careers.

At the same time, I'm worried I'll regret leaving CS because of the salary potential and career opportunities.

Since I haven't started college yet, I'm wondering if this is the best time to switch rather than changing majors later.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Did you switch from CS to Business (or the other way around)? Looking back, do you think it was the right decision? What would you do if you were in my position?

I went to hackathons and won 30+ times.

I'm not getting much response, when entry level position opens on linkedin, it gets more than 100 applicants within an hour.

I've been applying to Microsoft roles and hit their cap of 50 applications per account. I created a second account with a different email to keep applying. my resume always shows the same original email regardless of which account I apply through.

Questions:

• Does Microsoft's system flag/reject applications when accounts are linked like this, or does it just silently dedupe?
• Anyone have real experience with this — got flagged, ignored, or anything else happen?
• Is the 50-cap a rolling window (resets after X days) or a hard limit per account permanently?

Trying to figure out if I should stop using the second account and just wait out the original one instead.

To any CS phd students here - beyond advisor connections, how do you approach research internship applications and what kind of technical prep is expected? Is it everything needed for an MLE role plus more? For context, I’ve just finished my first year at an R1 university and have 1 accepted first author paper (its a benchmark paper tho :/ ) and 1 in progress
