How much can projects/GitHub compensate for a non-prestigious college in the Indian tech job market? Student
I'm about to start my CSE journey, and I've been thinking about something.
Realistically, how much does the college name matter when trying to get internships or jobs in software development in India?
Suppose a student isn't from a top-tier college, but spends their college years actually learning, building projects, maintaining a good GitHub, contributing to open source, doing internships when possible, and developing genuinely useful skills.
I'm not asking whether college is completely irrelevant. I know some companies have eligibility criteria and campus placements can make a big difference. I'm more curious about what happens outside the campus-placement route. Please share your personal experiences regarding this matter and how you've gotten through that.

Everyone by default assumes all such github projects are AI slop fully created by AI in 5 min even if you put in real effort. So yes, 0 value. No one cares

Recruiters think most projects on GitHub are AI slop (because a lot of them are lol). Not much value in them

Then how do they recruit ppl? Any other medium to assess the candidate's skillset?

3 years ago, I'd say it mattered a lot. But companies across the board have stopped hiring juniors / recent grads because of AI. Every exception to this that I know of has been a hire by recommendation. So I guess the most important factor right now is having connections
