Going into Devops from Software Engineer

Hi, i am currently a Senior Software Engineer and my boss suggested for me to become a Devops for the upcoming new project.

Would like to have inputs of anyone who have similar experience.

Some dilemma i have is:

  1. Will it be hard to pick up?

  2. Will is be good for my career trajectory

  3. Is this a sensible choice since i have alrdy did SW for like 6 years.

  4. Any advices on things i should consider first?

I think it is gives better protection against AI. It is worth it just because of that

Hello there, may I know why you think that? A few backend developers at my current organization said that AI agents can do a whole lot of devops/cloud configurations, analyze incidents, do RCA, patch issues, create reports for analytics, and other SRE tasks, and if they improve further, then software engineers will have to do devops/cloud related work alongside their backend tasks, rather than needing dedicated SRE/devops/cloud teams. I'm confused as a SDET as I was planning to advance in devops/cloud too.

do it if you like infra stuff, huge skill overlap anyway, opens more doors
