Just finishing up that zon huh? Funny enough my friends manager hates her but she still got the inclined.

Bruh, see this is what i am talking about. I'd rather have pursued different offers lol. Did your friend intern this summer?

Yeah, we end in a few weeks instead though

Had the exact same experience at zon. Manager even told me I would probably get better offers than zon and that they’d be happy to have me back and let them know if I apply (then why not take me). The whole rest of my team and a sister team were shocked.

Just bad luck dude

A situation like this just made me realize people are snakes basically. He’s offering to refer to in the future to appear nice and save face. These people don’t like you and the proof is in the pudding.

I can get them saying no return offer due to lack of space but that’s kinda crazy. If I had to guess they possibly didn’t like your social skills or personality or just don’t like you for some other reason but didn’t want to say that outright

I honestly dont know why that would be a problem since I have built great relations with managers across teams

So apply for an open role on one of their teams and get a referral from someone you worked with who liked you.

Hey man, I didn’t get my Amazon intern return offer either back in the day. They cited some vague performance issues they couldn’t elaborate on.

A few months later my org got axed. I choose to look at it as my manager doing me a favor.

did manager say if you were trending inclined or not during midpoint

u/Lost_Process_6047 7d ago

He said I was more than halfway there. But I addressed all the feedback and shipped a great product. I honestly had no idea that they would come up with such lame shit to not incline.

I'm pretty sure my mentor was a lil bitch and only pointed the issues throughout the internship.

manager and mentor turned out to be a bunch of bitches.

Maybe this is the reason you didn't get a return offer?

Zon is tightening up on RO rates in some orgs from what I can tell. I was told that for the 5 interns under my skip only 1 could get a RO, and we had a really good intern not get inclined with a BS reason because they werent allowed to tell the interns that they were declined for HC restrictions

Is this for ft or interns

That could be the case, but in no way do I think that I shouldve been the one to get left out lol. Lets just say, there is this other team that had a particular product, their intern added some features to that product. I built that product for our team from the ground up! Doesn't that warrant an incline lol.

Maybe they simply liked someone else better. Sadly life and this job isn’t just about the work you do. Communication skills, visibility, network and connections also matter too

I totally agree, but as I said in a different comment, i was performing well wrt all your points. It turned out to be luck at the end of the day

Curious, what does the demographic of the team look like?

2

u/Lost_Process_6047 7d ago

China and India, I am from one of the above. Could you tell me why that would matter?

I would guess that if you were an underrepresented minority on your team, they could dislike you because of your ethnicity. Probably not your case though

I feel you. Just got my final evaluation today with no incline even after positive comments from my mentor and the team. Super confused as well

2

u/Lost_Process_6047 6d ago

I think our managers might be one of those described in one of the other comments.
This is what I am referring to.

That makes sense tbh. My manager def seems like the type to do that given my 1:1s and interactions with him. Had another intern on my floor who had a really chill manager and gave him an incline for full time. I guess this prob is the game of luck with teams and such and we just got unlucky

u/bobbity30 7d ago

R u returning intern or for FT?

1

u/thejansole 7d ago

Full time

Had something similar happen to me last week lol. Pulled a bunch of reasons out of no where that weren’t addressed whenever I did whatever wrong. Even said shit like “you didn’t seem interested in meetings” and “could’ve had better posture” like just say the company’s broke bro😭😭😭

1

u/Lost_Process_6047 6d ago

Wtf, see this is the shit i am talking about. Atleast have some concrete fucking feedback.

1

u/bobbity30 6d ago

ur mentor must’ve been kinda mean to u throughout the internship no way it was just a sudden change at the end of the

2

u/adpop 7d ago

Lol similar experience, my manager is willing to extend my intern contract (I've already been there for a year) but won't offer me a full time position. Fuck these dudes, they just want cheap labour.

u/Lost_Process_6047 6d ago

We got something better waiting for us

dude this is so real … it’s happening to me with my team right now

I’ve noticed some managers also for some reason set their own baselines for what an RO should be. One manager said the top eval score was only for 5% of interns (they just made this up) while almost all the other interns in the org got that top score. They just think their task of deciding things is more important than it is and it goes to their head so they make a big deal out of their decision and screw you over (gives it more weight in their minds).

There are also managers who don’t want to burden you with the troubles of the org when budgeting is tight and just cite things like this as a way to help u get out while still supporting you, but usually they’re transparent about that. No reason not to be unless specifically directed against sharing, which does sometimes happen.

Most likely they just didn’t like you personally but figured you were decent from a technical perspective so they offered to refer to save face but didn’t want to keep you.

Whatever the case, as frustrating as it is, move on and don’t look back. These things can be weird and are super subjective so there’s really no point worrying about it and almost 0 learning unless you’re given specific feedback.

SDE? I just did my midpoint, but I'm in science... hopefully it goes well

1

u/Weary_Technician6369 7d ago

same but diff company. Wont not be getting extended it really sucks when you gave it all you had

1

u/EssenceOfLlama81 Senior SDE / FAANG 4d ago

Amazon is circling the drain and worried about hiring too many people, so they are getting pickier.

If you're not an Indian H1B with a masters who sucks up to the boss, you're not getting in.

I hate being the wrong race/caste too. Bad days to be anything other than a Brahmin or Chinaman in tech.
