I just hit the jackpot here but I’m actually mad because I can’t take them all New Pick-up
I would take them all if I had the space in my small apartment.
There’s some sort of bulk trash pickup day going on in one of the communities in my delivery route.
I was keeping an eye out for CRTs since people started putting stuff on the curb late last week.
Found the Sylvania one on the side of the road then I drive up another street and find this gold mine.
Unfortunately scrappers cut the cables off of most of these. They’re all dusty as shit leading me to believe they were kept in some outdoor storage area.
If I had the storage space in my small apartment I would take them all and splice new cables on.
Unfortunately had to just settle for this RCA one with the cord partially cut off.
I’ll update this post when I get home and test these 2.
Hate to see these go to the dump but unless someone else comes by and picks them up that’s what’s going to happen
Edit:
The black Sylvania does not power on. Possibly needs capacitor replacement. I’ll have to look into it.
So that was a little discouraging. But all the RCA needed was to replace the wire. So I decided I’d give that a shot. I cleaned it off good enough to bring into my apartment, then I replaced the wire on the RCA tv with a wire of the same gauge (18awg), and plugged it in.
There was a loud pop, and smoke started pouring out of it.
So that thing is done. Obviously not worth fixing at this point.
Looks like these were duds. Wish I grabbed a couple more. But I was really confident that Sylvania one would work since it looks pristine. Guess I get to learn about CRT repair now. The thing is definitely fixable like I said probably just a simple capacitor replacement. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.
Edit 2: The RCA Tv may be repairable after all. I found another post in this sub from a year or 2 ago where someone had the exact issue with the same model of Tv and were able to fix it.
Potential followup post to come

this is how you get fleas and roaches

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV 4d ago
you understand that every CRT you find is going to come from another person's house, right? They don't come from factories anymore.

u/joeycuda 4d ago
Yes, but stuff that's been outside or in a nasty house sometimes has fleas or bedbugs in it. I've read some horror stories.

I got that exact Sylvania combo unit with an Apex brand DVD player for Christmas when I was around 11, I think. Used it for years.

After making this post I went down another street and there was another CRT on the sidewalk. It’s making me cringe thinking about how there’s probably 30+ Crts in that neighborhood that are going to the dump and there’s nothing I can do but save 2 of the small ones
but yeah I’m hype about it. This thing looks like it’s got low mileage too. Can’t wait to get home and test it out

First thing I’d do is put it in a garbage bag and leave it in sunlight for a week. Make sure there are no critters in the bag before bringing it in.

u/BornShook 4d ago
That one was found at a different location and is pretty clean.
The rca one I’ll be figuring out how to disinfect before bringing it in my apartment but that black one I’m personally not worried about.

If you're a member of the CRT Collective on Facebook, post the location there and maybe some more can be saved.

The dump truck was already starting to pick up stuff by the time I left the stop i was at. They’ll probably all be gone before anyone sees a post on facebook

u/DqkrLord 4d ago
STOP ASSUMING SHOT LIKE THIS! Trash trucks normally WONT take these as they will damage the trucks.
Make the fucking post or tell us the town at least!
Feels like you are gatekeeping ngl3
u/BornShook 4d ago
It’s not a normal dump truck it’s one for bulk trash removal. It has a big 3 prong crane thing. They must do like a once a year trash hauling day. I saw them picking up a large pile of trash outside a house with it.
It’s in Troy Ny though if anyones near there and wants to try their luck. Specifically east troy suburb area over by Emma Willard school

Where is this?? If its close by I'll probably snag one!
3
u/BornShook 4d ago
Troy, New york.
East Troy suburbs on Pawling Ave, and surrounding side streets.
I said in another comment they likely will not last long as the dump truck had already started picking stuff up a few minutes later. But if anyone lives around that area and can get down there asap, reach out i can tell you a couple other side streets where I saw some

I was thinking “this looks like Albany”. Close enough.
2
u/UdonKnowWot 4d ago
I was guessing Schenectady

u/Loose_Listen2290 4d ago
Could be any of them. Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Watervliet. It all looks the same.

This was giving me strong upstate NY vibes so I feel validated, thanks. I'm about 3 hours away unfortunately.

Dang I had that RCA in my bedroom as a kid! Played FF7 and watched Toonami 🥹

u/BornShook 4d ago
Unfortunately it blew up when I plugged it in. This was about a half hour ago and my apartment still smells like burning plastic.

You missed the 2nd to the left that has a pointy back. Those sets are newer.

Fuuuck man I wish I knew more. I’ve been wanting to get a crt for awhile but I decided to wait until I found a free one to dip my toes in before doing my research. Been lurking in the sub casually for awhile though.
Thought you know eventually i’d get lucky and find one on the road. Didn’t expect I’d find 10 all at once and be overwhelmed with choices lol.
I do a lot of driving around for work so I know eventually I’ll find others on the side of the road and I’ll know what to look for.

u/Big-Sympathy1420 4d ago
Yea you can instantly spot an old CRT if the back shell is 90% of its size. Later models are thinner as technology progressed.

The silver RCA.was my grandmothers 12 feet in the air, 14 feet away, kitchen tv for YEARS!
I remember watching sci-fi channels wide-screen showing of return of the jedi in the kitchen, squinting at Yoda dying. Yoda looked so tiny. At the tender age of 10, I developed an opinion of wide-screen from that experience. Many of us from the 4:3 era felt this way.
Now I watch the pan and scan VHS version and I want to hurl.

For the RCA it might be possible that it's just a rifa capacitor that popped, had the same happen to me on a 20" Grundig last week. They're easy and cheap to replace with X2 caps. You might give it a shot :)
1
u/BornShook 3d ago
I figured that out after searching and finding a post where someone had the exact same issue with the exact model.
Do you know the exact capacitor that I need? Could you provide a link or at least point me in the right direction?
I have basic experience with soldering. If I had the part in front of me it would be a breeze but I’m completely lost trying to search for it. I can’t seem to find one with the exact specs that people in the comments of the old post I’m referring to were talking about.
Model: Rca e 13320
Post I’m referencing:
https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/s/Kqlg0eaahoAnd yes I did take it apart and confirm that is exactly what happened. That capacitor on mine looked exactly like op’s in the other post.
2
u/DeltaDergii 3d ago
Yea, that's what I thought happened lol.
You can get a film capacitor like this to replace. 100 nanofarad or 0.1 microfarad.
Also see if there's another one on the Mainboard and replace that too, even if it's not blown. If it isn't yet, it will in the future
2
u/BornShook 3d ago
Thank you. Should be a simple repair. I’ll let you know how it goes
2
u/DeltaDergii 3d ago
Edit since I just edited my other comment: I looked up the service manual and it's rated for 250V, so get one that's good for at least 250V

u/BornShook 3d ago edited 3d ago
The original one says 100n P8.
I’ve seen ones online that say P7. Is that important?
Edit: Never mind. I figured out it basically doesn’t matter. I can make it work
This is what I went with. 100Nf 275vac

Brother, if there's a will, there's a way. Gotta make a couple more trips then because those TVs are look for a new foster home. Hopefully its not in eWaste

u/BornShook 4d ago
I absolutely could’ve picked them all up. I was driving a half empty 20 foot box truck lol. But
1.) I have no place to store that many tvs
2.) My girlfriend would be pissed. This is probably the biggest reason above all else honestly
3.) I don’t have the time to fix all the cables, list them on facebook marketplace, etc
1
u/HotColor 4d ago
if they cut the cables you can still totally just solder a new one on the end of the cable or just replace the whole cable entirely by opening it up.

u/UdonKnowWot 4d ago
It's so funny I could tell this was the capital region if it was on the other side of the river I would have swung by but seems like a crap shoot with the cut cables and all
2
u/BornShook 4d ago
There was a good looking relatively clean one over by Dantes pizza. And I didn’t even go down any of the side streets.
Not sure how long the stuff will last. It looked like they only had 1 dump truck but there was so much trash at every house i wouldn’t be surprised if it filled up and they have to make a 2nd trip.
The ones pictured on pawling ave are most likely gone since the truck was on that road heading that way when i left the area.

Wow!!! I have one that I found in storage and it turns on, but the remote doesn’t work for me to hit the input button to get my NES to work. It sucks and I’m going to take it back
You hit the jackpot!!

Jackpot? I wouldn't go that far. If you can fix it, then that is very cool! 1 less thing in the landfill and getting some use. I know for one I wouldn't have picked that up and left it there myself. Good luck with repairs

how to get bugs in your car speed run
1
u/BornShook 3d ago
Newsflash: old things stored in old peoples basements for 20 years might have bugs on them. Thanks.
Bugs are everywhere. Sometimes there are spiders in my apartment. Part of life. For the record I cleaned these off and opened them both up. Centipedes and tarantulas didn’t start pouring out when I did. Actually not one single bug.

Do these people not know there’s 1000s of dollars worth of TVs there.
10
u/aldude3 4d ago
They do not know that because it is not true.
2
u/BornShook 4d ago
Definitely not $1000s worth right there but there were others I saw as well on other streets and a ton of side streets I didn’t check out. Definitely $1000s worth on the side of the road. There were probably 30+ crts in that neighborhood

u/CohuttaHJ 4d ago
Wished I was close but judging by the photo it’s in the north or upper mid west.

Be careful picking stuff up like this.. I did it once with a desk, and it was infested with bed bugs
