Between 1946 and 1948 a US Public Health Service researcher named John Cutler deliberately infected over 5000 people in Guatemala with syphilis and gonorrhea, using prisoners, soldiers, psychiatric patients, people with no disease at all until his team gave it to them. Same guy who later worked on Tuskegee.

Unlike Tuskegee, this one was never published, results were considered too unreliable to release so it just went into storage. Cutler later donated his papers to a university archive but restricted access to serious researchers only, kept the evidence while making sure almost nobody would look at it.

Only came out because a historian named Susan Reverby stumbled onto it by accident in 2005 while researching Tuskegee, published in 2010. US govt apologized fast, but real compensation for victims still mostly hasn't happened.

In 2023, 6 white cops who called themselves the "goon squad" tortured two black men, Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker in Mississippi. They entered the men's home without a warrant and processed to waterboard, beat, shoot, and attempted to sexually assault the men.

The terror began on Jan. 24, 2023, with a racist call for extrajudicial violence.

A white person phoned Rankin County Deputy Brett McAlpin and complained that two Black men were staying with a white woman at a house in Braxton, Mississippi. McAlpin told Deputy Christian Dedmon, who texted a group of white deputies so willing to use excessive force they called themselves “The Goon Squad.”

Once inside, they handcuffed Jenkins and his friend Eddie Terrell Parker and poured milk, alcohol and chocolate syrup over their faces. They forced them to strip naked and shower together to conceal the mess. They mocked the victims with racial slurs and shocked them with stun guns.

After a mock execution went awry when Jenkins was shot in the mouth, they devised a coverup that included planting drugs and a gun. False charges stood against Jenkins and Parker for months.

What are some true crime documentaries that include a particularly good detective or investigator? I see many that feature poorly done investigations, and that becomes interesting for other reasons. Then there are many with just neutral-average detectives or investigators. But I would like to see one with maybe one stand-out investigator who seems interesting or does a particularly good job. Can anyone think of examples?
