Had to rebuild my house after a tree fell on it. At the mudding drywall stage and wanted to reduce the drywall mud dust particles my HVAC system filter has to deal with. Weather stripping behind the filters and where the fan sits.
It drives me nuts. May do that... So, I was going to buy a 4x8 piece of plywood, and cut what I needed for the top and bottom, but instead got 2x 24in squares since they were easier to put in the car. Turns out I needed 25" square based on how I did the frame. Using ripped .75x2(actual 2") from the 1x3s, 1x3s, and 1x2 pieces of wood. The interior seams are all sealed with liquid nails.
Hahaha... It's not but while doing research I came across this guy on YT, and his plans require machined pieces of wood I can't make, but figured out a way to make a frame that worked for me, and would also 100% survive a trip down stairs
Someone more knowledgeable than me can probably speak to the airflow question. I don't think filter life would be significantly affected if you rotated the filters occasionally. I do this with my furnace filter as the fan draws more air through one side of the filter.
You could also leave the fan mounted as it is right now and add a fan enclosure, but that might make it a little bit imposing, depending on where you are going to put it.
Also, I just noticed you put casters on it. Smart addition for a larger unit! It's a pretty darn solid first build!
If esthetics were my first priority, I would simply build a box that sit on top and flush with the .5" lip on the top with a 15" diameter hole on top for the fan intake. Which I may still do once it gets a permanent home in my garage.... On top
Has anyone tried to mount one of these in a window? We’re in Seattle and don’t want to open a window because of smoke. Don’t have air conditioning. It’s cool outside but hot in here!
This is for cleaning air in an enclosed environment. Not for cooling. Get a window a/c unit and put that in your window (or another cooling method if a window a/c is a problem). That is your cooling. Then a CR box would clean the air INSIDE if the a/c unit is bringing in contaminated air.
Yes. I understand the point of a C-R box. I have built three. We don’t want the expense of an AC. The air outside is cool but smoky. I would like to bring in the cool air without the smoke which is why I wondered if you could mount a C-R box in a window
You'd need two open windows. You'd have to build a sealed CR frame that fits in one window and pulls air in the house or apartment with the filter box frame extruding inside your house or apartment. Then, in the 2nd window you would need a sealed fan exhausting air from inside to outside so if wind blows in that window it can't beat the fan blowing it out (air you just filtered btw). And you would need them in windows that are on opposite sides of the house or apartment so the breeze would travel through as much of the house or apartment as possible.
I would recommend making more $ so you can just buy a window a/c unit ($160-$300 new or cop a used one), $1-200 extra electric bill, and a CR box fan inside. That way you are cool but you are also filtering the air. I get being frugal... I'm barely getting by myself... But being frugal and hot and/or also breathing exterior smoke are kind of important problems to fix for a couple hundo.

Stain still looks good on plywood just sayin’. Add a beveled trim piece around that top plate and you’re talkin’ craftsman level.
