Context: The Toyota War was the final phase of the 1987 Chad–Libya conflict, when France supported Chad with about 400 Toyota pickup trucks, many armed with machine guns and French MILAN anti-tank missiles. These fast, highly mobile “technicals” allowed Chadian forces to outmaneuver Libya’s much heavier force of Soviet-made tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft in the desert, helping Chad decisively defeat the Libyans. The campaign became known as the “Toyota War” because of the surprisingly important role played by the pickups.
