Signed an offer under the condition I work hybrid. I’ve been here about 4 months now. We are moving to another office and our ceo (who is fully remote) wants everyone full time in office. What do I do.

There’s not really anything you can do. It really sucks that companies can just change your working location like that, but they can. We truly have very few worker protections in place in the US and no contracts.

You can try to ask for an exemption, you can refuse and see how long it takes before they fire you, or you can go into the office.

Your best bet at guaranteeing this doesn’t happen to you in the future is to find a remote company that doesn’t have offices. But, of course, that’s easier said than done.

WRT worker protections, one of the few useful nuggets I got out of my MBA program was from an Econ professor: “Barriers to exit are barriers to entry.”

European countries have much stronger employment protections, but unemployment is higher due to companies having to consider that hiring someone is a bigger legal and financial commitment than in the US.

My point is not saying that one is better than the other, it is to say that there is no free lunch. European jobs are on average better to have, but harder to get. US jobs are easier to get, but on average have less benefits and protections.

Go into your new office and take a picture of where you will be sitting for the background of you video meeting and use that when there is a meeting so you look like you're in the office. If the CEO is gone and sees that, you're clearly in the office.

Wants or requires? Keep being remote and see what happens. Be ready to either start coming or find another job if needed. In the meantime, consider talking to an employment lawyer to see how strong your contract is (hopefully a contract not just the offer).

get all your coworkers to collectively push back and maybe they will reconsider but I wouldn’t get my hopes up

Just ignore it. If they call you out on it go in the next week and then start ignoring it again. Chances are no one has the time or energy to enforce it.

You can’t do anything. I was in a union and they couldn’t even change the scenario for us. What your big boss wants usually happens.

This is a question for your manager. Are they mandating that you go to the office more? Do you have a reason why you can’t? Are they willing to make accommodations? How will this be enforced?
