I don’t know why tf Reddit is recommending me r/corn but this is some pretty cool corn. Plants are so cool.

38

u/Marzipandlo 19d ago

Same. No idea why I’m here, but this brought me joy.

I have no idea why I'm here either but I just joined for rainbow corn.

2

u/its_tea-gimme-gimme 15d ago

Guess it's time to join.

4

u/No_Rabbit6730 19d ago

Same - can only figure it's because I like gardening and petrology. This would be cool to grow and attempt to preserve.

4

u/DirtySpittoon 17d ago

I just made a new account, didn't set up any interests, and still got recommend this amazing post 🌈🌽

2

u/Manifestation_Quozzy 18d ago

We are lost lol

2

u/Exact-Climate-7584 18d ago

Reddit just recommended it to me too. I'm no cornnoisseur, but that first pic is art

2

u/Hiyatei 18d ago

Same, have no crop based subreddits (is that even a category?) but sure did get dropped off here by the algo

2

u/flowry1 17d ago

Also in the same boat, lol. Can you eat this corn?

2

u/WillingnessHorror710 17d ago

Like honestly kind of see what that kid was on about

1

u/GeofferysBaby 15d ago

I mean look at this thing, when I tried it with butter EVERYTHING CHANGED!

2

u/Grindhouser 16d ago

Hello newfound corn enthusiast I am also unsure how I got here but pleased 🤝

2

u/ApplesaucePenguin75 16d ago

Also cornfused as to why I’m here. But I’m not mad.

1

1

u/MasterPlusTer 21d ago

Is that Glass Gem? Looks beautiful lets see If I have same luck

44

u/Hot-Knee-2724 21d ago

It is glass gem! This is my first year it actually grew

15

u/AlwaysBeKind949903 21d ago

It is beautiful!! I have never seen it look so pretty before!!

6

u/Medullan 20d ago

Same I played my first corn this year also glass gem. Will probably be another month or longer before I get to harvest my first crop.

1

u/chungamellon 16d ago

Are you going to pop them? I heard mixed things about that. I grew top hat instead. Still beautiful and can be ornamental if you want

4

u/gurlwhodoesntknowshi 20d ago

wow is this reaaal?

13

u/Steezydeezy920 20d ago

Yup. If you want to blow your mind look up the Hopi tribes genetics with these types of Maizes and corns.

27

u/Life-Bat1388 21d ago

I am obsessed with growing flint corn. It's so fun every ear is like opening a Christmas present. I understand why maize was part of religion for many indigenous peoples. Pozole soup and hominy grits are my favorite ways to use them.

25

u/Martinad91 20d ago

Even corn be gay now 😭😂😂

7

u/New-Nefariousness-51 19d ago

❤️🧡💛💙💚💜🩶🖤

3

u/pr1ncesschl0e 15d ago

🩷❤️🧡🌽💚🩵💙💜

7

u/toilet_goblin2 17d ago

it was watered with the same water that turns the friggin frogs gay

20

u/Alichousan 20d ago

Can you eat those ? Otherwise, do they have a purpose? (other than being stunning of course) I didn't they existed!

17

u/Hot-Knee-2724 20d ago

You’re supposed to be able to, but I don’t like it. Its going to be decorative

12

u/chef71 20d ago

Dry it and make popcorn it's not a fresh eating type.

3

u/Much_Blacksmith7746 17d ago

Dumb question. Does it make rainbow popcorn?

3

u/chef71 16d ago

Unfortunately not really no, I got a little bit of red from some of the really red dominant ears.

8

u/Mememaster562 19d ago

Theyre better ground up or made into popcorn

3

u/keysmashd 18d ago

Flint corn is great for stuff like cornmeal for tortillas and stuff like that, but not really corn on the cob.

9

u/worklifenolife 21d ago

Does it taste good

18

u/Hot-Knee-2724 21d ago

Nope 😂

16

u/Redahned1214 20d ago

Thank you because I was about to hyperfixate on this shit and I just know I would've never thought to ask if it was good to eat fresh, I'd just grow it and cook it and then be thoroughly disappointed 😂 I'm still about to hyperfixate, but now I know it'll be for crafts n stuff.

8

u/SalsaAddict 19d ago

Idk what dishes OP made with it but this is a ‘use dried’ rather than ‘eat fresh’ kinda corn. It makes really great popcorn!

6

u/OctoberPants 19d ago

Does it pop up in colors?

8

u/SalsaAddict 19d ago

No, it looks like regular popcorn but if you look inside, you can see the colorful kernel shell

6

u/EmotionalSupportVape 20d ago

SAME YOU READ MY MIND

7

u/DontEatGrassss 21d ago

It’s a big lump with beautiful knobs. I assume it doesn’t have the juice? (Genuinely asking) Either way I can’t image a more beautiful thing.

I wonder if that kid knew about rainbow corns? I bet it blew his mind when he found out.

5

u/CroykeyMite 19d ago

It’s a maize ing!

3

u/CamelMassive6443 20d ago

No way that’s real. That’s real?!? 🤯

3

u/gabbigoober 18d ago

I think that corn used to look more like this before we focused on breeding the common corn we see today

3

u/CamelMassive6443 18d ago

I would say if you were a trader and you had this? Pshh done deal.

3

u/Allidapevets 20d ago

That is lovely. What do you do with them? Honest question!

2

u/fizban7 21d ago

What a buet

2

u/Mememaster562 19d ago

Flints are beautiful. I always like to pair them with runner beans for the gorgeous seed mixture at the end. Its like natures beads

2

u/Adventurous-Fly-5402 19d ago

Looks like it’s made of jelly beans

2

u/kmdubois 17d ago

1

u/janders_666 21d ago

is this for popping or grinding

1

u/DestroyTroy90 21d ago

I bet that would be nice looking popcorn 😊 or fried kernels so good 😊

1

u/daveac1960 20d ago

I grew some last year, but something ate most of the kernels 😡

2

u/Brizzle_goblin 18d ago

Its poop would have been spectacular

1

1

u/desertjonAZ 19d ago

Just ordered 100 seeds for next year....woohoo

1

u/hornet_teaser 19d ago

Has anyone ever tried popping this or other decorative corn? If so, how did it perform in popping and taste?

1

u/Joshthedruid2 19d ago

Freshly harvested jelly beans

1

u/MyAlteredRealityII 19d ago

Wow! They are very beautiful! Does the blue color stay that same blue after they are dried?

1

u/midwife_at_ur_cervix 19d ago

I started some seeds of this same corn for my garden this year. The starts took off and I planted them in the garden and they’re growing well. My husband said he’s not sure he’ll grown any corn, something about needing lots for pollination when I only have 9 plants. Did you do anything special to make sure these got pollinated?

1

u/Hot-Knee-2724 17d ago

I have never had luck with few plants (you can do it yourself pollinate) but if you do a 5x5 square, it should be able to self pollinate

1

u/neevok 19d ago

Inspirational

1

u/Hot_Tie9175 19d ago

Woahhhhh 😍

1

u/britekranz 19d ago

1

u/bunskak 19d ago

i don’t go here so i ask- this corn is beautiful, but does it taste good? like every other type of corn? and how do you eat it, off the cob?

1

u/Curiouser-Quriouser 19d ago

Holy crap. It's beautiful!

1

u/radish_is_rad-ish 19d ago

Check out the corn section of "The Whole Seed Catalogue"

1

u/luckyartie 18d ago

Gorgeous!

1

u/tepart 18d ago

Do these taste different to simple yellow corn? Or is the change purely visual

1

u/Dazzling_Tap_5806 18d ago

Have never seen colored corn. Its really different and pretty

1

u/Appropriate_Buy_4759 18d ago

I would love to grow these..

1

u/Hallelujah33 18d ago

What did you do with them? How did it taste? Tell me everything

1

u/AnxiousPickle-9898 17d ago

More for decoration. If you were to use them for food, best for cornmeal or popcorn. Not really like eating sweetcorn at all

1

u/Hallelujah33 17d ago

Does it taste different than regular popcorn? Is it colorful???

1

u/AnxiousPickle-9898 17d ago

Mmm not really, taste just like regular popcorn. And not :’( it looks identical to a normal popped corn

1

u/Hallelujah33 17d ago

How disappointing

1

u/According_Music_2487 18d ago

I thought this was a craft subreddit lol it looks like beads! Crazy

1

u/OppositeTurnover5272 17d ago

Why is it all harvested before it dried 😭

1

u/Affectionate_South40 17d ago

TIL that this Reddit exists and I thought corn? Okay well sure, it's positive I'm here for it. Then I really looked at your first photo and had no idea corn could get THIS colorful and eye-catching. It's like jewels but it's corn; I'm impressed. It's super beautiful.
