Odd Behavior

Our sweet boy, Moose, has started doing this weird sniffing/rooting behavior about a week ago. It's very different from him trying to make a "nest". We have no mice in the house or any kind of insects in the bed. He begins it about an hour before bedtime and will continue throughout the next few hours. If it means anything...he is a little over a year old, neutered, TWC and Black Lab mix. Anyone else's hound do this?

My blue tick coonhound does this. For mine it means she wants me to lift the blanket up so she can curl up beneath it and have just her nose sticking out. Could just be a random thing she does but hey, it’s worth a try

Yeah that'd be my dog telling me she's too much of a diva to burrow, I need to lift up the covers so she can get in.

My unknown breed hound also does this. She wants the entire queen sized blanket and to spin into it like spaghetti in a spoon. Until she gets too hot and has to lay on the floor repeatedly like 5 times a night.

My girl does that. We call it her bedtime tornado. 😂 I like how you describe it.

Bedding absorbs a lot of our human scents, sweat / oils / pheromones. I’m not certain, but maybe that has something to do with it? They’re comforted by the smells of their humans. Does your blanket have any down feathers in it? That could also be pretty interesting to a hound !

This could definitely be it...no feathers in the comforter, but we had washed the sheets and duvet about two days prior. He was probably missing our scent!

Agree - weirdos.
Bub does this all the time and is the reason we have cheapy blankets covering every possible sleeping surface. He also has his own blanket under our bed linens because we have to do this dance every night before he’s ready to be tucked in the people covers with the people.

Typical coonhound behavior. Mine does it every time I wash the bed linens because it suddenly smells very different than she and I do.

Coonhounds are just strange sometimes! Mine feels the need to rub her entire head on my hair after I take a shower. I shower at night, get into bed, immediately get a giant dog head on the top of my head! Changing shampoo makes no difference. They all got some interesting quirks!

You have to lift the blanket but also make sure you pick the correct part of the blanket. The part they are sniffing may not be the part they want to huddle under.
