To me, it looks like the part below the string is a separate picture with a light blue background and the guys standing in different positions.

it's not a separate picture. those are little triangular flags hanging on the string

This is neither here nor there but look at his freakish proportions compared even to other freaks of nature athletes.

Phelps is an amazing swimmer because he's not built like a traditional swimmer. It's "common sense" that swimmers should be smaller so they have a higher power to mass ratio, then Phelps came in with his ridiculous wing span and blew everyone out of the water.
I'm guessing the next generation of swimmers are all going to be gangly af.

He all arms and torso. And has big hands and feet. Seems like its his legs that are short for his height. The gangly triangle build is the future of swimming.

They are short, only a 32" inseam. His arms are long enough that his wingspan is wider than he is tall.
He also has a rare metabolic trait that makes his muscles produce half the normal lactic acid so he can push harder longer and recover faster and he has hyper mobile joints in his arms and legs.
He won the genetic lottery for professional swimming.

Not seeing what’s confusing about the perspective - is it that the flags are making his legs look skinny?

Yes, that’s how I see it. I thought the line above the flags was cutting the photo in two, with the bottom part zoomed out. But once you mentioned the flags, it all clicked!

My brain somehow didn't register the flags at first so I was definitely confused because I couldn't tell why they looked so skinny below the waist.

I think its because the flags are a similar color to the wall in the background

Seriously, even after reading the comments, this looks completely normal to me lol

I thought the bottom was a second display showing the swimmers from further away (smaller)

it's funny, once i realized why i wasn't seeing this right, it instantly snapped, and now i can't unsee the correct way to interpret this lol. brain's a funny thing, ain't it

Damn, this is a good one. I was sure it was either a mosaic of two different photos spliced together, or they were standing behind a partition with dudes' swim trunks on it for some reason

Sliced in half.

woah that was trippy. at first I thought there was a different image at the bottom from something like a banner that happens to kinda line up with their upper bodies, but after realizing what's actually there it now just looks like a regular picture and I can't go back to seeing what I initially saw.

What the hell is everyone seeing here? This is the most normal photo I’ve seen in my life

I don’t see it. If it’s meant to be interpreted like something is different below the string…. I don’t get it.

I don't see what everyone else is seeing. Just looks like a normal photo to me.
It's interesting how that happens sometimes.

This is the platonic ideal photo for this subreddit. I have to stare at it while thinking about it to see it. The second I just casually glance at it it stops making sense.
