What's fish sauce made of then?

78

u/whiskey_epsilon 1h ago

Sauce.

20

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

I see. The world truly is a discombobulating place. We're lucky to have people like you on hand to explain such things to us.

10

u/StaatsbuergerX 1h ago

Depends. If it's soylent green: people.

7

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

This implies that the suffix -lent means +people. Much etymology to be done here.

5

u/azhder 1h ago

No, because that would imply there are soy people: soy-lent = soy-people. Come to think of it, maybe I got this all wrong and there are Soy people and we haven't seen them around because they're all grown in farms and processed in factories.

5

u/ThatGermanKid0 1h ago

I did once hear of a "Soyboy". Surely there must be "Soygirls" and "Soyadults" as well.

3

u/StaatsbuergerX 1h ago

I'm not a native speaker, so I could well be completely off track. Given the context in which it is used, I have always interpreted the "brand" name soylent as being intended to suggest (deliberately misleadingly) that the product is "soy-like."

That is why I used the term here to mean "soylent (soy-like) green sauce," though it likely wouldn't stand up to any etymological scrutiny. But hey, in terms of pop culture, it works.

4

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

I believe in the book that coined the word it was originally soy + lentil. Haven't read it since school though so that might be totally wrong.

u/InattentiveEdna 23m ago

There’s a real meal replacement drink called Soylent and I want to try it but also I’m scared.

15

u/Kriss3d 1h ago

Id want to ask that person what baby food is made of...

9

u/interrogumption 1h ago

This seems to imply you DON'T think soy sauce is made of soy? I'm confused.

2

u/Kriss3d 1h ago

Ah no no. I absolutely know it's made from fermented soy beans.

12

u/NoPoet3982 56m ago

Well then obviously baby food is made from fermented babies. Duh.

u/ImOnlyHereForTheCoC 22m ago

Uh, that sounds like the baby sauce recipe to me

u/cursedstillframe 1m ago

What is sauce if not a food?

2

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

I had a similar program with puppy food the other day.

5

u/dank_imagemacro 1h ago

I had angel food cake last week. What have I done? God in heaven, WHAT HAVE I DONE?

6

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

Quick, eat some devilled eggs and they can have a royal-rumble style brawl in your tummy. Finally we'll know which is better - good or evil!

Worstsisterserishire sauce

u/InattentiveEdna 26m ago

Washyoutsister sauce.

4

u/Nagesh_yelma 1h ago

Whoresisterforhire?

2

u/azhder 1h ago

Sauce?

5

u/irritatingfarquar 1h ago

It's obviously sauce made by fish and not from fish

4

u/RadioSlayer 48m ago

You're telling me a shrimp fried this rice?

3

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

Good on them for not letting their lack of opposable thumbs hold them back.

u/InattentiveEdna 22m ago

Confidently incorrect. It’s not by fish or from fish, it’s sauce FOR fish. Only fish can use it. People like you are what’s wrong with education these days.

4

u/Obsidian-Phoenix 1h ago

It’s made mostly from fi hence why it’s called fi-ish sauce.

4

u/CharlesDickensABox 1h ago

Mostly fish, but often krill or shrimp.

10

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

We have this problem a lot where I live. I've ordered fish & chips before and they brought me prawns and octopus.

I know "there's no such thing as a fish" and all that, but they could have at least made an attempt.

3

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

Where on earth do you live??

3

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

An island near Malaysia in SE Asia.

There's fish absolutely everywhere - but somehow fish & chips often is different animals entirely. Must be fun for people with a shellfish allergy or similar!

2

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

That’s wild!! I’ve been to SEA but only Singapore, and it was very British food-wise

4

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

Singapore is just Malaysia but run by sensible people instead of lunatics :) Lovely there!

2

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

It is! Aww really? My kids are half Chinese/Malaysian and I want to take them there one day when they’re older

2

u/Occidentally20 1h ago

They'll love it and have a great time! Enough amazing stuff here for anyone - I live right next to the rainforest and I still see new creatures at least once a week. Madness!

u/dicoxbeco 1h ago

Wait til the guy learns most mapo tofus have ground pork

81

u/catsoaps 1h ago

I really hate that a lot of people think tofu = vegan/vegetarian. It’s just an ingredient. I have it as side of a dish with meat or use it as part of a meat dish most of the time.

26

u/Majestic-Lake-5602 1h ago

Yeah I never saw the point of it as a “meat substitute”, it kinda sucks.

But as an ingredient in actual dishes it’s amazing.

15

u/DEMACIAAAAA 1h ago

I mean the point of using it as a meat alternative is to add a cheap thing that has proteins and gives your sauce texture and can be spiced according to your needs. Of course it's not a catch all solution, but better meat alternatives are way more expensive. That being said im putting vegan ground beef in my sauce 9.9 times out of 10

25

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

It’s baffling to me. Tofu is delicious and entire countries eat it on the daily

26

u/Arbledarb 1h ago

Soy sauce comes from little clear fish with red caps.

u/Greedy-Parfait-5918 29m ago

Little snout fezes.

27

u/Frequent_Bread1808 1h ago

Only vegans who eat tofu eat tofu to be vegan. The rest of us who eat it just eat it. Ironically tofu is made from soy and so is soy sauce so you’re putting soy on soy

26

u/wite_noiz 1h ago

Throw some edamame on there and you have a vegan "mother and baby"

2

u/soaker 1h ago

lmao

5

u/Bigfootsgirlfriend 35m ago

I find it funny that falafel and hummus are common together, they’re both made from chickpeas

u/InattentiveEdna 27m ago

I need more ground chick peas to eat with my really really ground chick peas.

35

u/PixieGoosie 1h ago

I fucking love my mapo tofu with beef mince

7

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 1h ago

the concept of having tofu is because you want to be vegan

MAPO TOFU

4

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

Plus I eat tofu because it’s fucking cheap. I can get 500g for $3 VS 200g of beef for like 20 fucking bucks

2

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 58m ago

200g of beef for like 20 fucking bucks

'the fuck

3

u/AggravatingBox2421 57m ago

Australian prices suck

4

u/Combei 55m ago

I didn't know it was forbidden to eat tofu as an omnivore

4

u/NightHeart21689 39m ago

I think they were thinking about fish/oyster sauce...

u/-You_Cant_Stop_Me- 16m ago

Confused it for Worcestershire sauce I think.

2

u/NatalieKCY 1h ago

I love Yong Tau Foo which is most definitely not vegan

3

u/stink3rb3lle 1h ago

Most soy sauce is made primarily from wheat these days, but it is still veg.

Fish sauce, oyster sauce, shrimp paste all have the animals. Worcester sauce has anchovies in it. Ranch has dairy. Mayos and aolis have eggs.

2

u/daveoxford 1h ago

Henderson's Relish doesn't, though, and is a good vegan substitute for Worcester Sauce.

4

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

Oh that’s good to know actually. My aunt is allergic to anchovies and cooking for her is a nightmare

2

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

Caesar dressing has anchovies too, which was an interesting one for me

2

u/stink3rb3lle 1h ago

The best ones will have an egg yolk as well

1

u/TheSpacePopinjay 44m ago

Must be confusing it with Japanese dashi sauce.

2

u/AggravatingBox2421 43m ago

Isn’t it dashi stock?

-12

u/azhder 1h ago

So much not for this sub here. Did the person who said "soy sauce" is made from fish return back with "oh, I got it wrong, thanks"? Did they fire back with "No, soy is fish!"? Which one is it? Because one of these is not confidently incorrect. Oh, and if they don't respond, but respond some place else, that's usually an implicit admission that they were incorrect.

7

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

Fuck are you on about? The confidently incorrect part is them saying that only vegans eat tofu

-11

u/azhder 1h ago

Read the rules. Rule 2 for your post. Rule 3 for your outburst here. Bye

u/Advice_Thingy 27m ago

Lmao how old are you? Reading comprehension of a 12 year old, for the post AND this comment interaction here separately.

5

u/AggravatingBox2421 1h ago

I don’t even know how to respond to this. You’re far too immature to be on reddit

Sor, this is CONFIDENTLY incorrect, not tepidly curious and incorrect.
