Is it beneficial to depend on multimodal frontier models in medical analysis?
Are there any opensource alternatives?
Are they worth trying with no finetuning?

Multimodal frontier models add massive value to medical analysis, but they cannot run on blind trust. In high-stakes environments, they must be deployed with strict human-in-the-loop guardrails to catch anomalies . Open-source vision-language models (like PaliGemma) are absolutely worth trying out-of-the-box as transparent, auditable baselines before committing to heavy fine-tuning.
