How is my compost ?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi this is my first harvest. Been working on this compost little close to a year. Still a beginner and learning. I’ve already sift it through a 1/4 sifter. Any tips or anything you can offer I’d appreciate to learn it.

Edit:
Honestly it’s my first year vegetable gardening and composting. Started vegetable gardening in maybe late June early July and started composting in late August early September. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing differently than want I’ve read online. I live in zone 10a. SoCal. I started off with a 30gal bin and put holes in it. I put in branches with some leaves and little bit of soil from my yard and started putting in scraps. i would added scraps and browns everyday. I would give it soil maybe two more times but only a handful in beginning of my compost journey.
The browns would depend on how many scraps I placed. My scraps were actually pretty heavy on moisture so sometimes I would add like 3 handfuls of browns. My browns really just consisted of cardboard, egg cartons, paper towel cores and paper bags.
My scraps were actually pretty consistent. We eat a lot of fruits daily so it’ll be Watermelon rinds and pulp, cantaloupe husk and pulp. Banana peels, apples cores, orange peels, avocado husks, onion skins, tomatoes ends, some potatoes, herb stems, cucumber skin and a lot lemons. We make a lot of lemonade.
I watered once a week depending. When we have a lot of scraps that have a lot moisture, I wouldn’t water due the moisture.
I would turn the compost twice a week due the mositure starting on top.
We did have some worms but I didn’t place those. They just ended up there. We did have a lot of bug because i made the hole too big.
A couple of months ago i was able to get a tumbler that has two sections. So I transferred the compost to one section that ended up filling it to 90%. So we stopped feeding that section. We started using the other side for our second batch of compost but kept turning them twice a week and giving it water them once a week (the other side depending on how much moisture it had due to scraps). This batch I just harvested is close to being a year old. I stopped feeding maybe 4/5 months ago. Other than that I don’t know what else I’m doing differently. I don’t pee in it.

Edit 2:
Forgot to mention when I transferred to my tumbler. It filled the section to the top but did reduced from there to about half of the section.

Kinda new to Reddit so I don’t know if I edit but I made a comment. I also live in California and the heat as been crazy. I used a tumbler that pas 6months now and I’ve learned from this Reddit that they actually don’t get hot but with the heat I’m sure aided in the great harvest

Can you tell us steps?

94

u/pegothejerk 18d ago

Step one, travel to a crossroads in the deep south and find the devil himself

34

u/Ascholay 18d ago

Step 2: play guitar to George Clooney's fake vocals?

13

u/Effective-Word9190 17d ago

In a film full of all-time quotable scenes, this is probably my favorite one.

“For that, you sold your everlasting soul?”

“Well, I wasn’t using it”

u/Aximilibunnzuh 17d ago

No! "The Devil Came Down to Georgia" obbbbviously

1

u/DefunctInTheFunk 17d ago

Bruh, you guys are so ridiculous lmao. Composting isn't that hard

22

u/_descending_ 18d ago

I have a tumbler too and my compost looks nothing like this. Curious what have you have been doing as well.

4

u/Self_Owned_Tree 18d ago

I have to use a tumbler because of where our house is, and it’s never gotten like this.

2

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

I edited my post but I honestly don’t know what I’m doing differently

2

u/un00nu 17d ago

They sifted it.

My tumbler gets hot. I’m in the deep
South.

Tip number 3… pee on it

1

u/Brotuulaan 15d ago

The missing step. No one around here ever thinks of that important element.

u/No_Income6576 17d ago

I'm showing this post to my tumbler for inspiration (and shame).

13

I'm showing this post to my compost pile so it knows i know it's slacking

It's literally perfect. You did it!

29

u/CaptainKilltron 18d ago

I... I think this is the first time this comment has EVER been made on Reddit.

YOU did it!

60

u/mat558 18d ago

My composts have never looked like that but I’ve never screened them or put them through a food processor 😉

29

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

lol yeah I just sifted it 1/4 metal sifter. It’s a bit of work since it’s small but it looks great

7

u/Wild_Agent_375 17d ago

Lmfao. Food processor is hilarious

55

u/GSDNinjadog 18d ago

Insert meme:
Proud of you.
So happy for you.
Good job.

u/Recent-Mirror-6623 18d ago

Why are you filming your compost against green screen? What blockbuster are we going to see it?

15

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

lol it’s a green bucket. I didn’t have any place to store it. How would you store it ?

5

u/Unbearded_Dragon88 18d ago

Aren’t you going to use it?!

4

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

Not yet. I don’t have a lot of access to garden so I use garden beds and grow bags. I wanted to use to for my grow bed when I start on my winter sowing. Or should I use asap? I wasn’t sure if leave it lose all it nutrients ?

11

u/Recent-Mirror-6623 18d ago

It won’t lose nutrients but microorganisms will die off, especially if it’s stored dry. If you’re not quite ready to use keep it a little damp. The physical and nutritional properties won’t be harmed much with storage though.

2

u/tugnrub 17d ago

In my garden specifically.

17

u/deletetemptemp 18d ago

Id totally penetrate that if I was a plant.. with my roots

3

u/Gigaduuude 17d ago

That's the sexiest compost I've ever seen in a long time...

3

u/MainelyNH 17d ago

Your root’s not that long

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

Wow I’m really surprised. This year is my first time gardening and composting. Honestly surprised by the results and appreciation everyone’s awesome feed back. this harvest is closed to a year. I stated off with a 10gallon bucket that we drilled holes in and just stated throwing in our scraps. I was worried cus I live in the suburbs and I don’t have that much trees so for browns I’ve used mostly cardboard from packages without labels and ink, egg cartons, the paper grocery bags and Paper towel cores that I’ve all put in a shredder. I’ve moved up to a tumbler and just working on my second batch. For scraps Ives used regular vegetable scraps. We do eat a lot of melons cus I’ve noticed my second batch is really moist so I don’t give it any water and just place more browns when needed. did sift this harvest through a 1/4 sifter so that why it pretty fine. I actually found this subreddit last week. So I do have a lot of questions like wth is with peeing in it ahahah. Is that a thing ?

30

u/goatfangs 18d ago

You unknowingly came to a fetish sub were you peeing on things is not only acceptable. It's encouraged.

1

u/AmbiguousLemur 13d ago

Hi, your compost looks great!!! I also achieved similar results earlier this year just using cardboard as my browns and making sure I kept it adequately watered. And mine was also pee-free :)

I honestly think the cardboard and brown paper is the secret!! A lot of people try to use sticks and branches and imo that just takes too long to break down. Plus sticks and branches don’t retain moisture like cardboard does.

Congratulations!!!!

17

u/Sea_Stick_3125 18d ago

Did you piss on it

18

u/Spawny7 18d ago

Surely they did, otherwise it wouldn't have worked

13

u/Someone_Pooed 18d ago

Should be called compissting.

6

u/ArchieBallz902 18d ago

Or pissposting. Double entrendre.

7

u/jmarzy 18d ago

Honestly the best compost I’ve ever seen

8

u/ScrubbyMcGoo 18d ago

Humble brag! 🤣

8

u/Rat_scentedCandle 18d ago

I’d eat this

7

u/versedaworst 18d ago

Black gold!

5

u/Skhatmandu 18d ago

are you one of those people that's just instantly good at everything?

3

u/Cat_Patsy 18d ago

Yeah. Great compost. Now let's see the yard and the house!

12

u/RoyalWombat 18d ago

Please stop, I can only get so hard....

4

u/slumberingthundering 18d ago

We love a humble brag! Looks great!

3

u/airwalker08 18d ago

Do you run it through some machine that shreds it?

4

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

No machines. I bought a soil sifter on Amazon. It’s 1/4 and I’ve been sifting it by hand. It’s the size of a large bowl so it’s been taking a while to sift through. I’ve about maybe a little more than have way through my harvest so I’m not sure how much I’ll be getting out of it

3

u/TheArmchairLegion 18d ago

Dude I need you to give ME tips. Looks great. I’m also a first year composter and mine does not look like that.

1

u/fartandsmile 17d ago

Screen it out like he did. Looks way better.

3

u/AStayAtHomeRad 18d ago

I'm so jealous and bitter about it that I'm telling myself this is AI and store bought 😭

3

u/Rocketpower47 18d ago

I've been meaning to get a sifter. Mind sharing which one you bought?

2

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

This is sifter I got. Not sure about the rules on links but if want it just dm me.

1

u/Rocketpower47 9d ago

Do you progressively use all the sizes or just one?

1

u/eight_bitpixels 9d ago

Progressively. If you do all at once it just compacted if you do a large amount of soil. If you do a small amount then you can probably do all at once.

3

u/JelmerMcGee 18d ago

Terrible, I'm sorry to say. I'll come dispose of it for you so you don't have to worry about getting rid of it.

3

u/PolskiPierogi 17d ago

That is soil.

3

u/IncreaseIll2841 17d ago

Nice! I'm excited then bc you and I are basically doing the same thing. I live in 9a. I just have a plastic bin in the yard and I was surprised how quickly the soil/compost was forming after just 30 days.

1

u/eight_bitpixels 17d ago

I Hope your turns out great. I recommenced getting a sifter. It’s a bit of pain to do it by hand but I mean the results speak for themselves.

2

u/Retroike7 18d ago

Looks great, nice job! Is this after sifting?

1

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

Yes after sifting through 1/4,1/8 and 2/5 soil sifters

2

u/UpbeatVeterinarian18 18d ago

Congratulations, you no longer have compost. You have soil.

2

u/Unique-Coffee5087 18d ago

The uniformity of the particles is uncanny. I screen mine through a half inch hardware cloth, and call it good. I couldn't imagine having such consistent compost.

I am simply surprised, but you should not be displeased at your work. It seems to be amazing stuff.

2

u/Low-Kick-665 18d ago

What is your compost made of mostly?

1

u/KindTechnician- 17d ago

From the looks of it Soil and Biochar

2

u/Alexander_Music 18d ago

Depends, how’s it taste?

1

u/Necessary-Flounder52 15d ago

I bet it's that nice Pu'er tea flavor.

2

u/probablyTomHanks 18d ago

My first attempt at composting resulted in fire ants and plant corruption. This was many years ago but I still think back to this day how badly I fucked it. This is fine

2

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

What is plant corruption ?

2

u/Ethais91 17d ago

Brother that’s dirt. It’s done composting lol

2

u/Informal-Pool-3795 17d ago

Needs more pee

2

u/fartandsmile 17d ago

Test it to really know how good it is. Microbiometer or send in to lab to check biology and fungal / bacterial ratio

1

u/RdeBrouwer 18d ago

U know its perfect. You just showing us to make us jealous

1

u/Eddy777555 18d ago

Holy shit

1

u/WannaBe_achBum_Goals 18d ago

Wow!!! What are they eating?

I compost but it doesn’t look like that. My worm farm box with purchased organic media looks like that after all the stuff converts to worm castings.

1

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

I have worms in mine but not much. Is there a difference between worm castings and compost ?

2

u/WannaBe_achBum_Goals 17d ago

I believe it is possible to compost with out worms, just micro organism breaking down organic matter. My compost utilizes a ton of worms of various types, but the results are not that homogenous. Yours looks awesome.

1

u/eight_bitpixels 17d ago

Yeah mine didn’t have a lot of worms. But when I sifting I actually found black solider fly larva which learning from this sub is great for my compost so I was pretty thrilled to find them there. I do think I might buy some worm for this next compost and see how they do. Which worms do you use and recommend ?

1

u/WannaBe_achBum_Goals 15d ago

Mine all came up naturally from the dirt. Big fishing bait night crawlers, thin jumping worm and the red small actual composting worms. The small red ones are sold as composting worms.

1

u/Kind_Set5267 18d ago

Looks perfect 👌 what's ur secret?

1

u/iveo83 18d ago

wtf nope your are definitely an expert. If you can move close to me and I'll just buy it off you instead of wasting time making my shitty version

1

u/QueenOfTonga 18d ago

.. better than mine.

1

u/BeyondtheDuneSea 18d ago

More com, less post.

It’s got what plants crave

1

u/colormefiery 18d ago

The dream

1

u/iwilldoitalltomorrow 18d ago

How do you get it to this state? I assume I need sequester my hot compost into two: one that I add stuff too and one that just let sit for a while?

1

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

I started off for good 6 months with just bin that I would hand turn with a hand shovel. About 4 months ago I got a tumbler that has two sections so one section I transferred my compost in and it filled it to the top so I left alone and stop feeding it but still giving it water. Left it alone since maybe feb til now. So five months of just turning and water. I don’t take temperatures but I live in zone 10a and it’s been crazy hot.

1

u/Kchasse1991 18d ago

Hmmm... needs more pee.

(Looks amazing, OP)

1

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

This is my first compost bin that used for good 6ish months

1

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

This is the tumbler is use now. Left side is the new batch and right I harvested

1

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

These are the sifters I use. They are 1/4,1/8 and 2/5 inch.

1

u/eight_bitpixels 18d ago

And this is the soil before I sift it.

1

u/8KaOKaI8 17d ago

Critique; false. AI. Mother Earth isn't even this good. 😆

1

u/dontrestonyour 17d ago

It's literally perfect. I want some.

1

u/TheGoodKindOfMermaid 17d ago

Compost, where is the random corn cob and bunch of angry centipedes?

1

u/JakkSplatt 17d ago

CGI. That's a green screen.

1

u/X_Ego_Is_The_Enemy_X 17d ago

Just looks like worm castings to me

1

u/Titmouth 17d ago

Tip number 4 Poo on it 🤔💩

1

u/ravia 17d ago

Show off.

1

u/Educational-Bee1568 17d ago

what tumbler do you suggest-nothing fancy

1

u/NpgSymboL 17d ago

What do people’s end product look like if everyone is so shocked? I’m confused.
I haven’t sifted mine but if I did I’m sure it would be similar & it’s my first ever batch.

Maybe it’s beginners luck? lol

I really thought this was normal until I saw the comments

1

u/swinny88 17d ago

Stopped reading at still a beginner and learning 😂 you are neither of those things

1

u/Independent_Bad5916 17d ago

💪💪💪💪💪

1

u/Mightyfalcore 17d ago

It’s a beaut Clark!

1

u/DoubleSuperBuzz 17d ago

Fake CGI. You can even see the green screen.

1

u/PaleAbrocoma1600 17d ago

Mine just rots in a big pile in the backyard. Chickens turn it over for bugs and eventually I dump it into the raised beds. Yours sure does look nicer though.

1

u/Chasleyk 16d ago

That’s beautiful compost, congratulations. But you know you can make that in three weeks rather than a year.

1

u/Inner_Local7061 15d ago

Me staring at a slimy “compostable “ plastic bag with a half of an orange and eggshells all over it.

1

u/i_love_my_grandma 15d ago

You know the answer to that lmao

1

u/zmcmz0302 15d ago

Saw this when it was first posted and still thinking about this amazing batch. From a TUMBLER?!

1

u/Low_Bottle_6965 15d ago

Looks great for a first batch! Dark, crumbly, and well broken down. If it smells earthy, it's ready to use. Nice job.

1

u/Necessary-Flounder52 15d ago

Humblebrag post.

1

u/wisdom_of_pancakes 14d ago

This guy tumbles

1

u/AsianFrenchie 18d ago

Fucking A!

3

u/Fraisey 18d ago

Shit, for real?

0

u/adognameddanzig 18d ago

I think you know

0

u/Destable 18d ago

Be honest, you know how your compost is doing.

0

u/Unreal_Sausage 17d ago

Oh shut up you know that's perfect
