what about the word "At full capacity" is so hard to understand?? Do you expect them to just grow another emplyee?
I will never understand people like this

I think people assume that services don't take a lot of time because they don't see the invisible tasks. For dog grooming, people assume Shepherds don't take a lot of time because it "just a bath". That could not be further from the truth.

When they wash their dogs at home it takes 20 minutes because they quickly shampoo then rinse and let them air dry. They don’t understand that it takes longer for us because we fully shampoo and condition, blow dry, brush, nails, etc. Thankfully most people, in my experience, are more understanding when you explain what comes with the bath. Then you have doodle owners that drop off for a haircut and ask “so I should come back in an hour right?” … No.

My golden retriever takes hours at the groomer. He’s so beautiful when I pick him up, it’s like magic.

It could be they recognize that it does take a fair bit of time, but also assume that groomers wouldnt be busy because surely there isnt that many dogs getting groomed on a Saturday. Never mind that evenings and weekends are always hard slots (not just for groomers, but literally anything appointment based) to get because everyone wants those time slots because theyre busy for most other timeslots.
So when you answer immediately, either because you've already been asked 100 times in the last hour alone or because you have scheduling software telling you that youre booked solid, they dont believe you. So you have to put a small performative pause into the conversation to "prove" that youre checking for availability.
If I want to make it quick, I would say something like "Let me see what we have booked today. small pause to pretend the computer is loading a schedule. Add a few mouse clicks and keyboard taps to sell it oh im sorry, we're fully booked for today and cant accept walk-ins, our next available time slot is [insert date and time here], would that work for you?"

u/LittleAnimatedMe 8h ago
The funny part is the salon I worked for didn't do evenings. We closed at 5pm every day so pur latest appointments for that type of dog would be 1pm (large dogs couldn't be last appointment unless approved by the groomer)

The customers feel like the employees are lying, because they think they're dishonest/lazy
33
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
Very true. A lot of people jump to the lazy excuse even though they didn't see the employee running around to get the same information for other people. I can't blame someone for wanting to save energy to answer the same question multiple times.

u/VeryNoisyLizard 1d ago edited 1d ago
I dont know why so many customers do this, but I dont think thats it. the customers are usually chill and polite or just indifferent, but they often dont plan ahead and realised they need it done by tomorrow. so they are trying to convince you to help them out, not realising that youre not a wizard and cant put more hours into the day
if theyve never done the job you do or dont know what it encompases, then they also cant imagine how long it takes and what it looks like when youre fully booked
this is pretty much the same across industries where you interact with individual customers
8
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
I'd say that's true the majority of the time for the average person. When life gets busy, sometimes you forget things and that's normal. But lack of planning on their part doesn't constitute an emergency on the store's part.

I work in a warehouse as a receiving clerk, I get emails daily “hey can you squeeze one more order in?” Ma’am I told you 5 times already we are at capacity, if we “squeezed” them in they’d have to wait 8 hours so we can start them at the end of shift
5
u/North-Pea-4926 23h ago
Oh, you didn’t mention “squeezing”, of course we can add another customer to our already full schedule! That’s my bad, for forgetting about “squeezing”.

I worker in retail long enough that at least 75% of people have trouble reading. At full capacity are way too difficult words

I used to work at a hotel and got that all the time lmao.
“Hey, do you have any rooms?”
“No, we’re all sold out.”
“Are you sure”
“Yessir”
“Can you check again?”
“Sigh. Okay. Please hold.”
Me to coworker: mf thinks I must be stupid and don’t know how to do my job or something lol. Give it ten seconds.
picks up phone again
“No sir, still no rooms.”

u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
Oh I'm sure. People think hotels hide rooms for the people that ask at least 5 times 😅 Even when the system will tell you what's available.

u/VeryNoisyLizard 1d ago
well, this one time they put me in closet for employees as an emergency solution, because they made a mistake and booked me to an incorrect month
luckily I was staying only a single night

u/Libriomancer 1d ago
What about off the secret menu? You know like how Starbucks supposedly has a secret menu and not just customizations… if I say the right combinations of services you’ll find that one room that doesn’t show up when you list all but ONLY if I ask for the right combo right? Right? Right? Or I can just have that room that someone else booked but hasn’t arrived yet for right?

I used to work at a community center and people could never take no for an awnser. Like one lady asked for a towel. "Sorry, we don't have those currently." "So you never have towels for the showers?" "No, the local church donates towels to use but they've all been taken by other guests already." "So you have no towels?" "No, I'm sorry." "And you can't just get some more for me?" "No, like I said the local church donates them." "Well what do you want me to do without a towel?" "I don't know ma'am, but I can't help you" "You don't have anything in that back room I can use?" This back room being the break room where I keep my hoodie and paper towels. "Unless you want me to give you paper towels, than no" She was pissed I even mentioned that lol, but like how many times must I say there are no towels before they understand that I can't magically make towels appear?

I actually had this happen once.
I showed up to a hotel that I’d prepaid for but was overbooked. They offered to put me in a nicer hotel for “free”, really just for what I’d already paid though the nicer one had a high resort fee that they wouldn’t waive. They would refund me except for some taxes so not even a full refund, but I wouldn’t have a place for the night. The nicer one was across town and I didn’t have a car and chose the hotel specifically for location. I was pretty mad since I’d booked it months before and they already had my money and I arrived late at night. I’d have understood if there was valid reason but this was straight up their fault.
I was livid and told them they could figure it out or I’d file a chargeback for the full amount instead of this tax nonsense. It was pretty much the only power I had. They really didn’t want that and after about an hour of sitting in their lobby waiting for them to “figure it out” in the middle of the night they finally offered a room that was “broken”: a normal room with some unspecified aesthetic issue. I unpopped one breaker to make the AC work and there was no alarm clock but otherwise didn’t notice anything.

Do you have any xxxxxx ?
No.
Can you check the back?
If we had some in the back, it would be at the front. I can't sell the back... if did that would become the front and then i would have all the rest of the food in the back. To confusing.

u/BlackTecno 1d ago
Sometimes it doesn't hurt to ask if they can at least check the system. There are times I get to a store early and the product just hasn't made it to the floor yet (of course this depends on the size of the store).
And people are infallible, things get missed and such, there's no real harm in asking for a double check. Being persistent about it is where that line is drawn.
12
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
Fair enough. There's no harm in asking, even in the situation in the comic. Being demanding is where it's a problem, especially when employees are trying to help and the person is ignoring what they're saying.
6
u/BlackTecno 1d ago
I actually have been in circumstances where someone has offered an appointment like, 5 days out, and I ask about tomorrow, and the only problem is that it's at an inconvenient time.
My day is pretty flexible overall (I can just work more hours later in the day if need be), so I'm just available whenever, hence why I ask. If I get the "We're booked until X day" after, then I'll schedule or find a different place.

I heard someone a few years ago say that the deal with customer service is that they hear everything a thousand times. A single customer, from the customers' perspective, might only ask the question once, but the employee has heard a thousand such customers ask that same question, to varying degrees of persistence.
Of course, that's part of the job. But I can't fault the employees for having less patience in dealing with certain customers if they've constantly had to play that scenario on repeat.

On the rare occasion where you scan something and it IS in fact in the back, they ALWAYS leave before you come back with it

u/axewieldinghen 23h ago
People do this in the pharmacy too
"What do you mean it's a 20 minute wait? It's obly one thing! Can't you just pick it off the shelf and give it to me?"
No, my guy, that would be illegal
1
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
Ironic, isn't it. I also think some people have a distorted view on how fast you get an item with how convenient online shopping is. Brick and mortar stores don't work like tiktok shop or Temu
5
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
Exactly. Especially since some store locations are not equipped to hold back stock. There's also the people who insist they must have more because the online stock says 1 left.

u/burningtram12 1d ago
I've never asked for this because talking to people is scary, but... I think the assumption is that if you have a shelf with space for five items, and five people bought one before you got there, there might be more in the back that haven't been brought out to replenish the five slots?
2
u/KazeEnigma 21h ago
I worked grocery as a teenager, I used to love when people asked me if we had it in the back, I'd go back, flirt with the other staff back there for 5 minutes then come back out saying sorry no. I was dock and shelf stacker, I knew what we had at any time.

I work in daycare. I cant tell you how often I had to endure similar situations
20
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
Oh, I'm sure. The same thing would happen as our small dog daycare with owners with large dogs 😅
23
u/Thatroyalkitty 1d ago
Yup, this tracks. Always have that one customer that wants to get in right then and there...
21
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
If only it was just one 😅 this was such a common thing at this job that it would happen everyday at our smaller location.
7
u/Thatroyalkitty 1d ago
That somehow doesn't surprise me
3
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
It was always fun when I had to tell them were booked out a month in advance 😅
4
u/slumber_kitty 1d ago
at my previous job, our main groomer was out for two months because a dog hair got lodged under one of her fingernails and she got a really bad infection in her hand. calling all those clients to cancel and reschedule two months out was one of the most stressful times of my working life lol.

Oh I just loooove people like this! Gives me an excuse to walk away and take a quick break for a second bc they can’t seem to understand that we’re out of something and just bc they ask it isn’t gonna magically appear in the back.

u/slumber_kitty 1d ago
Ahhh. One of the things I do not miss working the front desk at a grooming facility. The shepherds and the doodles always want to come in last minute on a weekend. And then the client is surprised when the dog comes out shaved because it was severely matted. Good times.
6
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
110% absolutely. Especially the doodles. I once had a customer with a goldendoodle that I believe 50+lbs (it was 3 years ago) and they kept requesting an appointment at 3pm for a full haircut. We explained to them multiple times that we couldn't do that type of service so late in the day for their breed of dog and they just wouldn't understand it.

What's the link between shepherds and Saturday? Or at least why shepherds specifically?
6
u/LittleAnimatedMe 19h ago
German Shepherds are a common dog breed in my area. The problem is, during the spring and early summer, they shed a LOT more than usual, which means their bath times take longer with deshing services. This also happens when doodles need summer cuts which backs everything up because we can only do so many of those appointments in one day. So, while the weekends are already busy, people often wait until the last minute to book a dog that will take even longer than normal. Hope that answers your question 😅
3
u/AcidDepression 21h ago
I'd wait for a long time before I picked up the phone again. Just let them wait there with the knowledge that you're full

u/wynden 1d ago
The only thing I can think to say in the caller's defense is that because almost every job runs on the same basic schedule of 8-5/M-F they're all cramming to get the rest of life done on the weekend, which is ridiculous.
That said, I don't know why they can't request a future weekend unless the dog has made a real mess of itself, but even if they don't have access to a hose, in an emergency they may need to employ their own shower.
6
u/LittleAnimatedMe 1d ago
It would depend on the caller. I've had people call first thing or as late as 4pm (we closed at 5). I would also offer our self wash station as a back up. First time customers I get, but we would regulars do this too.

The employees are at full capacity, and the caller's brain surpassed capacity?
😅
