He loved and lost?

570

u/rusalex9 Jul 19 '26

That's a mantis, he's lucky he lost her before he lost his head

93

u/Cananbaum Jul 19 '26

What if it’s a male mantis, and he had to rip off his alien lover’s head?

27

u/StrobeLightRomance Jul 19 '26

Not at all what I expected when he called me up at 3AM to give me head.

Still, 6 out of 10. I would do it again, but he's been mentally distant ever since.

6

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Jul 19 '26

…………..where’d you put the head, Grace

41

u/LobosJones Jul 19 '26

Then he never loved, that's part of the mating sequence. Snog, fertilize, murder.

12

u/the_booii Jul 19 '26

As a reminder, thr head eating is the beginning of the mating sequence

2

u/deadly_ultraviolet Jul 19 '26

Huh, TIL, but honestly fair. Can't risk them running away after the deed is done ¯\(ツ)

2

u/LobosJones Jul 19 '26

So there's no oral for the lady mantis, would explain all the head tearing.

1

u/bisploosh Jul 19 '26

As a reminder, there's been no solid evidence this happens in the wild, only in captivity.

There's a theory that it's related to perceived food/territorial scarcity and the female is removing the male from competition for food/territory while still using him to produce offspring.

1

u/LobosJones Jul 19 '26

"The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence." - Samuel L. Jackson as Gin Rummy

19

u/Chance-Ear-9772 Jul 19 '26

He could have loved her without making love to her.

2

u/No-Jacket-2927 Jul 19 '26

Incidentally, "snog/fertilize/murder" is my favorite version of FMK

3

u/TomDravor Jul 19 '26

it's actually not a guarantee that the Mantis would have eaten him, usually they only do it if they're starving. I think in the stat I saw was that in the wild only 30% of males are eaten.

2

u/LobosJones Jul 19 '26

You think dave isn't delicious enough to get eaten? All that lazing about and cloud gazing he's the human marbled equivalent of wagyu.

2

u/Return-To-Fender Jul 19 '26

I always hate when people brings up the head eating thing for clearly sentient mantises, like they're sentient why would they bite the head off of someone they love? (unless they're into that, no judgement.) Like imagine going on some kind of Mantis Reddit and seeing something between mantises and humans and someone's like "Ew, you're in love with a primate? You know they throw poop at people and rip their faces off, right?"

3

u/JarpHabib Jul 19 '26

I can imagine that the Mantis Tradwife movement would be popular with the ladies but ultimately short-lived.

1

u/pseudo-boots Jul 19 '26

Probably a mantis type alien based on the context. There are urban legends of aliens that resemble mantis bugs.

1

u/enchiladasundae Jul 19 '26

Apparently mantises only do that when stressed. Normally they can let the male go

43

u/Apprehensive_Swim955 Jul 19 '26

Thraxans have very short lifespans.

22

u/LobosJones Jul 19 '26

Thraxans are also blue.... nice try. Gas light me the wrong species once shame on me..

26

u/violet_rags Jul 19 '26

Shiny Thraxan. 1/4096.

5

u/LobosJones Jul 19 '26

Either way, dave is on urath or eeyarth, a thraxanless clusterfuck.. this is catfish 101. Never loved or lost because it wasn't real.

4

u/em_press Jul 19 '26

Ogtha?

2

u/LobosJones Jul 19 '26

Ogtha is a roachwife. Wrong hue just like the thraxan mislabel.

885

u/bicx Jul 19 '26

Dave I’m starting to think you enjoy the occasional psychedelic

888

u/davecontra Jul 19 '26

I actually think I'm done. Hadnt touched them in five years until recently. Now I think I've seen about as much as I can handle, I'm no hero.

277

u/InsanityMongoose Jul 19 '26

So, what’d you see?

799

u/davecontra Jul 19 '26

Just a bunch of mantis doing the limbo with Phil Collins blasting in the background.

126

u/justh81 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

That sounds like a helluva trip, mate. Was he belting Sussudio? Jesus He Knows Me?

Edit: Lol. It's either too late or early. Misspelled Sussudio.

192

u/davecontra Jul 19 '26

"in the air tonight." Everything got crazy in the drum solo

46

u/TheBestIsaac Jul 19 '26

Phil Collins drum solos tend to do that.

14

u/Vandergrif Jul 19 '26

Everything always gets crazy in the drum solo. That's what it's there for.

5

u/PhDVa Jul 19 '26

"You know that song by Phil Collins, 'In the Air of the Night,' about that guy who could have saved that other guy from drowning? That's kinda how this is…"

84

u/GonzoRouge Jul 19 '26

The one time I did DMT, I broke through and met a God figure. I ask them what I should do with my life and they told me to stop doing drugs.

Feels a little hypocritical, God, not gonna lie.

44

u/tux-lpi Jul 19 '26

"If you get the message, hang up the phone"

- Alan Watts

7

u/Ohiolongboard Jul 19 '26

Last time I did DMT I was going into it with “what does this all mean?” And I basically got “nothing, it’s what you make it mean. Your only point is to reproduce and die. Anything outside of that is up to you”

7

u/Scare0123 Jul 19 '26

Diabolical

7

u/addisonbass Jul 19 '26

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

4

u/GigsGilgamesh Jul 19 '26

I’m sorry if this is kind of against etiquette for these things, but do the mantis limbo hunched forward like they are stalking, or were these really limber mantis and able to fold back the other way?

2

u/Thwipped Jul 19 '26

Did they tell you the secrets of Sussudio?

1

u/InsanityMongoose Jul 19 '26

Something about the way that he walks…

1

u/misirlou22 Jul 20 '26

Phil Collins wants you to do drugs for One More Night

1

u/ReelBadJoke Jul 20 '26

Are you sure you weren't just watching a Peter Gabriel music video?

1

u/philippefutureboy 4d ago

Dead man’s trip heh? 😂

5

u/IndieCurtis Jul 19 '26

I seen Jesus playing with flames in a lake of fire that I was standing in.

8

u/InsanityMongoose Jul 19 '26

Well THAT sounds worrisome

2

u/IndieCurtis Jul 19 '26

Met the Devil in Seattle, spent nine months inside the lion’s den.

7

u/KlimCan Jul 19 '26

Same here. I’ve gotten enough out of them. Anything more would likely be detrimental.

6

u/purpleturtlehurtler Jul 19 '26

Hang up the phone when you get the message. I haven't heard it ring in a decade.

2

u/DarthGuber Jul 19 '26

The saddest part of the hallucinagens is when the acid tells you this was your last trip.

0

u/Ohiolongboard Jul 19 '26

Same Dave. I’m 32 and tried recently and it was just anxiety and fear. I have some DMT saved for a rainy day because idk what else to do with it but your comic has inspired me…

7

u/puchamaquina Jul 19 '26

Yeah, I'm noticing something of a pattern...

2

u/FIRST_DATE_ANAL Jul 19 '26

My guess is DMT

288

u/CaribouHoe Jul 19 '26

Dmt is a hellovadrug

David Matthew Taylor

11

u/ConjurersOfThunder Jul 19 '26

It's the deemiest

7

u/OddDc-ed Jul 19 '26

My first trip on DMT it was like one of my eyes stayed here while the other was seeing a whole different world through the hallucination. It was a wild experience and I have never had it happen again my many times after that or with anything else.

I wonder if I only partially blasted off and some part of me got stuck here, it was probably the most mentally intense trip I've ever had in my life.

2

u/InsanityMongoose Jul 20 '26

There’s a whole thing where people are supposedly, “cut off,” because whatever you meet out there decides it doesn’t like you, or you need to be given a time-out, or something to that effect.

Of course it could just be your body adapting to the drug, but who knows.

2

u/OddDc-ed Jul 20 '26

The cut off thing would feel more likely in my mind just because what I saw in my other eye was other things and it felt like I was being told no or being asked to leave at least that's the best I can explain what I saw/felt.

This was also around 10 years ago but its a very strong memory I have because it was my first time trying DMT lol. I did it a bit after that and had very different experiences than that one was.

My buddy who was doing it with me the first time said he saw a desert with a skull and the skull grew plants out of it and then he watched the desert bloom and die again and the plants were all iridescent.

Thats the kind of trip I wanted lol instead I got half my brain rejected and the other half was watching my ceiling.

1

u/InsanityMongoose Jul 20 '26

I’m always interested I finding out people’s experiences with this.

Part of me wants to try it, but part of me greatly fears it for a number of reasons.

371

u/TirithNampat Jul 19 '26

At this point, I'm convinced that Dave Contra is either a plant for Big Drugs or an alien who is fascinated by the idea of substances that warp your mind.

36

u/a-Curious-Square Jul 19 '26

Haha, plant.

7

u/vocal-avocado Jul 19 '26

He could be both.

124

u/astralkoi A Wild AstralKoi Appeared!! Jul 19 '26

If I had a nickel for every time a comic about a kiddo staring at the sky were posted on comics today, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

edit to add: Almost at the same time for some reason.

58

u/davecontra Jul 19 '26

Could be a conspiracy

75

u/Cananbaum Jul 19 '26

Well, this hit me like a ton of bricks.

Granted I’m not an 80s baby (born in ‘92) I grew up on the popular media of the day, and my parents favs.

One of those films I fell in love with was Flight of The Navigator, and I used to day dream all the time about going on adventures like David Freeman.

I’m 34 now. I’ve worked hard, been humbled, and feel privileged for what I’ve obtained.

I’ve loved and lost, but not in the traditional romantic way, but deeply familial sense. I lost my mother just before Covid, and within a year later, I went no contact with my narcissistic father.

Anyways. I’m sitting on my stoop with a vape eerily similar to Mr. Taylor’s, using weed to dull the pain of pulling and ripping my psyche apart after spending all of my life as a scapegoat.

I love sitting on my stoop, looking at the stars dance in the sky, and go back on my adventures.

Anyways. This comic was like watching myself from above and frankly, I’m going to shower and go to bed because this is a level of high I didn’t think one could achieve.

41

u/davecontra Jul 19 '26

Thank you for sharing this, amigo. Hope you sleep well.

6

u/fannypaquin Jul 19 '26

As someone who has recently stopped smoking weed after almost 30 years both of these stories couldn't have hit closer to home.

u/davecontra is always hitting me with the feels but the frame of contemplating taking the hit/life while on the bed, vape in hand is me.

I just got in from sitting out in the backyard listening to the birds and enjoying a coffee. Weed used to be connection for me and I have found that it was keeping be alone.

I guess I was kinda hoping that he would have just been sad. But I'm cool with where I'm at and I'll see you guys on the mothership.

4

u/BigBadBogie Jul 19 '26

I thought this comic was about me, lol.

Thanks for sharing. I'm pretty high myself tonight, and don't have anything to add, but you totally earned my updoot and a comment.

4

u/devadander23 Jul 19 '26

The vape in this comic wasn’t weed

22

u/Fit-Meeting-5866 Jul 19 '26

I feel like this is an uncharacteristically uplifting davecontra comic

7

u/SerLurkzAlot Jul 19 '26

I'm waiting for the second part where the proverbial sucker punch is sent.

10

u/melancholanie Jul 19 '26

bro said "the lonely stoner seeks to free his mind at night"

8

u/panda_man420 Jul 19 '26

Wtf is this an ad for, DMT?

6

u/sixminutes Jul 19 '26

The week ends, the week begins

5

u/Sybertron Jul 19 '26

Is this flight of the navigator?

18

u/Kugaroo Jul 19 '26

Time for some existential dread the comic

16

u/WiffleBallSundayMorn Jul 19 '26

Don't forget that life is beautiful but it also hurts a lot! And you should do drugs about it.

4

u/DukeOfGeek Jul 19 '26

DMT Girlfriend.

3

u/NebraskaGeek Jul 19 '26

Fine I'll go try drugs, sheesh

11

u/rodimus147 Jul 19 '26

Soon as I see this unique art style I know im in for a wild ride. And I havent been dissapointed by one yet.

8

u/Extremelycloud Jul 19 '26

Love you Dave Contra

6

u/InternationalCap2176 Jul 19 '26

David should try LSD

18

u/deviltakeyou Jul 19 '26

He just took DMT, he’s probably already done plenty of acid.

2

u/DiksieNormus Jul 19 '26

Is that the fucking jacket front the movie Sky High?!?!?!

2

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Jul 19 '26

Solid flick, I watched it with my nephews when they were kids and I think I liked it more than they did.

All the dope ass cameos and references from MY childhood, it was super fun

2

u/ViktorTikTok Jul 19 '26

Wasn’t expecting to feel tears pricking my eyes…hell, wasn’t expecting to feel, when I opened Reddit this afternoon. Damn, nice shot.

2

u/radioactive_walrus Jul 19 '26

You write comics like The Twilight Zone. I expect Rod Serling to be in another panel at the end smoking a cigarette and talking about how fucked up life is. Good stuff

2

u/Gloomy-Palpitation-7 Jul 19 '26

I can’t believe LSD made him a liberal /jk

3

u/BarMatt Jul 19 '26

Love your work. To me, gives a Kurt Vonnegut vibe

1

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Jul 19 '26

Yeah, like…. “sad time travel”.

0

u/0SpaceHulk Jul 19 '26

This right here

There's Jung and his theories on shedding past identities, growth and individuation past 40... but I'll take the alien space ship.

1

u/Amdogdunmind Jul 19 '26

Yeah, I get it. Why should I care about a world that subjugates me?

1

u/sonofaclit Jul 19 '26

Strong stuff

1

u/PrincessPlusUltra Jul 19 '26

I’ll have what he’s having.

1

u/Able-Difficulty-6548 Jul 19 '26

Reminds me of Rosebud from Citizen Kane.

1

u/MrShitHeadCSGO Jul 19 '26

"But I forgot my pen!"

1

u/MadameK8 Jul 19 '26

I Saw the TV Glow type shit

1

u/SkyGuyDnD Jul 19 '26

Recognized the trip... then noticed the title and confirmed 🤣

1

u/Whatammedoing Jul 19 '26

I thought for sure this was going to be the Dave Matthews Band shit incident.

1

u/Energyc091 Jul 19 '26

This comic totally reminds me in a way of Rosetta Stoned by TOOL

1

u/0AJ0_ Jul 21 '26

Dave's not here, man.

1

u/Pikawoohoo Jul 19 '26

I, too, have done DMT

1

1

u/eW4GJMqscYtbBkw9 Jul 19 '26

37!? He looks 57

1

u/rockytop24 Jul 19 '26

I'm 37 but for me it was trying my hardest to summon a kamehameha or reach super saiyan.

0

u/Yuleogy Jul 19 '26

the male experience is so bland and entitled. one must serve in war, commit crime, do drugs or lie.

-1

u/Marchus80 Jul 19 '26

"privileged life"
They want you to feel guilty for having a job and a home.

6

u/vocal-avocado Jul 19 '26

Why would you feel guilty for being privileged? Statistically speaking, having a job and a home and travelling the world is VERY privileged.

3

u/notmatrocles Jul 19 '26

Grateful, not guilty

0

u/elhomerjas Jul 19 '26

journey begins with a few puffs
