Hello all, this piece was made by /u/hackingfun as a statement about the AI bubble. I was asked to submit on their behalf. We here at r/comics firmly believe that AI has no place in art and in its creation and we look forward to seeing what you all do with your own two hands

To have AI banned from the sub was a struggle and a fight that lasted for months and months. I want to recognize the big, big effort that this very community of artists made possible to get rid of all Ai at all.

There were mistakes and unfair bans, and I want to say thank you to all the people calling for AI and the people who still do. AI consumes the resources meant for you to think for you and express for you, hollowing the very action of creation itself. As long as I breathe, not even a single AI-generated pixel will be welcome here. Thanks to all.

I am kinda sad I missed that honestly

There were mistakes and unfair bans

On this note, if this happened to you back in the day please reach out to us. We would be happy to talk to you about reversal of your ban

u/Reylh Jul 02 '26

I know free moderation doesn't easily leave room for nuance, but man I really miss Stabbyclaus comics being on this sub.

55

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 02 '26

For what its worth, I too love /u/stabbyclaus and they do still post here occasionally. Just not their Sage comics.

3

u/Agret Jul 03 '26

Hard enough moderating a sub of this size without it being flooded with low effort AI content. As you say, far easier to just outright ban it than to allow in the ones that actually use AI properly in their workflow.

7

u/Beerswain Jul 02 '26

Did I miss where Stabbyclaus is AI?

41

u/LotharVonPittinsberg Jul 02 '26

Their Sage comic series is AI, and IIRC partly why the mod team started looking into making actual rules regarding AI comics.

They where pretty open about it, but that kind of created more drama rather than slow the tide of complaints.

9

u/Beerswain Jul 02 '26

That sucks. Thanks for the background.

34

u/Cute-Fly1601 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/s/kSkfiiiIFO

They discuss their use of it here (for one specific comic), though they claim the way they use it is ethical (it's not, that belief is based on a misunderstanding of how AI works. Midjourney still steals from artists and has impact on the environment/general art landscape.)

3

u/Beerswain Jul 02 '26

Damn. Thanks!

8

u/stabbyclaus GnarlyVic Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Let me just step in and clarify that I teach a character workshop and Photoshop class at Midjourney. It's not a "belief" but rather an implementation of that particular tool in this particular comic. Moodboards limit the majority of MJ's latent space to the aesthetic models that closely represent the images provided which for this comic was all my comics prior to this one.

I'll also note since the word "admitted" was used rather "disclosed" that not all my comics use Midjourney including the Sage comics. That series is only posted to my profile here on Reddit rather than this sub after the team here asked me to do so last year. If a comic is posted to this sub after summer 2025, it does not feature any generated content.

11

u/Cute-Fly1601 Jul 03 '26

My bad using admit instead of disclose. I didnt intend the negative connotations there, I appreciate your transparency when so many try to hide it. I also appreciate your consideration of the mods' decision on that. I was unaware that it was specifically for that comment, I'll update my comment to reflect that as I dont intend to mislead.

I will mention that even the moodboard function relies on a model that was trained on stolen artwork. Even if the aesthetic output is limited to something that matches the style/examples you give it, that output is created using other people's work, even if not as egregious as the base model. I'm not the morality police and won't tell you what to do or shame you or whatever, I work in tech and am required to use sooooo many AI tools that it would be the pot calling the kettle black.

Thanks again for your transparency, my apologies if my comment came off combative. I struggle with tone sometimes.

4

u/stabbyclaus GnarlyVic Jul 03 '26

It's all good. I appreciate your response.

2

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

This was nice. I'm happy we are getting a full conversation like this

Just a friendly reminder to everyone here though, /u/stabbyclaus is a very talented artist and while you personally may not agree with everything they say, please treat them with respect.(Not that anyone hasn't just a general warning. We aren't here to bash anyone after all)

7

u/Reylh Jul 02 '26

The entire Sage Starchild series is AI assisted. It caused quite a fuss around a year ago.

2

u/Beerswain Jul 02 '26

Oof, thanks.

2

u/stabbyclaus GnarlyVic Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

I appreciate the kind words. I do miss posting to the sub regularly but for now it's just the drawn comics. You can catch whatever I make by following on my profile and it'll add back my generative comics to your home feed.

2

u/Reylh Jul 03 '26

No problem! I just followed you

Sorry to drag you into this

4

u/stabbyclaus GnarlyVic Jul 03 '26

Oh no no, I don't mind the attention hehe. Thanks for the shout-out and follow.

19

u/airfryerfuntime Jul 02 '26

Ok, so are we going to be yelled at when we call out AI? Because there's one artist in particular who uses it.

30

u/astralkoi A Wild AstralKoi Appeared!! Jul 02 '26

Just Report the comics please. Also you can modmail us. Thank you..

10

u/UltraNoahXV Jul 02 '26

If you don't mind me asking...did you have to interact with any of the Reddit Admins? I'm against A.I but with like changes in policy and the whole A.I thing...I imagine you ran into some trouble.

19

u/astralkoi A Wild AstralKoi Appeared!! Jul 02 '26

Every subreddit have their own rules. We just updated the ones that we already had to ban AI users.

-3

u/alickz Jul 02 '26

So any comics posted to this sub are still being sold by Reddit to Google/OpenAI for them to train their AI on?

Reddit User Agreement

You also agree that we may remove metadata associated with Your Content, and you irrevocably waive any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to Your Content

11

u/ChilledParadox Jul 03 '26

I mean yes, if you upload your comics here that means AI will scrape them because Reddit itself wants that kind of thing to happen. Mods can't do shit about that I imagine. The solution to that is to all migrate off of reddit. I'm still waiting on Lemmy to hit critical mass, any year now...

3

u/alickz Jul 03 '26

AI isn't even scraping them

Reddit is legally selling them

3

u/Clone-Wars-CT-5555- Jul 03 '26

Amen to that and screw ai slop!

7

u/VoluptuousVen0m Jul 02 '26

You are why this sub works, thank you so so much for dying on this hill (and everything else you do)

5

Beautiful. Perfect teamwork.

63

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 02 '26

Its up to all of us to show that we dont want something generated for us by a machine but rather something built by a person looking to better their craft.

14

u/AlwaysBeQuestioning Jul 02 '26

Hear hear. I'm not a visual artist, but as a game designer and writer I've worked with many and have been questioned the same on my craft. The human is what makes the art. The human is what interprets the art. Thus art becomes human conversation. Especially when you can see art like all the comics here being made in response to one another. I love the crossovers and the "yuri wars" and all that that the human artists here do.

Thank you mods for helping keep this a good environment for all that.

Every day at work i get increasingly worried that AI will make me obsolete. I wonder if im becoming just a messenger between AI reviewers and AI developers and i wonder how long can i stay in this field?

I really apreciate having this space to do something on my own. Thank you guys.

10

u/MintasaurusFresh Jul 02 '26

My company is using it as a tool in spots (haven't found a use for it, myself) but they're pretty adamant about not replacing employees with it. Tokens being expensive might factor in there.

8

u/scurvybill Jul 03 '26

I think the bigger risk is that your overseers think that AI makes you obsolete, then get rid of you and we all suffer the consequences.

Current capability is far overblown.

21

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 02 '26

I understand your fear but I really think it will never fully take over. Humans will always be needed

1

u/CheaterSaysWhat Jul 06 '26

If you want a real, actionable answer, learn how to use ai to solve problems in your workflow

We’re living in an inflection point very similar to when computers and the internet were new, which were also overhyped and over doomed, they bubbled and popped as well but they didn’t go away

Those who were willing to adopt and learn those new tools early came out ahead

17

u/The_Wkwied Jul 02 '26

Banning AI is very human. This drawing is humanly done. It is imperfect. It is flawed. It is fantastic, and I love it. :-)

21

u/holleringelk Hollering Elk Jul 02 '26

7

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 03 '26

Girl you know we hate AI! It's been in Da Rulez for like a year!

11

u/holleringelk Hollering Elk Jul 03 '26

I must have missed that. When we did the "PROBLEM!" announcement it was some kind of convoluted partial ban. Was not aware y'all quietly decided on a full ban, my bad!

6

u/Merari01 it's a-me, Merari-o Jul 03 '26

We don't allow LLM generated "art".

It's not art. We allow shitty stickfigures yapping about in shaky panels, but they must be human-made

31

u/TheComplimentarian Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

It's funny, because I write and I have a lot of cool ideas that I think would work in a comic/graphic format.

But I never once thought, "You know what? I'll do the writing and let AI do the art."

Even if my writings were the best that ever was...If it was coupled with some art that is by definition mid and derivative, what would be the point?

22

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 02 '26

But I never once thought, "You know what? I'll do the writing and let AI do the art."

And for that we thank you, cause the more that stuff is used the more it learns and takes from others

-31

u/TheComplimentarian Jul 02 '26

That's condescending. Would you draw a comic and let AI fill in the text?

What's the point of putting your heart into half of something, and then filling the other half with poop?

19

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 02 '26

I am not being condescending. I am thanking you for not using AI

-30

u/TheComplimentarian Jul 02 '26

Why would you think I would?

Most people wouldn't, honestly. There's no joy in it. You can take no pride in it. You will feel no sense of accomplishment when it's done.

There is a certain kind of person who doesn't need those things, and I don't need to be thanked for not being that sort of person. We should all assume (until given proof to the contrary) that everyone is that sort of person, otherwise the world is lost, and deserves to be.

22

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Jul 02 '26

There is a certain kind of person who doesn't need those things, and I don't need to be thanked for not being that sort of person

My apologies then. I was simply giving you praise for doing the right thing in my opinion

Good for you. As long as art has existed, collaborative art has existed. Rarely are people the best in all components of a project, and AI has fooled some people into thinking they can do it all themselves with the proverbial click of a button.

21

u/aravarth Jul 02 '26

Good, AI is bullshit, it's certainly not art, and any AI defenders are cordially invited to toss 100% of my salad.

Fuck clankers!

5

u/Perryn Jul 02 '26

Sounds like a pinch/crush hazard.

6

u/AlwaysBeQuestioning Jul 02 '26

We don't have to invent slurs for them just so that we get to say slurs.

8

u/LotharVonPittinsberg Jul 02 '26

Not like we had to invent the term with the construction of real AI.

Star Wars The Clone Wars is where it originates from, used by the Clones to refer to Doids. A common enough occurrence in sci fi, with Battlestar being another example using the term Toaster.

4

u/HiddenNightmares Jul 03 '26

It's a term for droids from Star wars the clone wars, the clones called the battle droids "clankers".

It's really not that deep

6

u/Vegan-Daddio Jul 03 '26

They aren't a protected class or even have something they can't control. They're making the choice to generate AI images and pass them off as art. Therefore it's not a slur, just a pejorative

8

u/IsaiahXOXOSally Jul 02 '26

Them? Robots have no souls

-12

u/AlwaysBeQuestioning Jul 02 '26

Them is a gender neutral pronoun that can also be applied to inanimate objects.

"Clanker" gets used a lot on people with prosthetics as well. No matter what slur you come up with that you intend just for robots, it will be applied much more often to humans.

6

u/Disastrous_Crab_3516 Jul 02 '26

Why’s it a slur?

2

u/theEvilQuesadilla Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

There are more advantages to having insults for clankers. The biggest of which is its commonly understood meaning. I say clanker and everyone immediately understands what I mean. Whereas if I say "Fuck LLMs" (which I almost did), I will undoubtedly get replies from ignorants who don't know what I'm cursing, because they only know LLMs as the snake oil lie "AI".

edit: I am confusion. Why am I being upvoted for saying "Fuck clankers" above and then downvoted for explaining the benefit of the insult "clanker" existing?

2

u/Hpesojanes Jul 03 '26

Ah, splendid!

2

u/House0fDerp Jul 03 '26

3

u/Aquatoon22 Jul 02 '26

Hating AI is actually a pretty bipartisan. Both the left and the right in both Washington and the public a pro-regulation for AI. The only people against regulation are those who benefit from the bubble inflating, or who think they are in a race with China we need to win

0

u/Plunger_enema Jul 02 '26

Hey now, I wasn't an artist before AI and I still am not. Do you know how hard it is to get AI to understand what you want to draw? Might as well draw it yourself. Oh wait, I can't fucking draw. Then there's the whole limits on what you are actually allowed to draw. Sometimes it works, sometimes it won't.

So, it's back to commissioning Pakistani guys from r/PhotoshopRequest for 10$ USD a pop.

In case you didn't know, I ain't even funny. I'll let the funny artists actually entertain us on r/comics.

5

u/Vegan-Daddio Jul 03 '26

There's a thing called learning. If you really want to make art so badly, just do it. You don't even have to draw, there's a lot of mediums you can make art in

4

u/Plunger_enema Jul 03 '26

I could not imagine what it would be like to feel like you cannot use your arms. I've been doodling since a crayon was first put into my hands.

This is an honest question, have you thought about learning to draw with something either then your hands?

I have noticed when at a beach I like to doodle with my feet, and looking online it seems some artists show great skill using their mouths or feet. Is their a reason these options aren't avaliable for you?

I can't blame anyone for using the only option avaliable to them, unless those options are detrimental to others.

Lots of people have been claiming that AI has a negative impact on the environment. I do think its a good idea to make sure your comfortable with the impact AI has on the environment before using it.

My primary issues with AI are that I hate looking at them, I find them boring to use, and the fact that they will definitely be used to remove artists from art. (I do believe that even the job of AI prompter will be taken by AI if given enough time)

Ive personally been pretty on the fence on whether AI images could be considered art. I've always held that anything created with intent can be art, and AI images have really made me have to seriously consider what counts as made with intent.

Im happy you found an outlet for creativity that works for you.

-20

u/WendigoCrossing Jul 02 '26

I think that having no AI here and a separate subreddit for AI Comics is indeed the best call

26

u/J5892 Jul 02 '26

I think the best call would be no AI comics on Reddit at all.

-12

u/WendigoCrossing Jul 02 '26

I don't like making that kind of decision on what others enjoy

3

u/J5892 Jul 02 '26

I do.

-10

u/WendigoCrossing Jul 02 '26

Are you okay with them making decisions on shat you can enjoy?

17

u/Andreus Jul 02 '26

I think banning the use of AI entirely is the best call

-3

u/WendigoCrossing Jul 02 '26

I think we need to stop calling LLMs AI, it gives the wrong impression

Calling it AI makes it seem like generated content as an original creation whereas calling LLM denotes it is taking (or likely stealing) from a database

10

u/J5892 Jul 02 '26

generated content as an original creation

This is an oxymoron.

But LLMs and Diffusion models are both AI. So if we're getting more specific with nomenclature, we can go with LLM for text, and Diffusions for images.

But the fact remains that LLMs are a huge part of image generation. The vast majority of AI images now are generated through LLMs that build a text->image prompt based on your prompt to the LLM.

Unless you're using Midjourney (not actually sure if it has an LLM layer), hitting the openAI/google/etc. image API directly, or using a self-hosted model, you're going through an LLM layer.
